made in singapore As part of Tattler’s efforts to highlight bits of local fashion to you, we will be showcasing local designers who catch our eye every issue. This is our way of waving our pompoms and saying ‘GO GO GO!’ for the local fashion scene. So we are honoured to kick off our first issue with the designers of local labels Ownmuse and L’ile Aux Ashby, who have charmed us with their designs during the Parco show last November.

wnmuse charmed us with their pretty cut outs and soft yet structured creations. Described as ‘vintage with a modern twist’, it may sound like an oxymoron to some, but looking at their designs, the logic becomes apparent. With ‘the elegance and femininity of the vintage style to the present, tempered by a touch of rawness and edge, the garments (Ownmuse) creates are distinctly ours, bold yet feminine, vintage with a modern twist’, creating an aesthetic that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of women our age.
What was your inspiration for this collection? “For this collection, we were inspired by the monuments and architecture of Paris, which symbolize our dream of making it in the fashion world. So we took elements from the Eiffel tower and other great monuments, and used them in our designs. We also used a lot of very structured fabrics and mixed them with soft, lightweight fabrics. This represents the journey we have to go through to be successful We’ll let Shu Juang and Johanna in the future. The soft, flowy fabrics tell you about Ownmuse themrepresent our carefree and fun times selves: we have together, and the structured, What’s your biggest obstacle so far? more rigid fabrics represent the hard work we have to put in to make it in “Being fresh graduates, learning all the fashion industry. the ropes of starting a company from scratch hasn’t been as easy as expected. As school had been very design focused for us, it has definitely been a little harder carrying out the business aspects of the company. It’s a learning process however, and we’re glad we’ve got the chance of having mentors to guide us step by step.” And the proudest moment? “That would probably have to be the Parco nextNext fashion show, when we showcased Ownmuse’s very first show collection. going local

Local brands have it harder from the get-go: the challenge to make their names known, and to have them to be held in the same regard as their bigger, mass-produced counterparts, for one. There’s a tough balancing act: factors like quantity, market, image, designs – to actually design, to have their designs worn and lastly to keep a healthy bottomline are not easy, especially for a newbie.
aking it in the local fashion industry is challenging. >>>>
So define the Ownmuse girl. “The person who wears Ownmuse is someone who isn’t afraid to be herself. She knows what she wants and just goes for it. One day she’s in a plain white tee with chunky accessories, another day she’s in a romantic pastel coloured skirt and a cropped top. She isn’t afraid to set her own trends, but she always remains tasteful and stylish. “
One way we can support them is to consider these brands when we are looking for well-made, classic pieces that come in limited quantities.
How about your personal style? Johanna is a little more classic and feminine, she loves her pastels. Shu juang is bolder in her choices, what with leopard prints chunky accessories. But always being inspired by each other, you’ll usually see them mixing it up and switching styles. I guess they’re both a little of both.
Especially those that you will love and enjoy wearing for a relatively long time, quality and value is definitely the way to go. And going local is one easy way to suss out quality pieces, and to discover what gems lie out there. I must point out that it’s about value – the fact that a tee-shirt is $150 doesn’t mean it’s worth it – you’ll have to make your call when the time comes.
C’mon, give us a sneak peek of your next collection: “We don’t want to spoil the surprise! Definitely a few more simple pieces with subtle detailing which we have always loved. And much more modern vintage to come.” 9
Then it’s about being adventurous and open-minded, and trying out what local designers have to offer. With a bit of imagination and experimentation, we can support our local fashion scene a piece at a time - the great and inspiring talents, at least.

Shimmer Waves in Bronze by The Body Shop creates a healthy glow when applied all over on face. The ultra fine talc is a high performance powder that helps in a smooth and even application while the pearl pigments provides a sparkling shimmer to the complexion. Start the year 2010 with a new glowing you. To achieve this look, look out for bronzy to gold colour palettes that will help bring the out the radiance in you. Instead of using yellow-toned gold, try antique golds instead with a mix of bronze shimmers.

go weak at the knees when I see a 4-inch pair of heels. At 1.65m, some would say I am tall enough. My dad and brother never fail to ask: “why do you need to wear such high heels?” whenever we go out for fancy dinners. For me, I love wearing heels. The arch of my feet, the better posture and the longer looking legs. Yes, I admit, sometimes I come home with sore feet from walking around in them heels for 5 hours straight. But once those temporary pains go away, I’m back wearing my heels.

This season, the footwear available range from sensible flats at Calvin Klein to the towering madness at Alexander McQueen. I can’t bear to feature sandals which look like you could get them at Hush Puppies, so the best I could do with for flats were the lovely red oxfords from Comme des Garçons. One thing I spotted this season: Ankle straps. Which might work for some who have dainty ankles/ do not have cankles. What’s most important is where the strap hits - It should hit just below your ankles. 14

Investment pieces”
- that’s what they’re called. Yes, they might appear to cost a HUGE bomb, what with the three to four digits on the price tag. Actually, you won’t even get the chance to sneak a peek at the price tag. The item would probably be encased and only within the reach of the snobby sales person behind the counter. (A major peeve of mine: people who work at high-end stores give off this kind of attitude, thinking you can’t possibly afford anything in the store. I’ve had one sales person eye me from head to toe, trying to make sense of what clothes I’m wearing, what bag I’m carrying, what watch I’m wearing and the shoes I’m walking in. GROSS. Walk out immediately, even though yes, maybe she could have gotten a bit of commission from an item I was looking at. Too Bad.)
Oscar de la Renta :– Bold earrings, perfect for days with your hair in a messy bun or high ponytail 17

Once again, I digress, but I’m sure you have experienced this before, unless you really wear distinctive labels from head to toe. Back to the topic, investment pieces are not just smart choices. Yes, you can wear them with your basic white tees, but you can also use them to dress up your little black dress. Not only that, they are classic pieces which eventually become family heirlooms and are passed down from generation to generation. This, my dear reader, goes further than a beautiful piece of jewellery. There will be a great story behind every single piece in your jewellery box.
Lanvin :– Fierce and totally wearable with a white tee and jeans or an evening dress
Now some of you may say, I’m in my 20’s, what do I care about spending most of my allowance (heck, it’s not even my money, it’s on my dad’s supplementary card, but still...) on a piece of jewellery that friends or people on the street won’t even be able to recognise or appreciate? Well, I say, I hate buying cheap jewellery that’s pretty but tarnishes after awhile. I’d rather pay more for some quality. And think about it, all that matters is how you feel when you wear the piece of expensive jewellery.
18
Dries Van Noten : – a different take on the oft mentioned pearls and stones
And if you do feel fabulous enough, you’ll probably wear it often and create many unforgettable memories while you’re wearing it. Sure, there are classics that are absolute must-haves at one point in one’s life – the strand of Chanel pearls, the Rolex watch, the Cartier bangle, the Bvlgari ring, a Tiffany diamond and others. But there are new pieces from SS10 which can become your very own classics.
Vera Wang :– so delicate, perfect to throw over a little black dress 19

DHC Olive Essential Series
Laea reviews...
Deep Cleansing oil 5/5
D
HC, the legendary skincare brand from Japan has arrived on our shores bringing to us their best selling products. DHC Olive Essential Series is a ‘4-step program to Total Skin Beauty’ consisting of a Deep Cleansing Oil, Mild Soap, Mild Lotion and Olive Virgin Oil, all of which containing the powerful and antioxidant properties of Olive oil. The range delivers intensive moisture and protection to all skin types, even for the most sensitive skin types.
The oil, which is derived from premium olive oil and rosemary, is very light weight and non sticky. It blends really well to remove a full face of makeup and leaves a pleasant clean feeling. The experience was very enjoyable, leaving the skin with no makeup or any feelings of stickiness common to other cleansing oils. The simplistic design of the bottle is aesthetically pleasing, making the whole ritual feel even more simple and easy. After a week of use, clogged pores are noticeably reduced. This product boasts a sale count of 300 000 bottles monthly in Japan and it is easy to understand why.

DHC Olive Essential Series uses only hand-picked premium grade organic olives found in Spain’s Andalusian region. No fragrances, colour or parabens are added into 100% natural beauty oil.
Mild Soap 4/5
Olive Virgin Oil 3/5
Concocted with Olive Virgin Oil and Honey, the soap produces delightful whipped cream-like foam that makes washing fun. The foam spreads easily on the face and leaves the face feeling moist and fresh. It cleans thoroughly and does not leave a ‘tight’ feeling.
DHC Olive Virgin Oil is a non-sticky oil which makes the application smooth and allows for easy blending. It absorbs into the skin fast and keeps the skin hydrated. Despite my initial scepticism, this product did not clog the pores but instead helped to draw out impurities in the skin. A small amount goes a long way, just one drop is all it takes for gentle patting on the entire face. I gave a score of 3 only because I prefer my moisturiser to leave a fresher feeling for a perky start of day. As an alternative, I use this product every other day to still reap its benefits.
Mild Lotion 4/5 DHC Mild Lotion has cucumber and plant extracts in the ingredient list. It has a natural astringent effect which helps to tighten pores and curb the excess sebum. A mild toner cools the face leaving it feeling fresh and clean.

concealing those eye bags by laea
e’ve survived our fair share of late nights for many reasons. Late night studying, deadlines ( cough ), night out with the girls and long hot dates with that special someone. Then come mornings that greet us with horrendous eye bags and if we’re lucky enough, a hangover as a hit combo set meal. For some out there, having eye bags is an everyday part of our lives due to genetics. Here are some tips to help conceal those under eyes.
T
o decide on a shade, swab 3 shades that you think are closest to your skin tone. With this comparison, you can then easily pick the shade that is most ideal. Always choose a yellow based concealer if you’re Asian as it is more flattering.
Step 1 Notice and observe where the skin tone is darkened by eye bags.
Step 2 Apply concealer under the eye from the inner corner to the outer corner in a triangle shape, spreading it south, pass the eye area. This helps to blend the colour down, making it look more natural.
29
Step 3 Blend gently to the outer corner of the eye, making sure that the product is spread evenly. You can blend with a concealer brush or your fingertips. Using the fingertips helps to warm up the product, making it easier to blend.
beauty
Having trouble?
If the product does not seem to blend well, you might want to take a closer look at your skin type versus the product texture. It’s easiest to use cream concealers for beginners as you can control amount of product used to learn blending. Liquid concealers needs more practiced hands as they dry faster. If your eye arears look chalky or grey, it means that the shade you choose is too light for your skin tone. Remember that your goal is to conceal, so it has to look as natural as possible.
TRY IT! Bourjois Imperfection Concealor is creamy and blends smoothly on
“ The best way to conceal eye bags is to keep them at bay.
Having enough rest and keeping yourself hydrated are key habits that will help. If your skin always looks tired, you might like to try drinking to beauty. Nourishing drinks brimming with added vitamins or collagen make you feel better on the inside while letting you look healthier on the outside. Have these as supplements to your diet to support you through your busy lifestyle.

January NEW Album Releases reviews by nikko
Katherine Macphee – Unbroken Label : Verve Forecast This is the second album released by this pretty American Idol contestant. She certainly has vocal abilities, however after listening to her first release ‘Had it All’ one has to wonder whether she’s turning country while morphing into Victoria Beckham look-wise. Her latest album is filled with love ballads, some of which aren’t that bad. Whatever the case is, looks sell, and I’m sure this album will too. If you like ‘Unbroken’, you may also find yourself liking American Idols first ever winner Kelly Clarkson or 2006’s ‘The X Factor’s’ winner Leona Lewis.
Kanye West – VH1 Storytellers (Live DVD/CD) Label: Def Jam/Roc A Fella Kanye must have quite a few haters out there following his VMA ‘heartless’ incident with Taylor Swift and his lash out at Radiohead’s frontman Thom Yorke. But with all that behind him he now manages to create a proper hip-hop album with all the typical commercially needed catchy beats and rhymes. As the majority of albums released today maybe only 30% - 40% are worth your money (or RAM space). If you’re drawn to this ‘bad boy’, you’ll probably enjoy other ‘baddies’ in the hip-hop scene such as Chris Brown and P. Diddy.
31
Kesha – Animal Label: RCA Her debut single “Tik Tok” reached number one in different countries and set a record in the US female weekly download. With such response it would seem like the perfect time to release a record –which is exactly what she did! According to Kesha, all she wants to do with her music is to “give people something that brings them joy”, and she certainly has, with this catchy album that is a mix of pop, dance, and electronic. If find you fancy a party pumping album, like ‘Animal’, you will also enjoy the fabulously wacky Lady Gaga.
This is War is 30STM’s third album, and they have definitely played it safe. It comes across as another alternative rock album but it does fair slightly better. The band really made use of their recordings during their organized fan gathering, which the band called “The Summit”, as practically every track has their fans either sounding like mad rioters or a peace-loving choir. As for the song, ‘Escape’ (the intro track), it is a bit of a disappointment as the buildup isn’t strong enough to carry the intensity of the album title. Some of their better tracks include ‘Kings and Queens’, ‘Hurricane’, and ‘Stranger in a Strange Land’. Their 6th track titled ‘Hurricane’ is a decent hip-hop and rock fusion but ‘Stranger in a Strange Land’ is probably the best track of the whole album. In general, this an album for people who enjoy epic sounding tracks. 32
lifestyle The Grammy award winner Alicia Keys is back with her 14-track album titled “The Elements of Freedom” which she describes as having a “strong, edgy feeling” as well as being “intimate, vulnerable and delicate”. Her lyrics seem a bit tautological as they mainly center on love and broken hearts but she manages to make up for it both musically and vocally. “The Elements of Freedom” does carry good tracks such as ‘Doesn’t Mean Anything’, “Wait Till You See My Smile”, ‘Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart’, and the breathy ‘Distance and Time’. Some songs you might want to skip would be “This Bed”, “Empire State of Mind (Part II) Broken Down”, and her collaboration with Beyonce “Put It In A Love Song”. You could summarize her newest album as another good easy listening love album.
Lifehouse – Smoke and Mirrors Label: Dreamworks/Geffen The talented group responsible for the highly popular songs like, “Blind”, “Everywhere”, and “You and Me” are back with a new album “Smoke and Mirrors”. Lifehouse is expected to release their fifth studio album sometime this month, which makes this my most anticipated album of the month. “Halfway Gone” which is the first single released off the album, has already reached the top 10 in the U.S Billboard Adult Top 40. If your musical inclinations are toward Augustana, Five For Fighting, or Matchbox Twenty, then you would probably also appreciate Lifehouse. 33
lifestyle
Jaime Foxx – Body Label: J-Records With Jaime Foxx’s latest album, ‘Body’, one can probably imagine that his lyrics contain explicit details about bodies. His “Speak French” track is the first release off the new album and it has some good bars but gets a bit monotonous after a while. I have never really considered Jaime Foxx to be a musician ever since his first album came out. However, considering that he has been nominated for several Grammy Awards and his second album “Unpredictable” reached number one in the US album chart one has high hopes for ‘Body’. If you like sexy RnB/Hip Hop albums like T-Pain, Ginuwine, and Keyshia Cole, you should check out ‘Body’.
Usher – Raymond v Raymond Label: LaFace ‘Raymond v Raymond’ is definitely one of the better R&B albums to look out for this month. Usher, who has recently filed for a divorce, has apparently found inspiration from that experience and managed to produce a self-confessional album. It is radiofriendly and creates a great party atmosphere with its ability to draw crowds to the dance floor. The album’s first official single “Hey Daddy (Daddy’s Home)” has yet to make it to the charts, although his other single “Papers” reached number one on the US Hot R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart. Check out ‘Raymond v Raymond’ if you find yourself in need of more R&B bass beats similar to Chris Brown, Mario, Ne-Yo, and Omarion. 34

an 28 was a hallmark in Singapore’s music diary. Boys Like Girls, the red-hot Boston band made a stopover in Singapore (as part of their Asia Tour 2010) and thrilled local audiences with their sizzling stage acts:
In the tweeting words of Paul DiGovanni (BLG’s lead guitarist) “One of the top 5 shows in BLG history, Singapore… That was incredible!”
To make it even more memorable, BLG made their mark as the first ever band to perform at the recently opened Compass Ballroom located in Sentosa at the Hard Rock Hotel Resorts World. You could tell that Boys Like Girls were pretty psyched to be back performing in the sunny island of Singapore, highlighted by the dialogue and energy displayed throughout the show. Both Martin Johnson (BLG’s frontman) and DiGovanni knew how to get the crowd -especially the young, screaming & adoring fans with their cheesy heart-shaped hand signs, exclaiming how the band was “really excited to be back in Singapore for the second time”. 40

They kicked off their rock concert with an interesting BLG interpretation of Black Eyed Peas’ track, “I Got a Feeling” before moving on to the song Love Drunk, which is the first single off their second album coincidentally titled, Love Drunk. Some of the other songs included on the set list were “Five minutes to Midnight”, “She’s Got a Boyfriend Now”, and “Hero”.
For the encore, John Keefer (BLG’s drummer) performed an entertaining drum solo accompanied by a premixed hip-hop mash up with songs by R&B artistes such as Rihanna and Chris Brown. For the “The Great Escape” which was the last, and final song for the night, Johnson decided to let the people behind the ($78 ticketholders) barricades upfront. There was a mad rush followed by a high-energy performance. By the time the lights turned on there were kids running around keeping the security busy as they tried to escape backstage; there were also some heart broken girls walking around crying. These girls definitely love the boys of Boys Like Girls! - Well, don’t we all!

1. Make use of the $4k I paid for a gym membership = Go to the gym at least twice a week. 2. Go running around the neighbourhood at least once a week. All the sitting in front of the computer at work is not doing any good. 3. Be more patient with my family. With my mom when she needs my help. With my dad when he doesn’t understand the point I’m making. With my sister when she’s being whiney. As for my brother, nah, we’re good at being impatient with one another. 4. Save up 70% of my pay during my internship, to get the parents to support my decision to go for summer studies in Korea. (note: a 5-month resolution + if I get selected) 5. 5. To our dear readers, we hope you have a sweet, memorable february 14th! “Love me when I least deserve it, because that’s when I really need it.” - A Swedish Proverb This quote says it all. There are days when I can be in a really foul, mean mood. But I’d love it if you could show me the same amount of love that day. And I promise to be a better person for it. Also, it’s so dumb to just get all lovey just ‘cos cupid says so! Surprise me with flowers on any other day <3 debby
