Positive Behaviour for Learning School Holidays - creating lasting memories with fun family challenges by Karen Boyes School holidays are upon us yet again and as a parent you may either dread or love the thought of having your children at home. Holidays are a chance for children to relax, kick back, families to connect and make memories. The no technology challenge: 3 days - yes three whole days with no technology - no phones, no computers, no TV! Out comes the board games, the make and do, their bikes, books etc and best of all they start to develop the very important life skill of creativity. While children are hooked into screens, the creativity muscle of the brain does not get a workout as images and ideas are supplied. Having nothing to do and being bored is an ideal time for the brain to think, create and imagine. Create a space for this warn your children which days it will be. Keep to your word and leave them to their own resources. Resist filling in the time for them, unless you are playing with them. Note: Give them a few days’ notice of this event, as then it is easier to remove the phones, remotes and chargers while they are asleep. Then they wake up fresh, with no access to technology. Let the fun begin! The Knuckle Bones (Jacks) Challenge: Each night after dinner, play this game. Googled the rules.
The Gratitude Challenge: Put a huge piece of blank chart paper to the wall in the kitchen. Each day, after dinner, write 3 things we were grateful for that day. Every person who visits can also add their thoughts during that 2 week period. After 2 weeks talk about how grateful we are as a family and the impact on this in our lives. The Bucket List Challenge: Create a book of notes and a poster of our bucket list. Go through each day looking at one aspect of our future and what we would like to be, do or have. The categories were: B = Buy that something special U = Ultimate Challenge C = Conquer a fear K = Kind Acts of Others E = Express Yourself - Talk about the words that define us eg: inspiring, passionate T = Travel Adventures L = Leave a legacy I = Idiotic Stuff S = Satisfy a Curiosity T = Take Lessons Brainstorm these in a random order each night and at the end create a poster with photos, pictures and words. For step by step ideas, please see Karen Boyes’ blog Our Family Bucket Lists. The clean your room challenge: Clean your room, to my standard in less than an hour and I’ll buy you …………….! Simple, fun and the rooms actually get tidy – including dusting, vacuuming and clearing out the clutter. While they may moan and complain throughout, let them put on their favourite music (loud) constantly give the countdown - “40 minutes to go”,
4
20 minutes to go”, “5 minutes to go.” It is fun and effective.
Special Assessment Conditions for the NCEA exams 2017 You can apply for Special Assessment Conditions for the NCEA exams if; your daughter has a sensory, physical, medical and or learning difficulty that affects the assessment of their classroom learning, and might be able to overcome or reduced with appropriate assistance. New applications opened on 01 October 2016 for the 2017 school year. The deadline for new applications closes for Special Assessment Conditions for 2017 in midFebruary.
What are Special Assessment Conditions? Special Assessment Conditions (SAC) provide extra help for approved students when they are being assessed for their NCEA so that barriers to achievement can be removed and they can have a fair opportunity to achieve credits. The support is used for internal standards and external standards (exams). Examples of SAC are use of a writer or a computer, extra time, braille or enlarged papers, or a reader.
How is an applications made for Special Assessment Conditions? Your daughter will need to complete a student application for entitlement to SAC form. These are available from the Deputy Principal in charge of NCEA, Ms Rowlands or from the NZQA website. The application will need to be supported by a report written by a registered professional, certifying the medical condition and or learning disability and making recommendations for the assessment of learning (SAC). The report must have been completed within the last three years.
TAURANGA GIRLS’ COLLEGE
DECEMBER 2016
What happens then? The school applies online through a very secure portal providing data and other information showing the need for the SAC requested. Applications close in mid-February 2017. NZQA assessors may approve or amend or decline all or any of the SACs requested for your child on the basis of the information provided. Approval means that they are entitled to use the SCA for internal and external assessment (exams) for that year. Junior Students requiring literacy and numeracy pack of work for the holidays, parents are to contact Ms Mordue in the Learning Centre.
Who to contact at school If you think your daughter may be eligible for SACs contact one of the following people; Glenda Rowlands: Deputy Principal in charge of NZQA The year level Dean Mrs Mordue: SENCO
Quiz Night A great big thank you! to all our generous sponsors of the Tauranga Girls’ College “super heroes” Quiz night. With your sponsorship the night was a super success. We were able to raise over $10 000 in support of our Cultural, Pastoral, Academic and Sporting groups within the school. Once again thank you so much. And to all the other 300 or so people who bought a ticket or helped out on the night also a great big thank you for your support of the event, and ultimately the girls of Tauranga Girls’ College who will be the benefactors of the night.
