Northern Ireland is on the map for all the right reasons. We’ve got worldwide media and film, television shows and some fantastic musicians - but (and call me biased if you want to) I think it is our tattoo scene that is worthy of it’s worldwide recognition. Our “homegrown” talent is rocking the worldwide stage for all the right reasons and it feels pretty good. The summer brings with it convention season, and in this issue check out what we got up to when we headed out to the Maiden City Ink Tattoo Convention and the NI Tattoo Convention. We’ve also got an article written by Ritchie Connor from Primal Ink Tattoo in Armagh and an editorial from the brains behind Purebred Apparel. The design pages give plenty to inspire you towards your next inking, and if you are interested in getting the work done or buying some prints do hit up the artists for a chat - their details are listed under their work. Recent studio work showcases some of our favourite pieces from our artists. When I see it all laid out like that, I am blown away by the sheer talent we have here at home. When Tattoo’s NI was a burgeoning idea, I don’t think we saw it as being a magazine, or gaining the support it has this year. We’ve been completely blown away by the love and kind words from all of you, it’s what keeps us going to achieve more and really get the tattoo scene of which we are so proud of out there. We’ve had a lot of fun putting this issue together, and hope you enjoy it. Keep an eye out on the website and facebook for further events and notices to come - it’s a very exciting time for us here at Tattoo’s NI and it’s great to have you along. Peace,

I

t all starts with a single dot... a single dot can in turn manifest into a design compiled from your own imagination... you can create anything you want from a single dot... for me it’s a drive to create. A structure to connect those dots and put onto to paper what is in my head... a feeling of peace is found when I dot the night away... I focus and concentrate on each individual placement and everything else in the world disappears... there is nothing... nothing but dots... it takes time and dedication and it doesn’t always work... I’ve scrapped more designs than enough but it’s not about the final outcome for me... I trust in it... whether it’s a Mandala, a portrait, a geometric design... you are free to create whatever you have held inside your mind and to connect them all and create a finished product a sense of completion ensues... If I do a design and someone likes it enough that they want it tattooed then that is an added bonus... for me it’s the feeling of getting lost in it... the feeling of ‘connecting’ things to create a bigger picture... it leads me to a place where I need to be away from the daily struggles of life... one simple dot that’s all it takes to start... I would say it’s the same for all artists who create something whether it’s a painting or music or whatever... they all feel they need to get something out of themselves. and strive to do so the only way they know how... 4

It all starts with an idea... a flash in the head and a umcompelling urge to release it into the world... I pick up my pen and start... bit by bit, dot by dot my intensity grows and an image forms... does it need more? Does it need less? The journey is more important than the destination in my case... I would sit for hours on a single piece, drowning out the world, silencing my demons until I found ultimate peace in the negative space... It’s what I do when I’m not tattooing and whether or not a masterpeace is created is irrelevent... The time and energy spent is worth it to find the peace in a somewhat chaotic world... in that moment nothing exists to me but the dots and a sense of peace. Images & Words: Ritchie Connor

MAIDEN CITY INK TATTOO CONVENTION IMAGES AND WORDS BY KEZZY

T

he Everglades Hotel once again played host to the 5th Maiden City Ink International Tattoo Convention. I always enjoy the juxtaposition of the bright hair, pierced alternative people with the quiet elegance of the Hastings Hotel, and as usual the hotel was the perfect host for the occasion, with a well stocked bar and delicious hot food served all day. Call it a passion, call it a life choice, call it whatever you want - conventions are an important outlay for artists and enthusiasts alike. For the artist, it’s a chance to showcase their skills, and for the enthusiast, a chance to display their work with pride.

7

Conventions can be awe-inspiring, but also intimidating. If you aren’t used to the alternative scene, walking in to a variety of people covered in ink and piercings can be a scary thought, and walking around watching the artists engrossed in their work, how can you try to interrupt them to ask questions? However this is not the case here, as walking through the Maiden City convention is not at all intimidating. In fact, it’s probably my favourite convention as everyone is warm, friendly and welcoming, especially towards people new to tattooing and to parents and kids alike.

WILLY G - WINNER OF BEST JAPANESE Email: info@willygtattoo.com Phone: 02893 373 974

I am a massive fan of tattoo art, and I am that annoying person that will ask endless questions - where did you get it, who did it,why did you get it...? Conventions are a great place to indulge in the guiltiest of my pleasures - seeing the artists in action and getting to check out all the amazing ink on show from the patrons through the doors. Where else can you spend a weekend with like-minded people, trading hints and tips on studios and find inspiration (or maybe your next artist!) for your next tattoo. The convention has been growing in popularity since the first - and this shows in the wealth of talent attracted to attend this year as well as the number of people through the doors. In 2010, a survey conducted by the website Ask Jeeves found that around one-fifth of adults in the UK have a tattoo - and in the age bracket 16-44, that raises to 29%.

Not only was the Maiden City well stocked with Of course, the Maiden City convention is open to talented artists from across the province and everyone, with no upper or lower age limit (except across the UK but also with stalls selling their the one to get a tattoo or piercing!) and it wasn’t wares, from jewellery to t-shirts and awesome trinkets, and with live music all day in the bar only those “young’uns” walking around there was something for everyone. showing off their ink! 8

There was a great buzz of energy in the main arena, an air of general excitement mixed with the sound of the tattoo machines working away. The convention hall offered the chance to observe, or for the lucky few to be ink’d by, the artists showcasing their skills. Although most artists were fully booked for the entire convention, they still managed to stop and answer questions to the hoards of tattoo art devotees checking out their booths and their work. I don’t know about you, but as much as I love flicking through each artist’s portfolio, it’s a completely different thing to watch those amazing works of art being created before your very eyes. I highly recommend a walk through first thing in the morning to see those pieces start off as line drawings and returning later for the finished pieces.

Ten categories this year which included Best Full Leg Piece, Best Traditional and Best Black and Grey. The competition was set aside in a separate room from the main convention, which is a great idea as it was quiet and gave the ability to concentrate on the entrants without the distraction of the hubbub of the convention area. The quality of work was excellent, from fantastic portraiture of Floyd Mayweather and Heath Ledger’s Joker, to a full leg of cartoon and gaming characters. Best crazy as ever threw up typical hilariousness (penis banana, anyone?). Best in show went to Dean McLaughlin of Belfast City Skinworks for his pirate themed full leg piece (which also won Best Colour). Congratulations to all of the winners, the quality of art work judged this year was superb.

The main draw of the convention is, as always the competition, headlined by the stunning Jackrabbit taxidermy prize for Best in Show.

My personal highlight of the weekend has to be Liam (pictured), who took the plunge and got his first tattoo. The elation and excitement he felt brings me back to the feeling I get every-time I walk out of a studio, wrapped in clingfilm and clutching my aftercare sheet.

9

The Maiden City Convention kicked off the 2015 convention season in style, and will be a hard act to follow. A well organised, well thought of and enjoyable convention, with the high quality of talented artists and friendly banter we’ve come to expect from the Maiden City, we are definitely looking forward to the sixth!

Purebred Apparel is a Belfast born custom clothing and design company owned and run by Kieran Hill. The brand is a culmination of over a decade in the design and marketing business and a love for all things metal! “I have always had an interest in art from an early age. I decided early on that digital was the way to go for me. I started out in an appreticeship at a small, family run print business. There I got to learn my craft inside and out, not only deisgn but the science in print production across a wide range of mediums. After 10 years, I felt a need to make a mark and develop my own skills. After a lot of beard scratching and 4am smoke clouded, whisky soaked brain storming sessions, Purebred Apparel was born.

13

From the get go, Purebred was a brand aimed very much at other creatives, and commissioned work for local bands started coming pretty quickly. Fast forward a year, and the brand has become something I am very proud of. I’ve had the pleasure of producing orignal artwork for many local bands and I am increasingly becoming more and more involved with tattoo studios. It’s both bullshit and amazing to be trusted by great artists to produce my own designs to promote them. I can be a harsh critic of my own work, but it’s all the more gratifying to receive great feedback on my efforts. This also gives me the chance to try different styles for different artists and further my own skills.” Purebred Apparel offers a dedicated, promotional printing service to the tattoo industry, with a focus on high quality, custom merchandising.

NI Tattoo Convention 2015

Images by Tattoosni - Words by Melanie Brehaut

R

oll up, roll up folks, for the 5th annual NI Tattoo Convention! The Ulster Hall, normally home to various musical events, was singing a different tune during the May Bank Holiday weekend – that of the deep, droning buzz of dozens of tattoo machines. For a mere £12 per day pass or £20 weekend pass, you entered into a tattoo wonderland, complete with seventy five local and international artists, piercers, prints on sale, tattoo equipment, clothes, jewellery and trinkets, acoustic music and a full bar! What more could you possibly ask for?! The artists themselves ranged from traditional Samoan hand tattooing to old school to photorealism and everything in between. A walk up and down the aisles was an absolute treat for the eyes: a riot of colour, with faces etched with concentration (or pain hehe). The calibre of artists at this convention always had the capacity to amaze and impress, and 2015 was no different. 15

Those seeking a quiet moment and the chance to take a load off simply headed upstairs to the well stocked bar, grabbed a pint and took a seat to listen to the acoustic stylings of musicians such as Nathan Hughes, Sorcha & Hannah and Mere Moths. Time to relax... Not for too long though! Any available slots with the tattooers rapidly filled, with those quick enough to be on the ball getting those coveted walk up appointments with their favourite artists. It has to be said that every one of them worked tirelessly through the whole weekend; there were precious few sightings of that rarest of creatures ‘resting tattoo artist’!

The great thing about this convention is, with so many local tattooers attending, it’s an ideal way to scope out their talent and discover who you would like to do your next (or first!) tattoo, grab a business card and start making plans. Sunday was, as usual, the main judging day, with only ‘Best of Saturday’ preceding it. That prize was won by Jordan Croke of Second Skin in Derby for his gorgeous, delicate tattoo of a robin. The NI Tattoo Convention may be relatively small compared to the likes of London or Brighton, but it certainly isn’t lacking in talented artists or a determined drive to succeed. The move into the extended Waterfront Hall next year will undoubtedly add to both the size of the convention in terms of artist numbers and merchandise stalls and its reputation as a convention to be reckoned with. See you there next year! TattoosNI spoke to a number of artists working at the convention this year. Here’s what they had to say. 16

The ‘adopted Belfast son’, Shane Sunday of Alternative Ink: How’s your convention been so far? It’s been fun, it’s been tiring! Did you enjoy doing Pinhead (from horror classic Hellraiser) yesterday? Loved it! It was stressful as all hell (laughs). Well it turned out really well! Well thank you! What do you think of the level of talent in Northern Ireland? It’s awesome. Is it ever good! I thought I was good, but I know now that I need to work at it (laughs).

How does it differ from where you’re from? I think it only differs in that’s it’s new-ish; quality tattoos are new-ish, whereas in Toronto if you couldn’t do a quality tattoo you wouldn’t survive. People here are now getting used to the idea of a quality tattoo, whereas before they maybe had to just put up with any old shit they could get. There’s more choice now. And do you think that’s because the scene is starting to flourish now, and people want to get to know who’s working here so they can actually go and get tattooed by them? Yeah, that’s it. I mean, it’s good that people can come and get tattooed by artists who are travelling here. But they also want to know who’s good here, and who’s worth going to. It took me awhile to figure that out, but yeah, it’s cool. 17

So how do you think the Northern Ireland convention compares to other places you been and where you’re from (Toronto)? I haven’t followed it or been a part of it for years; I wasn’t a part of it last year just because I thought that tattoo conventions were really part of the international scene – to see new and exciting people – but this convention is a home based convention. And that’s good! I didn’t do it last year because I wanted to see what this convention was about, and I realised that the people who come want to know about the people here, and they’re happy to meet people from outside of here. So that’s what I think about this one. I had – it wasn’t a snobbish view – but I think a lot of artists think we should have international artists, and be meeting them. But in Belfast it’s not about that. In Belfast it’s about the people who work in and around Belfast.

The local artist, Grainne Laverty of Ahoy Ruby Tattoo: How do you feel that this convention stacks up compared to others that you’ve been to or worked at? I think for being in its 5th year, and Northern Ireland being such a small country, it’s brilliant. I’ve been here every year and I’ve been to the likes of Milan, London and this is so high ranking for such a small country. I think the standard of work being done here is very, very high. What do you think of the move next year into the Waterfront? Do you think it will improve the convention? Definitely. It’s been nice to have five years in the Ulster Hall because it’s such a lovely venue, but it is starting to get a bit cramped! So I think it’s definitely the right way forward and will open the doors for even bigger, more well known artists to come over. I think in another five years time that this could be one of the biggest shows in the UK; it’s definitely heading that way. There’s a lot of people with good connections bringing brilliant artists over to the show, so it’s an honour to even be working at it. I’m glad that I can still work at it, having been here from year one. What do you think of the calibre of artists working in Northern Ireland?

19

It seems to be getting better and better. And there seems to be artists popping up that I’ve never heard of, and next thing you’re just nosying through Facebook and come across a page and you think “my God, where did this person come from?!” - their work is unbelievable and they’re just come from out of nowhere. A couple of people in particular would be Alan Hindes, Rory O Neil and Willy G who I’ve only heard of recently and they’re work is just amazing. I’m very proud to say that they’re from here. And obviously there’s the so-called amazing ‘old timers’ that have been around for longer, but those two in particular stick out in my mind because their work is brilliant and really speaks for itself.

Do you think it’s getting easier for female artists in the industry these days? Is it getting to just be more common? It’s definitely getting easier. I found even going back to the first year of this convention that it wasn’t a problem that I’m a woman. I’m not what you’d called a standard feminist; I believe in some feminist ideals but not all of them. So I think that sometimes if I feel that I’m being treated unfairly it could just be a coincidence, not just because I’m a woman. So I think it’s fine and it’s very much accepted now. Are more men coming round to the idea that just because you go to a female artist, you won’t get a girly tattoo? Exactly. I have a lot of male customers. People ask me if I only tattoo females, and it’s definitely not the case. It’s maybe 60/40 to men. Are you having a busy convention work wise? Yes! I’m working on a piece today that I was hoping to get finished yesterday but ran out of time – I had a baby four months ago so I had to keep going to check on her! So I’ll get that finished today, it’s a Star Wars themed piece. And then I’ll be working on a piece that I’ve already started so he’ll come in and I’ll keep working on that, I’m looking forward to continuing it because it’s already outlined – all the groundwork’s done! So I’ll get some shading done. And then, if I get time there’s one more piece I’d like to do of a line drawing of mine on my apprentice John, so we’ll see if I get time (laughs).

The International Visiting Artist, Gav Skelton of Hidden Lair Tattoo: Welcome! How many times have you been at the Northern Ireland Tattoo Convention? This is my second year. Why did you come back after your first one? What brought you back? It’s kind of like a pilgrimage, for want of a better word! People are really nice and it’s just a really refreshing place to do tattoos. There’s loads to see around the city, and you’re always well received when you come over, so why wouldn’t I? What do you think of the quality of Northern Irish tattooers, compared to the rest of the UK? Across the board there’s probably not a massive amount of difference, but if you look around here today, there’s some really shit hot artists! (laughs). It really is tough! Some of the people coming out of Northern Ireland right now are just...wow. Do you think you’ll come back next year when it moves to a bigger venue? Definitely, definitely. I’m not just saying this, but this is probably one of my favourite conventions that I would do every year. How many would you do in a year? Around seven or eight? Obviously it’s busier in the summer; then I would go to about one a month. But there’s just something about this one. It’s a bit more family friendly, you can talk to the organisers like they’re your mate, everyone is well received – it’s just a nice place. It doesn’t feel formal – it’s like I’m tattooing with my mates. Have you been busy this year?

21

Yes (laughs) Most definitely, yes! (NB Gav spent most of the Sunday tattooing yours truly!).
