Tauranga Girls’ College Newsletter Message from the Principal When the stars come out to play, way that we ‘showcase’ they also come to Tauranga Girls’ College! By the time you read this newsletter, the College will have welcomed and hosted the National Japanese U18 Rugby 7s team and on Friday members of our very own NZ Black Ferns will drop in to support our TGC Rugby Squad. We also host Rotorua Girls’ High School for our annual sports exchange. If sport isn't your passion, then the sold out performances of our Kapa Haka Roopu take place next week and the Music concert in the Hall is about to be advertised. We have several students entered in Pin’d, the Year 11 and 12 Drama classes performed to a packed audience and on Monday 13 August at Baycourt Theatre we have our Staged NZ (the replacement to Stage Challenge) crew competing using the story of 'Wairaka' (the carving you see at the front of the school). There is no doubt that this College ensures there are opportunities for everyone to succeed BOTH in and out of the classroom. We value the diversity of talent we have within our school. Our College’s Open Night is one

our talent and our curriculum. I look forward to welcoming our new parents and students to Tauranga Girls’ College. Welcome and farewell I welcome Ms Donaldson to the Technology Learning Area. Ms Donaldson has been commuting over to Matamata for the last 15 years to teach Hospitality and Food Technology at Matamata College. She says, “for me, this appointment is an exciting opportunity to work in the community in which I live. Preparing and cooking meals from scratch is a skill that is steadily on the decline in New Zealand. Consequently, it gives me so much pleasure to provide opportunities to help students gain confidence and become proficient in cookery skills, so they can choose not to always be reliant on pre-prepared and overly processed meals.” Later this term, we take the opportunity to thank and farewell Ms Sheena Millar. Ms Millar has been the College’s Senior Deputy Principal and has deservedly won the role of Principal at Onslow College in Wellington. She will leave in

Week 9 of this term. Congratulations Ms Millar. Mr Robin Carr is also leaving. Robin has been the College Property Manager for over 20 years and has ensured that our school has been well maintained and cared for over that time. He has seen a lot of change during that period and knows all the ins and outs of our College like no other. Mr Carr is retiring to sunny Gisborne at the end of this month Our College Values Respect, Participation and Pride are pivotal to who we are. It is essential that all staff and students model our values whether that be on the way to school, in class or when representing us. It is therefore timely to remind students that eating and drinking in science labs is not permitted. There are some obvious health and safety reasons for this. This is also true in other classes with machinery or special equipment. Please be respectful of this.

My canvas involves a now extinct Huia bird and a stoat. My theme, for my art board, is on the extinction of New Zealand native birds. I am using several techniques from different artist models to create this artwork. Pierre Bonnard uses textured strokes of the paintbrush with sunset colours, I have used his technique in the background of this painting. Joanna Braithwaite uses realistic looking animals but adds humour by juxtaposition. This is more clear in my other paintings, but in this one, the stoat is looking up at the bird with its mouth open showing that it is hungry for the bird and that it is involved in the birds “melting” and its extinction. The last artist model I used is Alex Pardee. I liked his dripping effect on his paintings so I used that technique to look like the bird is melting away. I also had inspiration from Damien Hirst, who cuts real animals in half for museum displays, (kind of gruesome). I sort of replicated this by “cutting” the head off the bird and showing the skeleton underneath. This shows how the bird is melting away, leaving the skeleton behind. I have used a stoat, as one of the reasons for the bird’s extinct is the introduction of predators like a stoat.

Celebrating 60 years at our Diamond Jubilee 60th Reunion Tauranga Girls’ College has a proud history of providing a wide range of opportunities and learning pathways for our students to thrive and succeed, within and beyond the classroom. Established in 1958, our college will be celebrating its 60th Anniversary with a Diamond Jubilee, to be held over Labour Weekend (Friday 19 and Saturday 20 October, 2018). The celebration will commence with an informal ‘Chatter and Platter’ evening on Friday night, while Saturday’s activities will be more structured, showcasing past and present successes of our students. In keeping with our school’s philosophy of ‘empowering tomorrow’s women’, as one of our events, we are planning to showcase our ‘Sixtieth Summit’ on Saturday 20 October, featuring high profile, successful women. Our aim is to attract guest speakers - as ‘Wahine Toa: Aspirational Agents of Change’ - from a diverse range of fields and backgrounds. We would like them to share their inspirational and motivational stories with our community audience, so that in turn, with the support of their families and our community, this encourages our young women to reach their potential. The organising committee is excited about creating an event which is more than just an opportunity for past pupils and staff to reconnect and reminisce. The Summit will provide an innovative twist to our celebrations and will be open to the general public to attend. Whether they went to TGC or not, this event is designed to inform and entertain! If you would like to be a sponsor involved with our Diamond Jubilee 60th Reunion, please e-mail your details to Ewan McLeod, our Reunion Event and Communication Manager at 60thReunion@tgc.school.nz. If you would like to pre-register, you can go to our website:www.tgc.school.nz- and on the home page's top right hand tab there is a link to the pre-registration form.

Quiz Night

An exhilarating quiz left TGC with $12,500 for numerous sporting, cultural, academic and pastoral trips. This year 33 tables were sold to 268 individual participants. The Stig (an anonymous genius) was on sale each round to grant a team correct answers for the round. Rob Pinny with Realycom won several of 'The Stig' auctions however their buying power could not beat the brains behind the ITed team who eventually claimed the 2018 Quiz Night Championship prize (8 bottles of the prestigious Bird Manu labelled wine) It was a great night with some tricky questions. We would like to thank all those in the TGC Community, parents, teachers and friends who opened up their wallets to help our girls. Also a very big thank you to all the staff and student ambassadors involved with the organisation and the running of the night. Lastly a very big thank you to all our amazing sponsors for making the night possible. MASH UP, University of Auckland In the first week of the school holidays, three TGC students attended the MASH program through the Whakapiki Ake program. It involved them staying on campus at the University of Auckland in the marae, Waipapa. That week, they explored professions in Health, focusing on its affects on our Māori and Pasifika people. The girls said they were lucky to have been taken through the Auckland Hospital and to have taken part in workshops in the labs on campus. It was eye opening staying with Māori students currently studying towards becoming doctors, pharmacists, and scientists etc and being able to talk to them about university life. Maioha Haimona-Ngawherau, Akuira Haimona-Ngawherau,and Tangiwaiora Cook said that 'without a doubt we built strong relationships with other students from around the motu who were also interested in going into Health Science, and we left with motivation to work harder back in class at school and strive for excellence.
