You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things. They push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.” (This quote was actually a part of Apple's 'Think Differently' campaign, crafted by both Steve Jobs and the masterful creative team at TBWA/Chiat/Day.)

Personal Statement from the Author “The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” – Mark Twain
T
he above immortal words said by the most quoted of persons, Mark Twain, remain true to my life. I have discovered my passion and purpose in life; to inspire people to greatness. One day as I was going through some of the pictures in my phone, I saw one statement that has become my summary and signature, “I want to inspire people, I want someone to look at me and say, “Because of you, I didn’t give up.” I remember reading the statement over and over again, and ever since that day that has become my signature statement. 15

Why burden you with all this, it explains to you, why I am writing this book. I am writing this book because I believe in your greatness. I believe you can turn around your life. The date is 31st December 2017, as I am writing this book, and within a few hours from now the year will be 2018. I am writing this book to help you start your 2018, and also to have this as a handbook not just in 2018, but in your life. 2018 will not be there for long, but the principles that I share in this book will be. I am a lawyer by profession that is what I went to school to do for four years. At no point in time, did I ever realise that I could actually be able to write books that will be read globally. I just knew I had a passion to write books. Everything seemed to point to 16

the fact that I could not amount to anything of serious in life. I have a “U” in Mathematics at “O” Level. “U” simply means “ungraded”. I have a “C” in English at “O” Level, “C” in “A” Level English, 3rd Class in University Communication skills. I was not a confident person, and could not even speak before a big audience. If someone was to ask me then whether I was going to be able to do what I am doing now I was going to tell them no. There was a turning point in my life, the moment I realised that I have serious potential, and that I could pursue my dreams. I have written seven (7) books which are being used in all schools in Zimbabwe, and several more inspirational books. I have spoken to thousands of people in live 17

audiences, public and private radio stations. I have appeared on television countless times. I have contributed articles to dozens of newspapers. What changed my life was new thinking, and that gave birth to new possibilities hence the title for this book, “New Thinking, New Possibilities”. I had to change the way I thought about myself. I had to take the step of faith to open my mouth and speak to one person, take the step of faith, and start writing what I termed a “book” on rough pieces of paper, and then an exercise book, and even a step of faith more and type the script. The rest of the story is history. If I had maintained the thinking that I could not do it, I was going to miss an opportunity to live my dreams, and impact the lives of 18

other people. I want you to embrace new thinking in order for you to experience new possibilities. You cannot change your life, until you change the quality of your thoughts. This is my challenge to you as we are starting the year 2018, and even as you are going to engage yourself into any other project. Change your thoughts, change your life. It is my deepest hope that this book will speak to you, and challenge you to take action in the various areas of your life, business. You can change your life, you can make things happen, you can challenge your limitations, and make things happen, you are the one and not anyone else to do it. Gratitude
I
would like to acknowledge several people who have had a profound effect on my life. I might not be able to single out everyone in this book. I have written others in my previous works; Isaac Nyathi – for being patient with me and inspiring me in my early days of radio. I look back and see that I am a product of this man’s work in the studio when we were prerecording shows, and eventually when I started doing live shows.

SUCCESS IS A CHOICE Success is not for a chosen few, it is for a few who choose
I
have been speaking, mentoring and training people for a few years now. I do not come for a wealthy background, all that I have today I have worked for. I have always shared my story wherever I speak. The reason for this is to challenge you, and whoever might be in the situation I was in some years ago to rise and pursue your passion, and dream. I discovered a passion in me to inspire, and motivate people, but how was I going to do it, or even make 24

meaningful impact in my nation? One of the decisions that I made which I don’t regret today, is I committed myself to studying successful people, and the principles that they lived with. There is one fundamental discovery that I have come to understand and live with from my years of studying successful people, speaking and teaching on the subject, that what makes or breaks us are the CHOICES that we make in life. Success is a choice This is the one thing many people don’t want to hear. The truth is success is a choice, and so is failure. No one is broke by accident, you are broke by choice. Painful truth! No one is successful by accident, you are successful by choice. Decision making is very important. You are where you are in life 25
New Thinking, New Possibilities:
Arthur Marara
because of the quality of choices that you made. Choices can make you just as much as they can break you. Excellence is a choice, and so is mediocrity. Personal Development is a choice, and so is stagnation. Justifying mediocrity is a choice, and so is challenging and defying it. What choices have you made so far? Where have they taken you? If you want your life to change, change your choices. If you want to see where your life is going, look at the quality of choices you are making every day.

CHAPTER 1 YOU ARE WHAT YOU THINK “For as he thinks in his heart” – Proverbs 23:7
Y
ou cannot change your life until you change thoughts. You are your thoughts. There is nothing as powerful as a person with a changed mindset. Everything starts in the mind. Every big business starts in the mind. Every invention starts in the mind. Every financial breakthrough starts in the mind. Your mind is powerful, it can create and it can destroy. You can change your clothes, your name, your address, your mobile phone, but if you 27
New Thinking, New Possibilities:
Arthur Marara
do not change your thoughts, you will still be in the same place. What do you think? What are you thinking about yourself? You are what you think! My story Earlier on I told you my story of how I managed to challenge my limitations. The key is I decided to challenge my belief systems, I decided to change what I thought of myself. My surname, “Marara” means “litter, rubbish, garbage, excretions” and many unpleasant synonyms. Some of my teachers had the audacity to say I was my surname “uri marara emunhu”. I vividly recall the name of the lady who was teaching me who used to say that. I will not favour you with the name of the person. Today
28
New Thinking, New Possibilities:

wherever she is, she cannot open her mouth and repeat such utterances. What is my point? What affects you in life is not what people say about you, it’s what you say about yourself. What affects you in life is not what people think about you, it is what you think of yourself. You are what you think. In the case of my former teacher, her words could only have effect on me the moment I allowed them to be the truth of my life. I wish I knew this when I was that age. I have learnt to ignore my limitations, and focus on what I want. Words may have been spoken against you, remember you have the power to allow the words to have an effect on you.
29
New Thinking, New Possibilities:
Arthur Marara
What are you thinking? “Whether you think you can, or you think you can't--you're right.” These are the words of industrialist, Henry Ford, and I do agree with him. What do you think when you look at yourself in the mirror. Do you see a person waiting to die or do you see a person about to make history? Do you see an oxygen thief or God’s finest creation? The Banister Effect There was a belief for several decades that it was impossible to run a mile in four minutes. This was not to be so for long, as on May 6, 1954, Roger Bannister ran the first sub-four minute mile in 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds. Two months later, Roger Bannister again ran a sub-four minute mile, this time with John Landy running a sub30

four minute mile with him. A four-minute mile is now a standard for distance runners. The limitation was in people’s thinking. This is what we are faced with in life approved theories of what is doable and what is not. We end up being prisoners of our thoughts. The fact that something is difficult does not mean that it is impossible. You can do what is easy, and be like everyone, but you can attempt the impossible and do the unforgettable.

CHAPTER 2 THINK DIFFERENT
I
f you want to be significant, you have to be different. You cannot afford to think what everyone is thinking, and expect to be different. Common thinking gives you common results, uncommon thinking gives you uncommon results. This is the problem; many people want the familiar because there is security. There is no criticism in familiarity. There is no risk of serious loss in familiarity. If you want to change your life you need to be prepared to think and do things differently. 32

Apple Nugget “Here’s to the crazy ones — the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things. They push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones, who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.” These words date back to the 1997 in an advertisement which was created for Apple Computer Inc under the title “Think Different”. Apple was faced with serious competition from companies like IBM 33
New Thinking, New Possibilities:

which was termed, “Big Brother”. Even in the midst of serious challenges, Apple was able to stand up and stand out confidently with an intention to change the world. Steve Job’s dream was a computer in every home, and his dream has literally come true. Apple’s Think Different advertisement still carries fundamental truths and challenges all of us to think differently. We cannot doubt the fact that even after his death; Steve Jobs will always be part of the lives of people. Great people do not die, they live beyond the grave. The secret behind Job’s success, he was prepared to go against the grain, and experiment with his fantasies. A company which started in a home garage has grown to be a worldwide phenomenon which has changed the look of personal computing in 34

the world today. The secret was simple, new thinking, and thinking differently.

CHAPTER 3 THINK DISRUPTION
Y
ou cannot think like everyone else and expect to be different. Do not be bound by the common way of thinking. Step out of the common and do the uncommon. If you think in a common way you will reap a common harvest, if you think in an uncommon way you will reap an uncommon harvest. Great people look at the same situation like everyone else and see opportunities. Think disruptive innovation, and make history. 36
New Thinking, New Possibilities:
Arthur Marara
I will share with you some interesting thoughts that were uttered some decades ago. I do not know if the authors of these statements were still alive today, whether they would still associate themselves with their utterances; - “Everything that can be invented has been invented.” - Commissioner US Patent Office, 1899. - “The telephone has too many shortcomings to be a means of communication” – Executive from the World’s leading Telegraphic Company – 1876
37
New Thinking, New Possibilities:
Arthur Marara
- “I think there is a world market for maybe five computers” – IBM Chairman 1943 - “Guitar Music is on the way out” – Record Executive who rejected the Beatles 1962 The people who uttered these sentiments were thoroughly confident about what they were saying. Little however did they know that they were thoroughly wrong as well. The world is witness to how guilty their conclusions were. Do not be guided by generational thinking that is not progressive in nature, think outside the norm. Refuse to accept the status quo; challenge your thoughts to provoke solutions to problems. Remember, the quality of problems you 38
New Thinking, New Possibilities:
Arthur Marara
solve determines the quality of reward you receive. We have always been told to think outside of the box, but sometimes what we need to do is to think as if there is no box. Choose to be innovative I am going to sound hard, or you may want to say I am being rude, but this is the only way that I can see real transformation taking place in your life. Great people are great innovators. They are always looking for opportunities for change and improvement. They are always challenging themselves to be better, and by extension how they can make life better for others. How innovative are you as a person? What is the new thing that you have developed for your business or your workplace if you are an employee?
39
New Thinking, New Possibilities:
Arthur Marara
The future belongs to innovators Do you know that you do not need capital to think? The world recognises innovators. I often hear people say I can’t start a business because I do not have capital. You do not need capital to start a business; you need an idea to start a business. Facebook was started by someone who did not have capital. Whatsapp was started by someone who did not have capital. In fact Whatsapp was started by a person who had been declined employment by Facebook and Twitter. The people who have made it in business simply had innovative ideas they pursued confidently. Thomas Bata set out to put a shoe on every person on planet earth, and his idea gave birth to the family business, The Bata Shoe Company in Czechoslovakia. Boyd Dunlop irritated by the noise from the 40
New Thinking, New Possibilities:
Arthur Marara
steel wheels set out to come up with a solution that would change the world even today, pneumatic tyres. This became the birth of Dunlop Tyre Company which lived beyond him. Truth about innovation R. Buckminster Fuller summarises the truth about change and innovation, “You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.” This is so true, do not fight anyone! I have seen businesses fight other businesses; I have seen people fight other people! What a waste! True, it’s a waste of time, and a waste of life. Do not invest your energy in fighting competition. In fact competition is not actually your problem. The solution has 41
New Thinking, New Possibilities:
Arthur Marara
been prescribed above; “To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.” This is the truth that business needs to run with, and also as individuals, need to embrace. It’s very possible to be rendered obsolete. If you are not developing yourself you will be made obsolete. If I may rub it in, you can be absolutely obsolete if you do not develop yourself. I want to illustrate this point using the R. Buckminster Fuller quote, and a few examples. VCRs – growing up it used to be a sign of status to own a Video Cassette Recorder, not to mention a colour television. I remember my family owning one at a later stage in life. Little before we enjoyed the ‘new’ status, there was already a new model 42
New Thinking, New Possibilities:
Arthur Marara
rendering a VCR obsolete and you know what the model was, “Digital Video Decoder” (DVD) which would play Digital Versatile Discs. No one condemned the VCR; they simply developed a model which rendered a VCR obsolete. PEGEUOT “emergency” taxis – I was still a ‘baby’ when these were being used in Harare as taxis or public transport. You might have used these in the 1990s where people would be squashed inside, and be dropped at the various places. A few years later, “kombis” came, and sooner the Peugeots disappeared. Why? Someone developed a model which made them obsolete. The kombis themselves have been threatened significantly by the “Funcargo” and “honda fit” of the “mushikashika” fame. Though I do not use 43
New Thinking, New Possibilities:
Arthur Marara
this mode of transport now, but my brief study of these people inspired a reality of creating a model which renders an existing one obsolete. I grew up in Masvingo and ordinarily I would have some serious connections. I was told an interesting thing that kombis in Masvingo had actually been kicked out of business by the mushikashika guys who use Funcargos and Honda Fits. The true solution to mushikashika is not actually fighting them; but to develop a model which renders mushikashika obsolete. The mobile phone – there was a time having a landline on your home was a sign of success. I recall having to sweat to secure a landline for our home in Masvingo, but this was to be history with the coming in of the mobile phone. Now everyone can easily 44
New Thinking, New Possibilities:
Arthur Marara
communicate with ease, and with almost everyone. This became a serious challenge to Telone which for years had enjoyed the monopoly. Today Telone has come up with some very innovative products, and has pushed hard so that many homes are connected, and also have access to the internet. I really enjoyed the billboards which Telone was putting in Harare digging into or responding to a competitor. That simply serves a point, if you are not careful someone will develop a model which will render you obsolete. Econet has threatened several companies even in fields which have nothing to do with communication. It shook banks with the creation of ECOCASH. People can easily transact on their phones, transfer, receive 45
New Thinking, New Possibilities:
Arthur Marara
money, and make payments and recently tollgates. The tradition was one could only do these things when they go into a bank and fill in some forms. Telecel and Netone have similar solutions. The airtime vendor will soon be in trouble as people can easily get their airtime on their phones. ZOL transformed the field of internet, and connectivity, and has been so aggressive in connecting several homes. Internet is not a luxury it’s a necessity. When I moved to the place I am staying, I discovered that they had actually installed their cables even in areas where there were no houses. What was the strategy? They made their presence felt ahead of their competitors, and you have an idea what happens if someone wants an internet service provider in the area. Why don’t we master the importance of speed and 46
New Thinking, New Possibilities:
Arthur Marara
precision in service delivery? Kwese TV has given a serious challenge to DSTV which for years has enjoyed serious dominance in the world of pay-tv in Zimbabwe. This is what business needs, new and innovative solutions. Insurance firms have now been threatened by mobile telecommunications companies which are now venturing into insurance building on their existing customer base. I was watching a documentary about Elon Musk the CEO of Tesla, and SpaceX who wants to launch over 3000 satellites so that everyone in the world can access internet for free. Facebook even had such talk at some point in time. They want to ensure that internet is free to everyone. Their model if successful will greatly affect those people 47
New Thinking, New Possibilities:
Arthur Marara
who make money from providing internet only. Let’s wait and see. Business at times is about driving other people out of business. Look at this statement and you will see how true it is. How many companies closed with the coming in of iTunes? Several, CDs became obsolete in other parts of the world with people preferring digital downloads. This is the reason why we do not need worry about CD pirates in Zimbabwe; let’s develop models which render piracy obsolete. No one will ever buy from a CD pirate again. Do you want to be an effective entrepreneur? Develop effective models that render existing ones obsolete. People complain so much about DSTV and the costs. The solution is simple; develop a model that 48
New Thinking, New Possibilities:
Arthur Marara
renders it obsolete (that is if you can do that). Do not complain about a competitor who seems to have all the market, yet with an average product, develop a model which renders their model obsolete. Entrepreneurs are constantly looking for solutions. Stop complaining start developing models. What are you going to innovate?
49

CHAPTER 4 CHALLENGE TRADITION
G
reatness makes no room for people with respect to tradition. People who have made history are the people who were prepared to face the challenges and the criticism in order to do the unforgettable. There are people who will always hold non-progressive views and will always look for opportunities to crush innovation. People who are accustomed to the normal will never have a date with the abnormal. At one point in time it was 50
New Thinking, New Possibilities:
Arthur Marara
termed abnormal to transmit voices without wires, it was abnormal to fly and soar like eagles. There are people who even invested their resources just to demonstrate that that there is nothing that can be invented. There are several things that may have become normal in your business, and you may have embraced it as a reality. What you embrace becomes a part of you. What has been said about you? Do you believe it? The story of George Dantzig You may not know of this gentleman, but I will unpack his story for you. George had a well documented record of late coming for class every day during his college days. Consistent with his behaviour he walked into class and saw some two mathematical problems which were written on the 51
New Thinking, New Possibilities:
Arthur Marara
chalkboard. Without talking to anybody, he simply copied the problems and went back to his room where he started working on them. He finished the first mathematical problem, and moved on to the next one. He discovered that the second problem was not his usual mathematical problem and realised that he just need a bit more time to work on it. Within three days, he managed to finish the second problem, and he submitted his assignment. To compound the matters he was also late with his assignment. After submitting his assignment, he got a call from his Professor who seemed a bit shaken. George was apprehensive, as he thought he may have performed dismally in the assignments and the Professor was calling to caution him. The Professor told George, “DO you know what you just did? The 52
New Thinking, New Possibilities:
Arthur Marara
second question that you answered was not an assignment. This is an equation which has vexed mathematicians ever since the time of Albert Einstein. History was made, a problem which had been in existence for years, was solved in three days. Interesting! What was the secret behind George Dantzig’s success? Ignorance of the history of the problem was his secret. Everyone who was in class when the Professor was delivering the lecture about the famous mathematical problem never attempted to write it. In fact those who wrote it down simply did so because they wanted to share the story, and not find a solution. George who was not in class was not conditioned on the difficulties of the problem. He was never told about the history of the problem, and 53
New Thinking, New Possibilities:
Arthur Marara
when he attempted the problem, he treated it as a normal homework problem and with that mindset, he made history. You too can do so, choose to ignore the stories that are often told about the challenges that face the economy, and choose to focus on solutions.
54

CHAPTER 5 THINK QUALITY ASSOCIATIONS
W
ho is in your life, and what are they speaking? I can best guarantee you that if Dantzig was in class that day, he would not have made history. Fear was instilled in all the people who attended the lecture. Who is speaking in your life right now? What are they speaking into your life. There are people who are really good at inspiring fear in you. They can tell you every reason why you cannot achieve your dreams. Sometimes, you do not need to hear a thousand reasons 55
New Thinking, New Possibilities:
Arthur Marara
why you cannot do it; you just need one good reason why you can. Surround yourself with people who challenge your thinking, and stretch you to greater limits. People who do not stretch you shrink you. I once wrote in my Personal Development book, that, “It is better to have no friends at all than to have a thousand friends who do not add any value to you.” Evaluate your associations “Good company and good discourse are the sinews of virtue” [Izaak Walton]. It is better to have no friends at all than to have a thousand friends who do not add value to you. Our success in life is also dependent on the associations that we create and sustain in life. Associations can either build you or destroy you. Certain business started because 56

of associations, other businesses were liquidated because of associations. Other people destroyed their marriages because of the associations they created or became part of. The instances are many. Evaluation is a critical component of assessing where you are going with your life. Interrogate your choice of friends. You can do this by asking yourself some common sense questions. Fortunately, Jim Rohn put across the questions in an interesting way, “You must constantly ask yourself these questions: Who am I around? What are they doing to me? What have they got me reading? What have they got me saying? Where do they have me going? What do they have me thinking? And most important, what do they have me becoming? Then ask 57

yourself the big question: is that okay? Great people understand the importance and power of healthy associations. A number of parents are always particular about the people who are around their children. This is because they know that a child can have alien behaviour which they never had before merely because of association. This is still the same for adults, associations can affect you; positively or negatively. The story of four lepers A story is often told about four leprous men in Ancient Israel. Eugene Peterson puts it in an interesting way; “It happened that four lepers were sitting just outside the city gate. They said to one another, "What are we doing sitting here at death's door? If we 58

enter the famine-struck city we'll die; if we stay here we'll die. So let's take our chances in the camp of Aram and throw ourselves on their mercy. If they receive us we'll live, if they kill us we'll die. We've got nothing to lose."(MSG) (2 Kings 7:3-4). Leprosy then was considered a curse and those who were affected by it were treated as outcasts. Four people found themselves in this scenario, a friendship ensued, but it later birthed inspirational actions because of what they decided to do. In particular, they opened their minds. Have friends who desire better things Desist from associations that tolerate mediocrity. The greatest impediment to a better tomorrow is the satisfaction of today. People who are contended with the status 59

quo will never hunger for change in their life. The four lepers became sick and tired of the status quo and made a decision to challenge it, “"Why are we sitting here until we die?” (NKJV) (2 Kings 7:3). If you circle yourself with people who do not feel the need for development in their own lives, they will never inspire you to develop your own life. If you hang around four broke people, you will be number five. “We acquire the characteristics of the people we associate with on a steady basis.” [Zig Ziglar].The four lepers were able to realise the need to take action in order to change the course of their lives. They were not afraid to take action, and they were ready to take risks. Why not surround yourself with people who inspire you to take positive risks? 60
New Thinking, New Possibilities:

Surround yourself with people who add value to you “Surround yourself with people of like mind and different talents and temperaments with the purpose of serving the goals of every member of the group. Associate with these people on a regular basis (Jeff Olson). People, who do not add value to you, take away value from you. What are you learning from the people who are in your circles? How better is your knowledge about business, by interacting with the people you are interacting with? This question can be extended to any area of your life. You can never succeed in your marriage if you surround yourself with people who have no respect marriage, you can never love your spouse if you surround yourself with people who do not value their spouses. Have people 61
New Thinking, New Possibilities:

in your circle who value what you value and respect what you respect. Do not be tolerant and patient with any relationship that is not taking you anywhere. Take a bold step in your life and leave certain people. “The less you associate with some people, the more your life will improve. An important attribute in successful people is their impatience with negative thinking and negative acting people” (Unknown). Sometimes in life, subtraction is as healthy as multiplication. What value are you friends adding to you? Surround yourself with people who believe in you “Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, 62
New Thinking, New Possibilities:

too, can become great” (Mark Twain). A number of ideas died and continue to die at the hands of friends who chose not to believe their friends’ dreams. Life is too short to spend it with the “wrong” people. You do not need people who tolerate you, you need people who celebrate you. One of the constant source of discouragement in life is people who are close to us, and we sometimes call friends. Be careful who you allow to hear your dreams, it is not everyone who cares about it. Go to people who can help you think, and stretch your idea, and help you find ways of making it come true. Have people who give you constructive criticism “The only service a friend can really render is to keep up your courage by holding up to 63

you a mirror in which you can see a noble image of yourself. [George Bernard Shaw]. Great friends are not afraid to tell you the truth; they love you so much that they make your success their own. The challenge today is that we have friends who celebrate their friends to destruction. A number of people have been celebrated for their adulterous escapades rather than be corrected. There are some people who are even celebrated by their friends for their corrupt behaviour and none of them is prepared to correct them. You need friendships that value the truth rather than feelings. In the long run, it is the truth that will protect your feelings. Be prepared to listen to positive criticism and not just praises. Norman Vincent Pearle once noted that a lot of people prefer to be 64

ruined by praise rather than preserved by criticism. Let me close with a thought which you can ponder upon, “Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence; true friendship is a plant of slow growth, and must undergo and withstand the shocks of adversity before it is entitled to the appellation. [George Washington]

CHAPTER 6 START WITH THE RIGHT MENTAL ATTITUDE
I
t has often been said that your attitude determines your altitude. What is killing many people and working against our success is our attitude. Many people have registered failure in their system, and everything that they apply their mind to is bound to fail. Everything that they do has to conform to this standard. We can never grow beyond our level of faith. Those who 66

internalised the theories of the Professor in George Dantzig’s case may even have compared themselves to Albert Einstein and his achievements, and looked at themselves and they felt hopeless. One gentleman, who did not read about Einstein and other mathematician’s troubles, approached an age old problem as a normal problem. He had the right attitude which was devoid of inherited fears. Why don’t you give yourself a chance? Forget the failures of the past, and choose to create breakthroughs of the future. Choose to make the future generation believe in possibility rather than in limitations. So what? Who said you should be compared to anyone. If Einstein failed it so what? If my 67

father could not do it so what? If your boss could not do it, so what? Some people are not pursuing Masters Degrees simply because their superiors do not even think about pursuing their own studies. Challenge the standards which have been set by the people around you and create new solutions. Do not import other people’s failures into your life. You cannot be corrupt simply because everyone around you is doing it. Stand out, and make yourself visible to even greater and better opportunities. Next time someone tells you about people who have failed in the past, look them in the eye and ask them, “So what?” “The Lion Mode” I was going through a post which I thought made a lot of sense. The article illustrates 68

one creature which knows the power of attitude, the lion. I thought it prudent to share with you what I read. I could have recognised the author had it been signed, but it was not. In the jungle: 1. The Elephant is the biggest 2. The Giraffe is the tallest 3. The Fox is the wisest 4. The Cheetah is the fastest Yet, the Lion is the KING of the jungle even without ANY of these qualities. Why? 1. The Lion is courageous, is bold, walks with confidence, dares anything and is never afraid. 69
New Thinking, New Possibilities:
Arthur Marara
2. The Lion believes it is unstoppable. 3. The Lion is a risk taker. 4. The Lion believes any animal is food for him. 5. The Lion believes any opportunity is worth giving a try and never lets it slip from its hands. So... 1. You don't need to be the fastest. 2. You don't need to be the wisest. 3. You don't need to be the smartest. 4. You don't need to be the most brilliant. 5. All you need is courage 6. All you need is the will to try. 70
New Thinking, New Possibilities:
Arthur Marara
7. All you need is the faith to believe it is possible. 8. All you need is to believe in yourself, that you can do it.!! I believe there are a lot of lessons to learn from the lion, what we need to do is learning and mastering the winner’s attitude.

CHAPTER 7 THINK POSSIBILITY
Y
ou need to be a possibility thinker for you to make it in this life. It’s not going to be easy; it is going to be hard. You have to believe that it is doable. You have to be determined to achieve your goals in life. "The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a person's determination." [Tommy Lasorda]. The fact that you have awesome goals does not necessarily mean that the pathway to 72

achieving them is going to be awesome as well. Challenges will always be there, but it’s how you deal with them that will make the difference between your failure and success. The challenges that you go through in life enable you to have a better appreciation of the process and the value. If you do not have an understanding of the process, you will not have an appreciation of the value of the proceeds. A lot of people, who are reckless with money or property, do not have an appreciation of the process that led to the acquisition of the same. Challenges are actually good for you. You are not going to make it in life if you are ready to give up. With the necessary determination, you will always find your way through challenges and 73

turn them as stepping stones to your greatness. Have the dedication to accomplish you goals. Never give up until you are through. "The person who makes a success of living is the one who sees his goal steadily and aims for it unswervingly. That is dedication." [Cecil de Mille] George Weah’s Case Liberia recently had presidential elections, which have been commended globally for being peaceful. One interesting thing about the elections is one of the participants. I quote an article I found circulating on social media, “When George Weah contested and lost the Liberian Election in 2005, a major negative campaign against him from his opponents was that, he lacked proper education. He didn't even have a High 74

School Certificate though he could speak English, French and Italian. But he didn't relent, and it didn't break him down. Now he has taken care of that over the past eight years: Following the defeat, he challenged himself and worked extremely hard to obtain a high school diploma(SHS) in 2006, aged 40, and went on to DeVry University in Florida, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in business management in 2011 and on top, has a master’s degree in public administration. Today, the 1995 World Footballer of the Year is Now President elect of Liberia.” What is interesting about Weah’s case is his determination and willingness to develop him. In so doing he managed to improve himself, and also ensured that he earned the 75

respect of his people who have entrusted him with leadership of the nation. The story of Harland Sanders The name Colonel Harland Sanders might not be common to many people but his legacy is, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). Harland Sanders started KFC when he was sixty five (65) years of age, an age when most people would have abandoned any thought of new goals and projects. KFC did not just start from nowhere. It was birthed from a gas business that he operated in Kentucky. He then discovered that there was an opportunity for food among the travellers who were passing through his gas station. He started frying chicken using some of his recipes which had been rejected by several companies in the United States. Sooner 76

than later, his fried chicken became very famous such that there was an increase in the business. He had to extend his dining room so that he could accommodate more people. His CHALLENGE lay in the fact that it took about 30 minutes to prepare the chicken an amount of time travellers did not have. This prompted him to look around, and managed to get hold a company that was selling pressure cooks. In those days the pressure cookers were used for boiling vegetables and other items. Instead he filled the cookers with oil and used it for frying chicken. He thus managed to cut the cooking time from thirty minutes to merely eight minutes. The rest is history; Harland sold his KFC business for over US$2 million and he died a very rich person in 1980. What this teaches us is that we need to 77
