Achievements International and National: Cross Country: At the New Zealand Secondary Schools National Cross Country Championships held near the Agrodome in Rotorua Tauranga Girls’ College had a team of 15 athletes competing. There were over 1000 athletes competing on Saturday from 125 different schools across the country.

Congratulations to our Senior Girls team who came away with a silver medal in the 6 person team event. These girls were: Arleah Tippins, Kaylee Mudgway, Tylah Amrein, Paris Heslop, Jaysha Tippins and Sophie McConnell.

At the inaugural National Cross Country Regional Relay Champs athletes were selected for the Waikato/BOP team based on their placing at Waikato’s.

Kaylee Mudgway and Arleah Tippins were both in the Waikato/BOP senior girls’ team that were placed 4th.

Well done to all the girls that took part; those girls above as well as Hannah Rose, Ellie Richardson, Tabitha Marshall, Crystal Aranui, Abigail Mortimer, Kalais Going, Breana Allum, Erin Conway, and Emily Kneale.

Shooting: Georgi Jovner won the A Grade at the Howick Open Shooting Competition and top scored for the Waikato Team at the Teams of Ten competition in Lower Hutt.

On Friday 17 June 18 Tauranga Girls’ College girls represented at BOP Secondary School Squash Teams competition. Taylor Clarke, Anika Russell, Ashlee Linn, Div 1, 2nd place, Silver medals. Emily Chamberlain, Alyssa Lewitt, Morgan Amos, Div 2, 4th place. Olivia McMann, Zoe Lankshear, Natasha Davies, Div 3, 1st place. Cate Belton, Jada Hine, Yvonne Ryan, Div 3, 2nd place. Anneliese Darby, YuWen Huang, Sophie Bailey, Div 3, 3rd place.

The Tauranga Girls’ College Rugby 1st XV team won the first round of the competition winning all 4 games scoring, 305 points and only 12 against them.

Taekwondo: Brooklyn Storey competed and trained in Australia as part of her build up to compete at the Junior Worlds in November.

Underwater Hockey: The Senior Underwater Hockey team placed 4th at Regionals which qualifies them to compete at Nationals in Winter Tournament week.

The Junior Underwater Hockey team placed 5th at their regionals and have been invited to attend the National Tournament. Most Valuable Player announced for the senior team was Jordan Ross and for the Junior Team was Keelin McKelvie.

Cross Country: At the Waikato Cross Country Championships held in Rotorua in the Intermediate division Arleah Tippins placed 2nd and the 3 person team of Arleah Tippins, Tabitha Marshall and Abigail Mortimer placed 3rd in the 6 person team of the 3 above plus Sapphire Paton, Emily Kneale and Breana Allum placed 2nd. In the Senior division Kaylee Mudgway placed 3rd and the 3 person team of Kaylee Mudgway, Tylah Amrein and Paris Heslop placed 1st.

Kaylee Mudgway placed 6th in the Tauranga Open Cross Country.

Junior Interschool Debating:

YuWen Huang, Courtney Thomas, *Gabrielle Dackers beat Tauranga Boys’ College 1. *Best speakers in each debate.

Tauranga Girls’ College have a new sports uniform that will provide much needed unity across all codes. This will mean that our teams can be clearly identified as Tauranga Girls’ College sports’ teams. We also have a new sports’ hoodie that students can purchase for additional team apparel. If any team wishes to have additional team apparel it must have school approval and be purchased by Tauranga Girls’ College.

International: TGC/TBC MasterChef 2016 Tuesday 31 May, 4-8pm.

Event timeline: 4pm- Boys arrive - briefing on event and safety, split in to 14 groups of 6-7.

4:15- Move to cooking rooms, decide on one of two recipes, prepared in advance by team captains.

4:30- Two students per group head to New World to purchase ingredients.

Remaining members created a restaurant poster.

5pm-Cooking!

6:30- One small dish per group plated to be judged, rest of main taken to International Centre for buffet style dinner. Students ate dinner and dessert (supplied) inside and outside of International Centre.

7:30- Prizegiving- certificates, chocolates, and trophies st nd rd awarded to 1 , 2 , 3 place, Most Creative Dish, and Best Restaurant Poster.

8:10pm- Students picked up by homestay families.

The evening was a huge successthe students, in particular TGC girls really impressed us with their team efforts, great organisation and overall spirit.

The dishes created were of a very high standard, both in taste and presentation. TGC team captains were particularly well organised, having prepared two recipes in advance, and did a great job of keeping their team on task. The success of the night really was a credit to our girls.

International girls’ volunteer activities on Work Day On Work Day the girls from the International Department spent the day volunteering at a number of local organisations.

All 46 were involved, whether they were supplying home baking and spending time with clients at Alzheimer’s Tauranga, sorting clothes and linen at the Waipuna Hospice depot, assembling client packs at the Stroke Foundation or cleaning cat cages at the SPCA. A number of girls went to Gate Pa School and joined classes, interacting with the children and teaching them about their home countries.

All the organisations where our girls volunteered gave very positive feedback and said they would love to have them back.

Chemistry On Wednesday 17 June, Bayley Coster, Emma Godden, Jada Mataroa and Grace Wright travelled to Waikato University for the Hill Laboratories Analytical Chemistry competition. There were 24 teams of 4 competing from Pukekohe High School in the north to Taupo-nui-a-tia in the south. The students had to accurately determine the composition of a barium chloride compound, using gravimetric and volumetric techniques. The winner would be the team that got closest to the actual answer. Hamilton Boys’ High (1) were the winners for the 4th year running with 2.19 as their answer. Our team placed second with 2.25 – so close! This is the best result we have had for the past 3 years (previously gaining 5th then last year 3rd). The team had a great day, topped off by coming second and winning a small, but welcome monetary prize!

Asia Wise competition Tauranga Girls’ College is a school that gives emphasis to our students being ‘Asia Aware’ as the importance of Asia is an increasing reality for New Zealanders. Asia Wise is an annual competition held throughout Australia and New Zealand, around the history and geography of Asia. Last year students at Tauranga Girls’ College had great success with highest results in Australasia.

Abigail Mortimer and Amy Earles attained 98% to top the Years 8-9 competition. This year both have proceeded to attain with distinction in the Years 10-

11 competition, Abigail having the highest score of 96% and Amy’s 94% being 2nd equal with some Australian students.

Other students who attained at distinction were Annaliese Darby, Ella Westenberg, Hannah Cox, Hayley Tanner, Hayley Ellison, Laura Degas, Lucy Paterson, Sophie Bailey, Eloise Sharpe, Dannika Worthington, and Amber Tarr who all got 90-92%.

Positive Behaviour for Learning Being able to Accept Difference is important at Tauranga Girls’ College as it ensures emotional safety for all students and staff.

As individuals, we need to value others as much as ourselves.

We are all different and it is important for our young people to learn that being different is what makes them unique. They should also learn to embrace others’ differences.

When children are young, they will often ask about differences they notice between themselves and others. However, they tend to accept others without question. They make friends with those who may not even speak their language; the language of play is enough for them to have a relationship.

As children get older, the attitudes their parents have of others may determine their behaviour towards those who are different. How the family perceives those who are different may have a big impact on the way the growing child treat others. Children learn to value difference from their parents.

As parents or caregivers, we could reflect on our own acceptance of difference and how tolerant we are of the points of view of other people.

We can also reflect on how flexible we are in accommodating different customs, beliefs and cultural traditions and, how much we respect and value individuality.

We can promote acceptance by:  Helping our child to understand our own whakapapa, family history and background.  Talking with our child about the ways in which people within our own family are different from each other they each have their own likes and dislikes, interests, and things that they are good at.  Encouraging our child to talk about their observations, questions or concerns.  Helping our child to consider the feelings and opinions of others - to put him or herself in the other person's shoes.  Helping our children see that differences are to be appreciated and celebrated.

We can do this by exposing them to other cultures and people through watching television programmes or reading books about other people and places and participating in local community cultural events and festivals.

As C. JoyBell C. states, “We are all equal in the fact that we are all different. We are all the same in the fact that we will never be the same.” Let us all celebrate differences!

Stage Challenge This year’s Tauranga Girls’ College Stage Challenge theme was 'Sacred Journey' I am strength, I am beauty, I am fertility.

Sacred Journey follows the process of the traditional Maori chin tattoo - Tamoko from a women's perspective. It represents strength, beauty, fertility and the empowerment of a woman. The performance aimed to show the detailed process and the respect and beauty of this special art form - the Tamoko.

Year 13 Ball

Dance Competition

Our Year 13 ball was held on Saturday 28 May at Classic Flyers Aviation Museum. The theme for this year was ‘Wanderlust’ - the strong desire to travel. It was a wonderful evening and a special occasion for our Year 13 students, their partners, and teachers.

Our Hip Hop group, The Undertakers, competed in the Project Hip Hop competitions at Bethlehem College. The group were placed 4th out of a large group of 11 crews and did very well and against some stiff competition. For a first time out we look forward to seeing this group grow in strength as the year goes on. Congratulations to the students: Zoe Beck, Hana Ito, Bethany Lewer, Jaida Ormsby, Madison Randall, Grace Redwood, Hannah Sadd, Annika Sinclair, Erica Wilson-Innes, and Tai Hemana.

NZ School Japanese Trivia Championships We took 3 teams of students to this event in Hamilton on Friday night. Please congratulate Min Kyung Kim and Myosung Gwak on gaining 2nd place equal at the BOP/Waikato New Zealand Schools Japanese Trivia Championships on Friday night at the University of Waikato. This was a very wellrun event which was live throughout New Zealand via a Google spreadsheet so we could see the results from other regions come in simultaneously.

A great application of Google and transferable to any subject.

Enrolments 2017 Enrolments will open for the year 2017 the first week of Term 3, 2015, and all contributing schools will receive their enrolment packs during that week.

Applications for enrolment will close on Friday 02 September.

All students living within the enrolment zone for the college have automatic right of entry.

Out of zone students are also being accepted and enrolment packs for those students are available through the school reception. The closing date is also Friday 02 September.

If you have friends outside the Tauranga Girls’ College zone who wish to send their daughters to our school please draw their attention to the way in which enrolment packs can be accessed.

Should too many applications from out of zone be received, ballot date for Tauranga Girls’ College is Monday 12 September.

NCEA Candidate Information

In Term 3 your daughter will be choosing the subjects that she wishes to study next year. It is very important that she makes choices that are well informed and based on her ability and achievement in the subjects that she has taken this year.

These will be held in J Block on Thursday 28 July, 4.30-7pm.

All senior students have been issued with the NZQA candidate information sheet along with a printout of the standards they will be assessed against for 2016.

It is important that this information has been checked carefully and any alterations are sent to the student office.

The table shows the fee structure for National Qualification entries for 2016.

The government provides financial assistance to students entering for school qualifications if certain criteria are met.

During this subject choice time the Careers Advisor, the deans and senior leaders will be visiting classes to discuss subject choices and to go through the Curriculum Guide for subject choice, which your daughter will receive at the beginning of Term 3.

A useful first step in planning courses is for your daughter to have completed the course planning exercise starting on page 4 of the Curriculum Guide, which will take her through to career and education choices beyond school.

PTA The PTA Fashion Show was a huge success, making about $9000 in its 30th year! It’s still relevant, the girls (and boys) love it, and it’s a great way to involve the local community and businesses in the school. It was organised this year by a very small team of working mums, with limited experience of the show, but with great support from Carolyn Nemeth, the senior managers, the caretakers, Ewan McLeod, Chris Ferguson and the amazing ‘techy’ girls, our stage manager and the back stage and front of house girls.

Thanks also go to the lovely Shop Mums, who co-ordinated the groups and made sure everyone looked after the clothes! A huge thanks to our long-standing sponsor, Legacy Trust, who kicked off our planning this year with a fantastic donation of $500. And of course, thank you to all who came to see the shows!

However, it’s important to acknowledge the PTA mums who gave huge amounts of their time and energy: Caroline Banyard (the lion’s share of everything - shops, groups, rehearsals), Megan Pakes (all the business sponsorship in the Indulge newspaper feature, helped by Tina Gear), Liz Nicholls (sorting out the dosh and supporting 2 groups), Shonagh Harris (sponsorship, raffles and finding us a Creative Director - Julie Bourke from Heaven in Te Puna), Erin Robson (social media guru - thanks Megan! music vetting and sponsorship), Senga Evans-Best (rehearsals, promotion and publicity), and me (VIP stuff and bits and bobs).

We totally get how busy life is for everyone, but we are putting out a plea now for next year.....almost all of us will be helping with next year’s show, but we will need some more help. We have a neat structure for the Fashion Show Planning Group (and this year we all really enjoyed our ‘meetings’ at Bethlehem Coffee Club on Fridays at 4!). We will need help with the following roles/jobs: Overall Director: actually not a huge job, just keeping everyone else on task Promotion, posters and ticketing Groups Co-ordinator: meeting with the shop mums to advise what they need to do Logistics: lighting, stage, seating, carpet, security etc (all in conjunction with the school) Raffles VIP reception Sponsorship Shop liaison Please step forward. Our girls actually love it when we get involved, and it’s important to model ‘active citizenship’ and ‘hands-on’ volunteering.

Aquatics Aquatics is a half year course that happens in the first half of the year. It is an awesome course that allows students to work on their Swimming and Survival abilities, to participate in lots of outdoor activities such

as Kayaking, Stand up Paddle Boarding, and Waka Ama. Students can gain their PADI Dive Certificate, which is an internationally recognised diving qualification. To gain this outside of school costs a lot more money than to do it in this course.

Many of our international students enrol in this course so it is a great way for our students to share learning opportunities with other students from around the world. As a half year course the assessment work offers 13 credits: 7 level 3, 3 level2, and 3 level 1. The course is taken in conjunction with another half year course.

Ms Thomason is our staff member who presents this course. She is more than happy to be contacted about details of the course.

Young Enterprise The Tauranga Girls’ College Young Enterprise team ‘ProtechT who are entered in the Young Enterprise Scheme National competition have been working hard throughout the year to produce an innovative product – Wooly Gripz. ProtechT has created a padded crutch and walker handle cover which consists of two layers - one of neoprene foam to absorb the impact, and a top layer of natural sheepskin to prevent abrasion and blistering on the hands. The cost is only $24.95.

Attendance When a student is absent from school because of illness parents/caregivers are:  To phone the school office 578-8114 prior to 8.00 am and follow the answer-phone instructions or  Email a message to the office using the address: absences@tgc.school.nz  The student must bring a note to explain her absence on the first day of her return.

Students who cannot explain their absences will be marked as truant.  Parents writing notes for their daughters are asked to ensure that the following information is included: The student’s full name and tutor group and a legible (printed) version of the parent’s name as well as the parent’s signature, date and absence date.  This information ensures that notes are dealt with promptly and that parents can be contacted should any queries arise.  Where absence is known in advance the school should be phoned as far in advance as possible. Appointments for the dentist, doctor and other personal matters should be made outside school hours whenever possible.  Non-medical absences during school term time: Where students will be absent from school for other than medical reasons parents are required to request leave in writing/email

to the Principal giving the dates and reason for the absence.  Students who achieve 100% attendance are awarded certificates. Employers value such evidence of commitment from young people.

After school detentions may be given to students who have a whole day’s absence without explanation. Notice of this will be given to parents, and students will need to be collected at 4.30 pm after completion of the detention.

Punctuality All students are expected to be in their Tutor Class by 8.40 am.

Student Parking Students choosing to bring cars to College are to find their own parking spaces outside of the college campus. Students are not to park on the grass verges outside the College bus bay (22rd Avenue). This land is council land, not owned by the Ministry of Education. Students’ parking on the grass verge is a health and safety risk. Students’ cars may towed away at their expense, by the Tauranga City Council, if they continue parking in areas that cause a safety risk and are parked illegally.

Parking is provided for staff only. Families dropping students off, are to use the bus bay entrance, drop student off and then continue driving out of the exit area.
