Opening of the Eco classroom The Environmental Committee have had a very successful year ending, with the arrival of our long awaited Eco classroom. On November 24. we were privileged to have the Right Honourable Simon Bridges and other distinguished guests, attend a preliminary opening to acknowledge those who have been supporting the project over the past four years. This undertaking has been a labour of love with all time and energy spent, gifted for free! We have named our space ‘Manaaki Whenua – Enviro Hub,’ which translated means ‘caring for the land.’ The ethos behind Manaaki Whenua is to give back, restore, nurture and sustain our life force. As an environmental committee, it is our mission to foster an ecofriendly mind-set at Tauranga Girls’ College, as well as with in the local community. This classroom is a living thing that will grow and evolve over time as new committees add their input. Its primary goal is to teach eco-friendly ideologies using this bookable space for everyone to enjoy.

Filming with TV2
Year 9 and 10 Activities Days 5th and 6th December.
On Sunday the 5th of November, five Film & Media Production students volunteered as production assistants for the TV2 “What Now Live Show” at Papamoa Beach. It was a great experience and heaps of fun gaining an understanding of how live TV is filmed. The girls had a 6:30am start for the live broadcast attracting well over 500 members of the public and 2 hours of television from 8.00am. They were involved with a full afternoon rehearsal the day before to prepare for; crowd control, prize giveaways, aiding in live segments, assisting crew, setting up technical gear and props, as well as many other jobs.
2 great days were had by our Junior students. Some travelling far afield on Luge trips, Wingspan, Adrenalin Forest and Hamilton Zoo. Closer to home we had the Waimarino, Historic Village and Environmental Challenge. We would like to thank Burger King Fraser Cove, Macdonalds and the Green grocer Gate Pa for sponsoring our students. Your generosity is very much appreciated

School Holidays Creating lasting memories with fun family challenges by Karen Boyes School holidays are upon us yet again and as a parent you may either dread or love the thought of having your children at home. Holidays are a chance for children to relax, kick back, families to connect and make memories.
The no technology challenge: 3 days – yes, three whole days with no technology – no phones, no computers, no TV!. Out comes the board games, the make and do, their bikes, books, etc and best of all they start to develop the very important life skill of creativity. While children are hooked into screens, the creativity muscle of the brain does not get a workout as images and ideas are supplied. Having nothing to do and being bored is an ideal time for the brain to think, create and imagine. Create a space for this – warn your children which days it will be, keep to your word and leave them to their own resources. Resist filling in the time for them, unless you are playing with them. Give them a few days’ notice of this event as then it is easier to remove the phones, remotes and chargers while they are asleep. Then they wake up fresh, with no access to technology. Let the fun begin! The Knuckle Bones (Jacks) Challenge: Each night after dinner, play this game. Google the rules.
The Gratitude Challenge: Put a huge piece of blank chart paper on the wall in the kitchen or on the fridge. Each day, after dinner, get your children to write 3 things they are grateful for that day. As a parent, you do the same. Every person who visits can also add his/her thoughts during that 2 week period. After 2 weeks, as a family, look at the list and talk about the impact of having a positive attitude – think positive, feel positive
The Bucket List Challenge: Create a book of notes or a poster of our bucket list. Go through each day, looking at one aspect of our future and what we would like to be, do or have. The categories can be: B = Buy that something special U = Ultimate Challenge C = Conquer a fear K = Kind Acts of Others E = Express Yourself – Talk about the words that define us eg: inspiring, passionate T = Travel Adventures L = Leave a legacy I = Idiotic Stuff S = Satisfy a Curiosity T = Take Lessons
The clean your room challenge: Clean your room, to my standard in less than an hour and I’ll buy you ……………. Or we will go to ………………! Simple, fun and the rooms actually get tidy – including dusting, vacuuming and clearing out the clutter. While they may moan and complain throughout, let them put on their favourite music (loud) and constantly give the countdown – “40 minutes to go”, 20 minutes to go”, “5 minutes to go.” It is fun and effective.
