De-Stress Your Life

BY CHRISTY BARONI • PHOTO BY ROB KAUFMAN

Our world is moving at a break-neck speed. With our 24 hour news cycle, social media, postpandemic work life, and ever changing landscape of professional demands, the stress our bodies endure is mindblowing. It’s no wonder people all over the world are blowing up at each other over seemingly small inconveniences.

Your body holds stress. Many disciplines from yoga to chiropractors to even your family doctor acknowledge that emotional stress leaves physical remnants. Oftentimes this manifests as tension in your lower back or your jaw. It can lead to headaches or an upset stomach. Longer term and unchecked, stress can lead to heart disease and chronic pain.

So during this time of unprecedented external stress, what tools do we have to mitigate the impact? It won’t surprise you at all that the obvious answer is the right one.

You are what you eat. A diet high in sugar and processed foods literally shortens your fuse. A recent study by Psychology Today showed that our exposure to fast foods makes us less patient and less willing to delay gratification in other areas of our life. Ask yourself several questions: when was the last time I was at the grocery store? When was the last time I cooked a meal? When was the last time I drank a full glass of water prior to deciding what snack to choose? Creating space for whole and nourishing foods has a direct impact on your ability to stay calm and manage stress.

Count to 10. The most powerful response to a stressor is so simple it seems absurd. Simply count backwards from 10 to 1, and pair a deep inhale and exhale with each number. Ten breaths in, ten breaths out. When you inhale, close your eyes and picture your chest cavity expanding outward (not upward), and work to fill your stomach and entire core with air as well. When you exhale, simply let the breath fall out of your mouth. This type of breathing will instantly slow your heart rate and will help you overcome a knee-jerk response. This practice gives you time to consider your fight-or-flight response and to make a choice versus simply reacting without thought. Move with a purpose. Get outside, get your heartrate up, and raise that body temperature a bit. Exercise can increase levels of endorphins, which are known to provide a sense of well-being and increased resistance to pain. Even a brisk 20 minute walk will give you the benefits of these increased feel-good hormones. As a trainer I often get asked what the ‘best’ form of exercise, and the answer is simple; it’s the one you can and will do consistently. Bottom line, there is something out there for everyone. Spinning, yoga, HIIT, kickboxing, weightlifting, barre, power lifting, there are classes and gyms locally that offer all of these options. Get out there and give them a try until you find the one that is a fit for your lifestyle and your preferences.

These simple habits can help you endure a stressful day, week, or season of your life. When you feel that stress if building up take the first deep breath and build from there.

SUMMER FUN

for everyone awaits on Hilton Head Island!

BY ALLYSON JONES

From 80s hair bands, family concerts and fireworks to Happy Hour cruises, camps for kids and interactive activities for all ages, there are countless ways to celebrate the hazy, lazy days of summer and create memories to last a lifetime.

Here is just a taste of the exciting events taking place this season, be sure to call ahead or check out social media to confirm dates and times.

Arts Center of Coastal Carolina

Do you know what love is? Or do you just wanna rock? Either way, hang out in West Hollywood with the blockbuster musical, “Rock of Ages.”

Set on the gritty Sunset Strip during the heyday of 80s hair bands, bright-eyed Sherrie, a small-town girl and aspiring actress, arrives in town, where she meets Drew, a busboy with dreams of rock and roll stardom. Drew convinces the bar to hire Sherrie, and the stage seems set for romance, but Jaxx has other plans. Who can save the Bourbon Room and the young lovers?

Find out when this Tony-nominated, high-energy hit featuring the music of iconic bands such as Styx, Twisted Sister, Journey and others takes center stage at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, June 29-August 14.

Later in the summer, Paul Reiser brings his hilarious show to Hilton Head Island for two performances on August 29. The multi-talented comedian, actor, television writer, author and musician who is well-known for his roles on “Mad About You,” “My Two Dads” and “Stranger Things” was voted one of the “Top 100 Comedians of All Time” by Comedy Central.

Labor Day Weekend, there is 100% chance of Purple Rain when The Purple Xperience takes the stage, September 3 and 4. Lead singer Marshall Charloff recorded with Prince on the album “94 East”, where he played both piano and bass guitar while Prince rocked out on vocals. You’ll be truly “delirious” over this 80s rock concert experience.

In addition to world-class shows and performances, the Arts Center also offers a variety of action-packed camps fostering creativity for kids ages 6 and up. “Art Around the World,” “Art with Amos: Sound Garden,” “Mixed-up Masterpieces” and “Lowcountry STEAM” are just a few of the offerings available this summer.

The Sandbox, An Interactive Children’s Museum

A place “where children learn to play & play to learn,” The Sandbox has welcomed more than 350,000 local families and out of town visitors since opening in 2005. Recently, this interactive children’s museum moved from its original location to a brand-new building at Lowcountry Celebration Park. A second satellite location was opened in Bluffton’s Tanger 2 Outlets in 2019.

At The Sandbox, little ones are encouraged to lead the way while they play freely with their families and caregivers in a child-friendly environment filled with interactive, hands-on exhibits and experiences.

In addition to sailing away on the shrimp boat, shopping in the grocery store, building in the block area or dressing up in the Sandcastle exhibit, bigger kids can get creative in the STEM exhibits or Maker Room, explore biomes in the 3D sandbox or fly the jet into space.

Various programs, such as Imagination Hour, are offered weekly with special events held on site throughout the year. Summer Camps kick off at both the Hilton Head and Bluffton locations on June 6. From nature and wildlife to engineering and space exploration, each weekly camp features a different theme. For details, daily tickets or camp reservations, visit thesandbox.org or call (843) 842-7645.

For well over 60 years, Coligny Plaza has served as Hilton Head’s Downtown with more than 60 specialty shops, delicious restaurants, an art house movie theatre and a Piggly Wiggly grocery store.

Built before a bridge connected the Island to the mainland, the center was once the only place for vacationers to pick up what they needed. Today, Coligny celebrates its past with an eye towards the future by showcasing local establishments and live entertainment, from up-and-coming performers to longtime fan favorites.

Seven nights a week during the summer months, Coligny Center Stage is home to family-friendly fun from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Join Jevon Daly for his kid-centric storytelling adventure on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday nights or stop by to listen to the sounds of John Cranford on Monday evening. Sing along to today’s hits with The Nice Guys on Tuesday, revel in the Lowcountry roots music of Nick Poulin on Thursday or join singer-songwriter Zach Stevens on Saturday.

Coligny Theatre, originally named The Island Theater, first opened its doors in 1972, and was Hilton Head Island’s only theater for many years. Closing in 1997, the owners of Coligny Plaza reopened it as an “art house” theater in 2002. Currently, the theatre is open daily and features showings of independent films, as well as hosting special community events and concerts.
