TAURANGA GIRLS’ COLLEGE
13 December 2018
Message from the Principal It’s time to have a brain break but that’s different to a break from learning I remember my niece saying that morning tea breaks were called ‘brain breaks’ at her then primary school in Wellington. I thought it was quite a good concept really but different to a break from learning. At morning tea time, there was the opportunity to socialise, meet new friends, be a part of a club, go to sports team gatherings, to volunteer for something… all of these were learning opportunities but a brain break was associated with the subject curriculum. The point of saying this, is that the year has come to an end and whilst learning in the classroom as we know it has come to a close, opportunities to volunteer and give service, take up a little job, help others and so on, continue. These are all opportunities to learn and to grow our minds. So, enjoy the break from the classroom but embrace the opportunity to learn. Service and Leadership Congratulations to our Head stu-
dents for 2019. Seven Head students including our Head Girl Maioha Haimona-Ngawharau and her six Deputies were named at our final school assembly last week. Each of these students along with the prefect team will form a new student leadership collaboration for 2019. The usual sports, arts and executive council will cease to exist and new collaborations and teams will be formed under the 6 Deputy Head Girl responsibilities. These teams will enable student voice and collaboration to occur. All leaders are expected to undertake service duties for the benefit of all students. Ehara taku toa, he takitahi, he toa takitini My success should not be bestowed onto me alone, as it was not individual success but success of a collective I take this opportunity to thank everyone both in and outside of the Tauranga Girls’ College community for your support of me in my first year as Principal of this College. It has been both an exciting and challenging journey. I have been very fortunate to lead
a school in which there are many many, talented young women and dedicated and enthusiastic colleagues and a commitment from our Board of Trustees so ably led by Mrs Megan Cleverly. We have a sizeable increase in our Year 9 intake and the appointment of additional staff makes the 2019 journey one to be super enthused by. Wishing your all a safe, school holiday season Whatever it is that you and your whaanau do over the Christmas and New Year period, I trust that you will all be safe, happy and well. The school office closes on December the 18 and re-opens on Monday 21 January. On behalf of all of us at the College, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas/Meri Kirihemete and a Happy New Year.
