Sponshorship Brochure The Story…The Plan…The Goal

Introduction to Project We have exciting news to share with you about an incredible new place coming soon to our beautiful City of Salinas. This fall, it will be our goal to create a one-of-a-kind, community-built, community and corporately-funded playground— centrally located in the heart of Salinas in Sherwood Park—a place that promotes active play, stimulates the imagination, and is fully accessible and all-inclusive for our children, regardless of their physical abilities. The playground is to be named Tatum’s Garden. We would like to take a moment to share this incredible opportunity with you, hoping you will come alongside us to bring this vision to reality through your financial sponsorship. The dream of this amazing playground, Tatum’s Garden, has been inspired by a sweet little girl in Salinas, named Tatum, who was born in 2010 with Spina Bifida, leaving her with paralysis and loss of sensation in her legs. At age 2 ½, she has already mastered getting around in her custom wheelchair. However, her parents, Shawn and Amanda Bakker, realized there is not a playground in Monterey County—in fact, in a 250-mile radius of Salinas—that is fully accessible and inclusive, where Tatum can play side-by-side with her siblings and friends. They also realized she is only one representative of the special needs community in Monterey County, which includes over 6,800 children enrolled in special education, with various physical, emotional or mental disabilities, longing for a safe and beautiful place to play and just “be kids.” The planning committees of Tatum’s Garden have allied with the well-established and respected, local nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, the Salinas Circle for Children, who are acting as our fiscal agent for fundraising purposes. This allows us to designate all contributions for Tatum’s Garden as tax-deductible donations. Our vision to bring this beautiful, sensoryrich and inclusive playground to Salinas easily falls within Salinas Circle for Children’s mission statement: “The purpose of the Salinas Circle for Children is to raise and provide funds, and to perform needed services, to assist children with physical, mental, or emotional needs in Monterey County. Our mission is to provide the tools and support needed so they can thrive in their living and learning environments.” We are so very thankful to be aligned with them in this journey. Our committees are formed entirely of volunteers, therefore 100% of all the fundraising dollars go directly towards making Tatum’s Garden a reality. We have also chosen to work with Leathers and Associates, a playground design firm based on the East Coast. They specialize in all-inclusive custom-designed, community-built playgrounds, and in the last 40 years, have built over 3,000 playgrounds all over the US and in seven foreign countries. They have created a truly one-of-a-kind playground design for us, with the help of over 2,500 Salinas schoolchildren who shared their drawings and brainstormed ideas reflecting the rich agricultural heritage of the Salinas Valley. Tatum’s Garden will be a virtual vegetable patch! We will watch children play on amazing features built to look like the produce grown here year round. Together, our goal is to build a unique 20,000 square foot playground in Salinas, CA. Preliminary plans call for an agriculturally-themed playground that will be constructed entirely of green materials—95% post-consumer recycled plastic. The playground will be built by hundreds of volunteers from the community in September 2013. Building the playground with free volunteer labor will save over 25% of the cost compared to a manufactured, installed playground.

This means every dollar will buy much more fun for the children of our community and all those who visit the playground! The total budget for the playground, restoration of increased accessible parking, restroom facilities, picnic areas and landscaping is approximately $1,000,000…and we need the assistance of major corporate and personal sponsors to complete our funding needs and make this dream a reality! Community-built projects inspire everyone who participates with a sense of ownership, so much so that they become a focus of community life. People describe them as the experience of a lifetime. Families who help build will return for picnics and bring out-of-town guests to show them what the community accomplished together. We envision Tatum’s Garden being a regional attraction—especially because there is nothing like it for miles around. We realize we will attract families with children of all abilities, who will in turn contribute to our local economy. We are looking for sponsorship, not a handout! When we offer you the opportunity to be a sponsor of our project, we are offering more than a place to hang your corporate logo. We will work with you to fully maximize all the community goodwill such a project can generate. Every press release, every interview, and every event is another opportunity for us to show our sincere gratitude to those who are willing to help us make this dream come true. Unlike newsprint ads or special events that last a day, your contribution will be immortalized on our donor wall—giving your family or business a lifetime of recognition for your generosity. We’ve prepared a complete sponsorship package that includes a list of suggested donation amounts and various ways in which we can provide recognition. However, you are encouraged to tailor donation amounts and recognition levels to your own needs. Be creative: Tell us how we can best fulfill your needs and earn your sponsorship! Please join us and plant seeds in Tatum’s Garden for the children of Salinas. With Hope, The Tatum’s Garden Committee

Tatum’s Garden Quick Fact Sheet The Need for Inclusive, Accessible Play ·Play is a child’s work…children learn, grow and develop through play, improving their physical, cognitive and social skills. Nowhere is this more evident than the neighborhood playground. Children with special needs may benefit to a greater degree from playground activities, since their disabilities may have kept them from developing the social and physical skills often learned in informal environments. ·Over 6,800 of the 69,000 children in Monterey County’s public schools (nearly 10%) have an ADA-recognized disability. This number does not include children enrolled in the private sector, or those who are under kindergarten-age. The Project ·Tatum’s Garden will be Monterey County’s first fully-inclusive and accessible playground. ·It will be built entirely by donated funds, in-kind contributions and volunteer labor. ·The playground will be a fun place for all to enjoy, centrally located in Sherwood Park in Salinas, at the corner of Bernal and Maryal. ·Tatum’s Garden will be a virtual vegetable garden, with the playground theme and structures reflecting the rich agricultural heritage of the Salinas Valley, and will also include cooperative games, accessible outdoor music areas, accommodations for children with visual and auditory impairments, and sensory panels and handrails designed to include those children who may have a disability but are not confined to a wheelchair. ·The playground will require minimal upkeep: it will be built from durable recycled plastics and composite lumber, and will include a poured-in-place rubber surfacing. ·Local artists and craftspeople will be invited to participate, making it a bright and visually beautiful place, and adding a unique Salinas Valley feel to the playground. Who will it benefit? ·Children of all ages, with and without disabilities. ·Families. ·Parents and grandparents who have limited mobility or other disabilities. ·It will be a long-lasting gift to the City of Salinas, for generations of children and families to enjoy. Because the playground will be built almost entirely with volunteer labor, its actual completed value to the City will be 2-3 times its cost. Tatum’s Garden will be a regional attraction, and draw in dozens of families a day, especially those from out of town who will support local businesses. The Process ·Design Day – May 9-10, 2013. Professional playground designers from Leathers and Associates met with over 2,500 local schoolchildren in 7 different schools to gather ideas for the new playground. They incorporated those ideas and drawings into the unique design of Tatum’s Garden. The public Design Unveiling Celebration took place on Friday evening May 10th, in the Rodeo Room at the Salinas California Rodeo Grounds, which was packed to capacity with supporters. There was so much excitement at the reveal, over $25,000 was raised that night! ·Organization Phase – Following the Design Unveiling, fundraising efforts have begun in full force. There are many opportunities for people to get involved, from corporate sponsorships to “buying” playground components, to personalizing fence pickets and paving bricks that will surround the playground. Every dollar will count, and it will truly

take a community effort! In this phase, the focus will also be to generate public awareness through the website and Facebook, and to begin to register the hundreds of volunteers needed to help build. ·Build Week – September 10-15th, 2013 (following Pre-Build Days Sept 6-8). Professional consultants will work on-site with a small army of enthusiastic volunteers of various skill levels to transform an empty, abandoned parking lot into something incredible—our own community-designed, community-funded and community-built playground! There will be childcare and meals on-site (more donation opportunities!) for those who come out and lend a hand, to build this amazing new destination playground in one week! ·Tatum’s Garden is fiscally sponsored by the Salinas Circle for Children, a local 501c3. All contributions to the playground project are tax-deductible, and can be made through the website at www.tatumsgarden.org, or by sending checks made out to “Salinas Circle for Children for Tatum’s Garden” and mailed to Tatum’s Garden, P.O. Box 3493, Salinas, CA 93912.

SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

“The addition of this inclusive playground puts Salinas on the map as a destination for both locals and travelers. The immediate and positive community response and support for the Bakker family’s outstanding plan is proof that together, we can achieve the dreams of all the children and parents in our city for a safe and accessible park. One of the best things about being Mayor of Salinas is the opportunity to participate as Tatum’s Garden grows and becomes a permanent fixture in our history. Please join me in supporting this worthy project.” – Joseph Gunter, Mayor of Salinas

Tatum's Garden will give ALL children an opportunity to feel "normal" and also, to teach compassion, caring and acceptance.” –Connie Rossi-Rains, Principal at Lincoln Elementary
