Directed by World Stage Design award winner CHOU TungYen, this new media work captures the everyday scenes of modern society: making coffee, taking selfies, or using mobile phones, and creates real-time images and music on stage. Through the eyes of our smart phones and tablets, the intimate yet distant relations between us was revealed. Since making its debut in Taipei, Taiwan, Teatime with Me, Myself and I has traveled to Denmark, France, South Korea and China, engaging local performers in developing dance and installation versions of the show. This production was brought to you by a collaboration of artists from different parts of the world, including Taiwanese performers LIANG Inred, HUNG Chien-Tsang, Korean choreographer KIM Ju-Bin, Japanese director and choreographer Nao YOSHIGAI. There will be also extra Taiwan performers and students of Taipei National University of the Arts. Please feel free to drop in this self-reflective conversation with our intimate friend.

The Theatre Architecture Competition (TAC) is an international ideas competition organized by the Architecture commission of OISTAT, aimed at students and emerging practitioners exploring the possibilities of theatre architecture. Themed as "Theatre as Public Space," TAC 2017 calls for designs of a temporary theatre (or theatres) in The Public Activity Center, a disused sports stadium in Hsinchu City, Taiwan. The design task is to create a "theatre village" for a festival of theatre and the aim of the competition is to challenge the conventional typology of the theatre. Competitors are encouraged to collaborate with theatre-makers to explore the complex issues arising in the design of theatre space - the geometry and atmosphere that best support the telling of stories in a live performance. The TAC 2017 Exhibition features the winning 25 entries selected by an international jury from 102 entries received from 23 countries. Ye-Tai , designed by Che-Hung Chien from Taiwan, is awarded as the first prize of TAC 2017. The selected entries will also be published in the TAC 2017 catalogue.

Dance/Music
Traditional dance styles in Ghana: 1. Kete: a court dance performed for the entertainment of the Ashantehene chief of Ashanti. Originally performed for only the royals and now at all social gatherings in modern Ghana. 2. Bamaya: a social dance of the Dagomba tribe in the northern part of Ghana. Originating as a result of drought. Performed by men only. It is performed in a circle with the drummers in the middle, but the group has created its own arrangement. 3. Jera: a ceremonial dance performed for heroes or on very important occasions. Jera comes from the northern part of Ghana. It is also performed by men who are spiritually strong and can display their power. 4. Sikyi: a recreational dance performed by the Akans in Ghana. It is flirtatious in character and its movement includes bobbling. In this dramatized version, the performers entertain you with innocent youthful love plays between lads and lasses.

"Seagulls"is Volcano's acclaimed Radical Classic production, based on Chekhov's The Seagull. This production brings the excitement of Volcano's site-responsive theatre back into the auditorium with a design installation by young performance designer Milla Clarke and lighting designer Ben Stimpson. The production has Chekhov's text interwoven with sections of fast moving improvisation and incorporates surprising technical elements. It is an impossibly sad, unreasonably funny and ludicrously inventive version of a Russian classic.

Performer 演出團隊 Volcano is an artist-led, outwardfocused organization that explores ideas and social relations through performance. Volcano embraces the immediacy, surprise, and risk at the heart of live performance, viewing its audiences as active participants. The company occupies a disused industrial citycentre building where it creates original work and hosts visiting arts. Volcano has the ability to move quickly and imaginatively to make things happen, and has a trackrecord in inspiring and engaging others, working in partnership and setting big ideas in motion. We have been creating and touring high-impact professional theatre productions all over the world for over 27 years.

Derived from the stories reported on a newspaper in the Japanese colonial time of Taiwan, this production poetically portrays four seasons of historical remains of Tainan. The story begins from Hu-lu Street, where two young Geishas have gone through their individual lifetime together. The devise of this production is to build up a space of Japanese colonial period (1895-1945) in theater and to represent the nostalgic scenery of Hu-lu Street. In order to display the historical atmosphere of culture, stage is designed as a winding lane and audience is arranged to sit on two sides of the lane just like viewing the life stories of neighbors. At both ends of the lane are doors with images of four seasons of Tainan being projected. Dancers walk through the doors and dance in the lane to portray the aesthetics of Taiwanese dance by choreographer ChunHsian Hsu.

The multidisciplinary performance is inspired from the short script "The Malady of Death" of Maguerite Duras. "It's a story about a man who hires a woman to stay with him so that he can learn about love." The intoxicating element, rather, is provided by the neutral, unidentified and half-asleep narrator's voice. Marguerite Duras's original text is selected by the memory of the actor by writing the French text on the mirror and projection to visualizing another side of the story to homosexuality world. Cracked acrylics sheets hang likes the clear wall, and the actor is writing on it, to divide the audience. The performance is just likes a collage of dreams about sex, love, guiltiness, and the obsession about the text from "The Malady of Death". The performance is crossing by 3 languages, French, Japanese and Thai, but it doesn't matter if the audience could understand text or not. It's about listening and feeling the journey to the dream.

This performance - walk refers to a street theatre, a parade. Spectators watch and accompany the Dragon on his journey. Our performance explores the integration of the Russian epic character from the world of fantasy in everyday life. We are studying the question: "is there a place for the miracle in the life?" In the performance, there are two main characters: the three-headed red dragon as a symbol of magic. A black man catching the dragon - a symbol of doom. The action takes place in the outdoor area. During the walk, the Dragon leaves the small flakes of the same color as part of his soul. Thousands of red pieces of paper fly when a fairy tale faces reality.

Inspired by the paintings of Francis Bacon. Devised by the awardwinning visual artist and theatre director Zi Ling and the Company, "Dry Room" is an intense and captivating physical exploration of childhood trauma and love's gruesome side. Through a dreamlike and fragmented narrative, "Dry Room" draws out dark emotions in Bacon's work in eleven scenes of intimate love, distorted desires, jealousy and violent passions. The show gives an intriguing cinematic perspective to a dance piece, by using lighting, live music, and conceptual art. The performance was originally premiered at a prestigious West End venue, Sadler's Wells Theatre, as "Normal Love", and was well-received by the audience and critics. It has been since renamed and further developed by a brand new cast. The new show features designs by Zi Ling and Fashion Designer/Scenographer Tong Zhao (London/Paris Fashion Weeks) and emerging Lighting Designer Ali Hunter.

Francesco Fassone, by creating scenic machineries with the employment of tools, derived from navigation and stagecraft and shared by both of them (ropes, pulleys, cloth), makes a research on the prospect of making a travel within the limits of a narrow space. "Shape" is an apparatus composed by a connection of pulleys and ropes, fixed to a big white cloth (50 m2), made of a sailing textile, with an adjustable strucure, like a sail foot, installed inside an architectural space. The mechanism, driven manually, by two stagehands, like a sail operated by sailors, can move within the ambient, crawling on the surfaces and transforming, creating an incessant process of permutation, evoking different spaces, abstract forms and sensations. The performance wants to suggest a parallelism between the use of a theatrical backdrop and a sail, to evoke a metaphorical navigation in an unconscious dimension.

"Flimmerskotom" is a performance based on the machines, objects and devices of the theatre space itself. It uses the lights of the theatre space as a force that takes over the stage and is the main performer. Normally we identify the human as the protagonist of the theatre, in "Flimmerskotom" there is nearly no human ever visible. Instead the lights and other projection machines become alive and haunt the space. For "Flimmerskotom" we recorded the sounds of the theatre lights (which are all analog lights). The lights are not only visible but also audible. A wide range of frequencies and rhythms cover the space. The theatre becomes an experience of its very own possibilites and technological dreams. For "Flimmerskotom", the stage design itself is no longer background, but it takes over the leading role.

"Echo Walk" is a ballad through space, time and intimicy, in which the public shares the stories told by the performers. A time when false memories are grafted to the real memories of a place at a specific time. Memories of strata, stories intertwine, not allowing the viewer to differentiate right from wrong, memory from imagination. The performance is an attempt to make visible an alteration, as much as a historical memory than an individual memory and collective imagination. Here, the questions that arise are: "What is the boundary between memory and history? What is the time of this place?" "Echo Walk" sets the scene for time and reality to make us more appreciate their limitations, the notion that we have through the prism of a story that we can all share. Thus, the memory of a place or what we perceive is rebuilt.

"Fragile" is an experience in which we can be mesmerized by what is not said, allow time to slow down and dream a little bit - together. Through detailed two and three-dimensional paper models and simple live animation, "Fragile" calls forth an intimate space that reimagines our relationship to scale. "Fragile" invites us to look carefully at the intricate mechanisms of the everyday. Characters from three generations face pivotal moments in their lives — growing up, growing older, and saying goodbye. The work is precise - assembled and disassembled before your very eyes.

"Farewell, Dead Clowns" is an adaptation of the work "Petit Boulot Pour Vieux Clowns" by acid Romanian author Matei Visniec, in which three old clowns meet after many years apart when seeking for the only job vacancy offered by an agency. It is a sixty-minute multi-disciplinary experience that combines flabbergasting electroacoustic soundtrack with amazing video-installation of documentary and abstract imagery. Inside of this living cube, three actors create a hypnotic symphony of voices to speak of finitude of life and our pursuit of artistic essentiality. This breathing machine affects perception of time and space, building up a non-place where these characters face each other and their past through some short frames of light and darkness.

Visual performance based on the W. Shakespeare's play "Hamlet". There are no characters in this performance. Shakespeare's famous drama "Hamlet" is a shadow play to the accompaniment of a child's voice, naively and inconsistently retelling the main themes of the play. Gertrude, Ophelia, Hamlet, Claudius, and the ghost of the former owner of Elsinore - they all are bright spots of light seen in the dark, which creates completely new and surprising associations with a textbook story. Director Leduhovsky immerses the viewer into complete darkness, in which different images are born. This production resembles a disturbing, mysterious fairy tale, a dream, with vibrant silhouette of Ophelia, whose immense veil turns suddenly into the river, and the grotesque masks of Gertrude and Claudius remind casts of dead persons. All action takes place in an unreal space - a small black box. From the emptiness of nothingness, as if from the distant past come the associative scenes based on the Shakespeare's plot.

Lecture Performance
The puppet theatre is called Karagöz, which means "black eye" and is named after the main character in the stories. According to the legend, Karagöz begun in Bursa when two men working on construction of the great mosque in 1396 performed impromptu comedy routines. The other workers enjoyed their performances so much that it slowed the progress of construction, and when the sultan heard of this situation, he condemned the two men, Karagöz and Hacivat, to death. The Karagöz stories are often based on social situations such as a contest or a business deal and the Karagöz puppet is often deceitful, lewd and a little violent - perfect skills to learn for a "hayali", the puppet master in Turkish, meaning "imaginary" or "image creator". In the lecture performance session first we will explain the historical and philosophical background of Karagöz – Turkish Shadow Puppetry and then hold a short performance.

Interactive visual theatre "The Carpet" calls you for a desert pilgrimage to a rose garden guarded by the Black Women, where roses keep people's revelations to God in their mind. The four visitors of the play are submerging through visual and mental illusions of the world of the Black Women, leading to the deep layers of reality, which are standing out of the motives of an oriental carpet. Processing the stations - where the viewers are guided in a soft and meditative way by pictures, voices, interactive set elements or apparitions - will gain a personal experience about an initiating journey inspired by the symbols and philosophies of the eastern world, mostly Sufism, filtered through and spinned together with an artistic language.

"Trinity" explores the aesthetics of gender and the idea of sacredness in our visual culture, challenging the objectification and iconification of the female form, from the Venus of Willendorf to the Virgin Mary. The performance questions the ethics and politics involved in the representation, mutation and transformation of the female form in our collective visual consciousness, from renaissance art to folklore and pop culture. Brave New Worlds create design-led performance, where the narrative, movement and moments on stage are instigated by an aesthetic concept or visual theme. Valentina Ceschi, Guoda Jaruseviciute and Kate Lane work as Director/Designers using the aesthetics as a form of visual dramaturgy. "Zuò Zuò Tea House" is an inter-active performance, a live exhibition and also a site-specific work. Digging into the history of the red-light district, all sorts of interactions were no more than psychological reflections in satisfying personal desires. The idea of this project comes from the eternal topic: everyone is eager to love and to be loved, and then referring to the contemporary social phenomenon of dating websites and mobile Apps. Therefore, a dating platform which provides love is created. This project is also inspired by some Taiwanese style "tea houses" being used as a metaphor for local brothels. Actors and actresses wait for their guests in this tea house. Audience members pick a red string randomly.

The Jungian Shadow lays curled up in the darkness of the fictional mind-body split, in the chasm that we tell ourselves separates our "civilized," "rational" selves from the "primitive," "uncultured" aspects of our being. Within this darkness dwells the "other": the deep trauma and shame of the colonized and the colonizer; the oppressed and the oppressor. The body knows these secrets – blood and sinew cannot be fooled, cannot be made to ignore these aspects of the self. Shadow Tender looks at the psychological mechanisms of demonization and dehumanization through the language of the Jungian Shadow, physical performance, costume, and biofeedback technology. The piece draws on an extensive range of conceptual research (from medieval alchemy to contemporary neuroscience) as well as a broad variety of movement styles (ballet, butoh, circus, and martial arts.) Shadow Tender is about learning to breathe with the full self – untangling the twisted muscle and locked joints, holding monsters close and tight, offering compassion instead of fear, rejection, or judgment.

Dozens of men and women formally dressed, blindfolded and covered in mud, walk slowly, poetically interfering in the flow of the city. "BLIND" is a work open to different readings: the reducing of our existence to the productive function and consumption, overwork, imprisonment and petrification of life, the automation of everyday life, and the ethical degeneration that spreads in the current state of society. The interaction of the performers with spaces that symbolizes the political and financial axis causes critical estrangement in the urban landscape. The shock visual of petrification of bodies, alienated behavior and extreme slowness of movement, instigate a reflection about the various forms of blindness, as well as the impoverishment of human experience due to the increasing of commercialization of art and bodies. First held in 2012, attended the Program Palco Giratório, circled by 29 cities from all regions of Brazil, as well as Europe and USA. Between Two Rocks draws from dance, visual art, theatre, and handcraft to transform the horizon of the theatre, pull inside out, and turn rightside down. This new work mixes moments of humour, tension, and geologic meditation, asking what compels us to journey into the unknown and how we change in the process.Taking inspiration from Norse folktale "East of the Sun and West of the Moon", a team of performers animate the stage using movement, words, and piles of fleece in a piece where scenographic performance is central. The encounter between traditional folk art and live performance, written story and oral telling, feminine and masculine, animal and human, merge in this sensory trip to the edge.

Persistence of Memory is a Grand Award winning piece of the 2016 McCullum Theatre Choreography Festival. Choreographer Ting-Ting Chang conceptualized a convergence of dance and painting, focusing on the idea of moving sculptures, and reexamining Salvador Dali's drawers and Sigmund Freud's unconscious mind. The constant emergence of the open drawers in Dali's work is the key to understanding his art. The drawers symbolize secrets, and every one of the drawers takes its own secret spot in our mind. Artists are collaborated to create a breathtaking interaction of body movement and 3D imagery. Persistence of Memory is taking the audience through a journey between the real and the surreal, where imagination is the only limitation of beauty.

A solo performance, where the dancer is using digital, visual, sensory sonic and also material interactions to create a corpus of images and generated sounds. "Corpus" is about the moving body as a visual and acoustic phenomenon. It reveals only the least necessary to create a visual and sonic poetry, which gives the viewer space for imagination. The dance has three parts as a trilogy: The performance begins with an invisible body, dancing in a interactive kinetic light costume. In the second part the dancer is feeling and filling another's body skin. The dancer's own skin is partially exposed inside a cocoon of the third part. The cocoon tears apart, the dance concludes with elements of the first parts, where dance become a entirely acoustic remembrance of a past dance, concluding a circle of mediated sensational events.

The term "interdisciplinary work" is no longer enough to refer to the tasks of a scenographer today. Pamela Howard takes herself, Susan and Jean-Guy for examples, when they are totally collaborative at work, they also set up their own collaborative teams. A textile artist might be creating a piece of furniture, and a furniture maker could contribute to a visual installation. A costume designer could be a scenographer, as the actors wearing their costume on stage becomes scenography. It's never too late to break a boundary. Art needs no walls or passports!
Photo by Susan Tsu/ Perdita-The Winter's Tale

Keynote Speech WSD2017 Scenofest
Ralph Koltai CBE was never conscious of breaking boundaries. He intuitively responded to challenges, and experimented with innovative materials never before used in stage practice. The spaces he created enhanced the experience of performers and audience. He became famous for inventing the Visual Metaphor for the production rather than reproducing stage naturalism. His creations, now in many prestigious art collections, reflect his sculptural manipulation of space, and after 67 years of work, his latest exhibition of his sculptural collages created from 'found objects' from his ancient French farm show that he was never just 'a theatre designer' but a true interdisciplinary artist of the theatre.

She resolved then, to do what she could to bring creative people together from around the world to share, without prejudice, their views about human experience. Through her innovative classes, conferences, exchanges, and international exhibitions such as the Prague Quadrennial and World Stage Design, Costume at the Turn of the Century: 1990-2015 and Innovative Costume of the 21st Century: The Next Generation , she breaks boundaries as a designer, curator and teacher!

RECONNECT is a six hours long artistic game during which we will strive to create a living and breathing translation of spatial potentials through human bodies. Starting with the reception of a plain narrative, translating it into the architectural – human formations and awaking those through light and movement, the participants will inevitably change their perception of space and get inspired to include an alive space into their practice. The workshop would be staged as a 4+1 steps in a linear chain of understanding a basic principle of creative translation in performative practice.

In this workshop, I'd like to share the real mechanics of my inspiration and work methods with students and emerging designers. Due to the nature of this subject, this can't be in the form of a lecture, but will be an interactive workshop. I have found that if you start thinking with your mind, it's much more difficult to go "out of the box". You are stuck in concrete practical data because your brain has been programmed to think logically. We'll do a couple of exercises to learn to rely more on your feelings. All the answers you have yourself but give them a chance to come to you. Give a design the chance to come to you and be surprised.

In this workshop, we will explore the concept of the Jungian Shadow on a personal, societal, and performative level. Carl Jung described the Shadow as the aspect of the psyche in which we store those parts of ourselves that we do not wish to acknowledge - things that make us feel ashamed, frightened, weak, or powerless. In rejecting our own Shadows, we unconsciously project them onto others, creating monsters and enemies that are more revealing of our own darkness than anything else. Integrating mask-making, movement, conversation, and gentle humor we will lead participants through a series of "material storytelling" exercises that draw on our devising process for Shadow Tender. By staging encounters with your personal Shadows through the medium of the mask, we will facilitate constructive dialogue about the monstrous inside of us, and address questions of identity, personal bias, and communication. In this workshop we will work on the possibilities of a theatre of materiality. Together we will investigate objects, equipment and material found on the stage, and see how they can perform and attract our attention. Another focus will be the potentialities of architectural space of the theatre. We will approach our topics very practically through try-outs. How can objects/materials become alive and how can they haunt the space? How can the space itself become a moving/sounding and acting entity?

Amongst others I will refer to works by Akram Khan, Tim Yip and Yukio Ninagawa as well as companies such as Cloud Gate, Contemporary Legend Theatre and Theatre Works. I will contrast their use of costume with that of the old intercultural practices that preceded them, those of Ariane Mnouchkine and Peter Brook primarily. When considered alongside each other, old and new interculturalism can demonstrate, through costume, a process of reclaiming and decolonization.

In addition to the RECONNECT workshop, we would like to welcome everyone to a more formal framework of a lecture and a discussion among people who share our passion for recognising space as a living, changing subject. Bringing together an international group of workshop leaders from the USA, Taiwan, and Serbia, and people from different disciplines – architecture, theatre and all interested parties - we will share the theoretical frameworks of our practices, and our experiences in elevating space from a simple envelope to an active protagonist of the performance. By exploring the possibilities of a creative translation, both across different media and diverse cultural backgrounds, we are aiming towards a profound reconnection between a performing body and the space it inhabits.

R211, Research Building 研究大樓 R211 From classic Baroque technology and scene changes to contemporary use of this versatile machinery: on the hand of video clips from a 1/10 scale model and animated technical drawings, solutions are shown for companies who have complaints and problems to play or make a production on a raked floor in Europe. We will also demonstrate unexpected possibilities of the heritage understage machinery. Mostly, when people talk or think about such historical machinery, they hypothesize it is only possible to make baroque scene changes with it as they know them from the different historical documentations. But an imaginative scenographer can surprise you with the most unexpected use of the miscellaneous opportunities of this neglected machinery in contemporary stage design for present-day productions. Besides a revaluation of this historical technique in theatrical use, this should also promote out-of-the-box thinking for designers.

The Quadrennial exhibitions, festival and education programs act as a catalyst for creative progress by encouraging experimentation, networking, innovation and future collaborations. Prague Quadrennial strives to present Performance design as an art form concerned with the creation of active performance environments that are far beyond merely decorative or beautiful. While WSD focuses on works of individual artists PQ is interested in bringing inspirationand essence of most current trends in performance design and scenography from many different areas around the world. We are interested in bringing local achievements into global context to honor, empower and celebrate the work of the designers, artists and architects as well as inspire and educate our audiences without whom our work wouldn't be valid. We will be bringing information about the next 14th edition of PQ, share the artistic concept and talk about individual planned projects with everyone interested in participating and attending. Besides the main exhibitions of Countries and Regions, Student Exhibition and Performance Space Architecture Exhibition, we are planning wide variety of projects and a new student internship that will become an important collaborative element between PQ and OISTAT.

The lecture will concentrate on the contemporary mainstream theatre in Poland. I will focus on the main tendencies and subjects that were presented on the stage in the last five years. I will look at the role of scenography in the most significant performances in the following years. I will try to analyse whether the explorations and solutions in the field of the theatre's visual arts were strengthening the message coming from the stage. There has been a discussion in the state founded theatre about the need of creating effective scenography on a substantial budget. It is claimed that education should be the main focus of the theatre rather than producing extended scenography projects. The question arises what the future of scenography is then and whether it is scenography's final time.

R211, Research Building 研究大樓 R211 Costume design and scenography, are disciplines with one foot in the discourse of performing arts and one foot in the discourse of design, fine art and architecture. Costume design is a field of study that is sometimes organized at the theatre department, sometimes at the design or fine arts department. Where the costume study is located, seems more as a result of tradition than of a critical discussion on what is necessary in order to educate competent costume designers. Wherever the location is, there is a need for securing access to being a part of both discourses and to access both fields of knowledge. Based on her experience as costume designer, scenographer and educator, the presenter will share with the participants her thoughts and a 'competence list' for costume designers as a basis for discussion.

SIMONA RYBÁKOVÁ This presentation will discuss costume design as a complex discipline through visual examples of Rybáková's work including big opera productions, small independent theatres, feature film, TV and conceptual projects with students. Common for all of these works is a strong focus on the relations between costume designer - set designer - director. Rybáková will attempt to bring out both positive and negative aspects of long-term work in an established team and emphasize the importance of analytical self-reflection when improving the quality of future projects. Topic 2
Scenic design as a tool of interpretation
JULI BALÁZS Scenic design is the joint statement of the director and the designers. In this presentation, Balázs will give an insight into her work, in particular into the design process, bringing case studies from low budget alternative theatres to big national theatre productions. She will introduce different methods and practices from the first analysis of the theatre piece to the last touches before the premiere. Balázs will show how a design can define and be an embodiment of an artistic approach. She will also present some experiments regarding video projection and the use of multimedia on stage.

Thinking Costume
TD103, Theatre and Dance Building 戲舞大樓 TD103 Thinking Costume is a two-day research seminar that brings together a multidisciplinary group of researchers and practitioners working on costume-related and costume-led research projects. The seminar aims to offer peer-support for early career researchers and academics conducting research in the field of costume or in related artistic fields involving dress and performance in theatre, film and media. The seminar focuses on the development of their research work by inviting participants to 'think about and through costume' and provides peer tutoring, feedback and a forum for dialogue and exchange of ideas. It aims to establish a networking practice for sharing the latest news, trends and enquiries in costume research, generating opportunities for future research collaborations, and offering critical feedback by international and distinguished peers. Proposals included in the programme were selected through a blind peer-review process.

The costume workshop Designers on the Edge aims to provoke young and experienced designers over the boundaries of the forms, the materials and the techniques, considering the costume and its spatial relation as the body's edge, thinking about them as expressions of potency, wishes, limits or repression. The costume will not be created as one external piece to be worn, but as a live piece, an acting part of body. This workshop is for designers who wish to have a performance experience as part of creating, exploring their own inquietudes both in the physical materialization as with the emotions expressed by their body/ costume creation.
