David MacVane Sr., after a career as Vice President of Certified Angus Beef, the world’s largest branded beef program, retired and became the majority owner of Fred the Butcher — with his two sons, David, Jr., and Dylan. The MacVanes partner is Alexander “Andy” Buonanno, son of the butcher shop’s founder. An Italian immigrant, Fred Buonanno died in 2011 at age 70.
The gigantic butcher and gourmet shop has one of the biggest artisan meat departments we have ever seen—featuring chops, filet, poultry, pork, roasts, seafood, dry-aged beef, and steaks. Fred the Butcher buys sides of Berkshire-bred pork raised by an Amish farmer near Johnstown — that the artisan butchers break down. And, they offer six (6) kinds of bacon and seven (7) types of their own brand of ham. The two locations combined offer more than 1,000 artisan products that bear the Fred the Butcher label. Both Fred the Butcher locations offer beef that is Primegrade American cuts, top-scale American Wagyu, and imported from Japan Wagyu… Shop there, today!
