Tauranga Girls’ College Pauline Cowens, Principal

Message from the Principal Dear Parents, Caregivers and Friends of the College As Term 2 draws to a close we can look back on a highly successful first half of the year, where we have all focussed on our values of respect, participation and pride through all the opportunities that students have taken up, exploring a huge range of experiences in and out of the classroom. The pages of this newsletter, Facebook and Twitter all provide a record of many of those experiences, as well as the successes and the service ethic that lies behind them and we congratulate all those involved. Participation, our second value has been very much a focus for June/July with our recent Workday producing its traditional large total of funds and a huge thank you must go to each and every student who has contributed to funding resources for learning for our

school community. This year’s money will be spent on a variety of things requested by students, including drink fountains, air conditioning and technology.

Participation of a different kind, in the creative arts, and the combined schools production of Peter Pan by talented students from both colleges gave us all some great entertainment in Week 9 of this term and congratulations to all concerned and to Tauranga Boys’ College for hosting this year’s event. With the successes of Stage Challenge a little earlier in the term our students have done very well. And as we look to the return of students into Term 3 we move into planning for 2018, with feedback on recent performance for junior student at our Junior Parent Teacher conferencing evening in the first week of term on Thursday 27 July, information at our

Open Evening for incoming Year 9 students in Week 3 on August 10 and on August 16 our Option Evening for the rest of the school, supporting students in planning learning pathways into 2018. In the meantime I wish you all a safe and relaxing holiday break and see you again for an equally busy and productive Term 3.

Staff L-R: Nicky Hodson, Jess Ruthe, Rowan Oswald, Rita Perigo, Mark Elliot, Murray Armstrong, Ewan McLeod, Philippa Ferguson, Anna Leach, Kate Mordue, Rose Wright, Pam Jones (absent Shirley Keno)

Social Science enables students to experience the high relevance of their studies with involvement in major events.

The Centenary of World War 1: A major initiative undertaken was on a ‘Field of Remembrance’ project which had significant media interest and coverage, along with our Gallipoli Centenary Remembrance Service. Our students made

a clean sweep in all the awards in the Regional WW100 Committee secondary school competitions, winning the entire $1,700 prize money. As a follow up to this we had a History trip to the WW1 battle sites in Belgium and France and just recently a Year 13 History student (Amanda Yang) has won the National Secondary School’s Passchendaele Competition with an all- expenses paid 3 week trip to Western Europe as a NZ Young Ambassador. $2,000 cash was also awarded with the Hon Simon Bridges coming to school to present her with the cheque.

Our students won both the regional junior and senior secondary school Pukehinahina Trust competitions. Outstanding work was recognised and published in magazines with a national readership such as the NZ Memories, the NZ Legacy and the Historical Review magazines. Curriculum Trip Opportunities in the Social Science Department We aim to immerse students in the events we study with trips customised around major topics taught. Recent years include international trips to: Russia, Poland and Germany (History 2015) “a trip of a lifetime”. France, Belgium, Greece and Italy (History and Classical Studies 2016) “a highlight of my years at school”.

Field Trips within New Zealand Field trips and Geography are synonymous with one another. We strongly promote our students getting out in variety of New Zealand environments: Mauao, Waitomo Caves, Tauranga Urban, Tuahu Track, South Island High Country and Tongariro National Park. These learning experiences encourage the girls to think critically and are extremely rewarding.

Planned trips within the next year:  Samoa (Tourism in October 2017)  United States of America (History for April 2018)

Experiencing the tourism industry is critical to our Tourism classes and being teenagers they love the adventure destinations. For Year 12, Rotorua Canopy Tours offer breath-taking zip lines and swingbridges through NZ native forests and a chance to learn more about eco-tourism. In year 13 the thrills of Waitoma Black water rafting is a highlight of the year.

Asia Wise The Social Science Department recognises the significance of New Zealanders becoming Asia Aware. The Asia Wise Challenge is an Australasian competition with over 5,000 entries annually, testing knowledge about Asian history, geography and economics. For the past 2 years our best students have attained the highest marks (98%) in all of Australasia, an incredible achievement. This year we had further high success with results at 96%.

“If you talk to a woman in a language she understands, that goes to her head. If you talk to her in her own language, that goes to her heart” ‒Nelson Mandela (adapted) “One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way” ‒Frank Smith “The limits of my language are the limits of my world” ‒Ludwig Wittgenstein

Exchange Opportunities There are exciting exchange opportunities available for those students wishing to spend time in other countries, improving their language skills and appreciating the culture of other countries first hand:

   

French-Speaking Switzerland (from Year 11) Germany/New Zealand (from Year 11) Japanese Scholarships- Kasaoka Scholarship (3 weeks), Kunei Scholarship (10 months) Let’s Homestay Exchanges, Individual exchanges to a Spanish speaking-country or to China.

Andraya Heyes, Year 13 10 Month Japan Exchange Scholarship 2016 “Spending ten months in Japan has greatly impacted my life. Suddenly I became aware of the sheer size and possibility this world holds as new opportunities opened up for me. Not only do you gain an eye opening perspective of the world, but you also form new relationships and open up future career ideas, pathways and opportunities. So my piece of advice is this: take a language and go on an exchange... because words will never do it justice.”

Paris Lynn Year 12 German Exchange At the end of 2016, I took part in German Exchange. Although my German was not very good at the time after one week, I understood more conversations and was managing to take part in everyday activities. I recommend the exchange to the students learning German as it is an experience which will stick with you forever. You will learn more than you think not just about the language but yourself.

...Exchange Opportunities Carlie Morreel Y13 Georgina Dewar, Grace Thomas, Teagan Wilson and I all took part in the Switzerland Exchange over the last Summer Holidays. We were each partnered up with a Swiss student, who we hosted in July/August last year. Following this, we made the journey over to Switzerland where we stayed with our host families for 7 weeks. During this time we were able to improve our French language skills, experience a new culture and way of living, experience a different way of schooling,

and experience a true winter. Each of us were faced with different opportunities, and I am very grateful for what I was able to do. I got to ice skate on a frozen lake, travel to Belgium, France, and Germany, I visited Christmas Markets, went to the luge, learnt to ski, went hiking in the mountains, experienced a snow storm, and went to the Creux Du Van. Each experience was new and exciting, and I was often pulled out of my comfort zone. At the end of our 7 week stay with our host families, we met up with all the other NZ students and made our way to Paris, where we spent our last week. This was a completely different experience in itself. We continued immersing ourselves in the French language, and made the most of our busy itinerary which included visiting the Eiffel Tower in daylight and at night, visiting the Arc De Triomphe, Notre Dame, Sacré Coeur, Champs Elysées, and went shopping! The whole exchange experience was incredible and we all learnt so much about the French language, about the Swiss culture, and about ourselves. It was amazing!

Assessment methodologies Transition from Year 8 to Year 9 Whanau Engagement Outside sector involvement CRRP (Culturally Responsive and Relational Pedagogy)

We have been visiting classes, doing observations and also gaining student voice in order to create our evidence based reports. This has helped us gain insight on where to for Term 3 for the Tauranga Peninsula CoL. The team has also been given the opportunity to present our School Profile to the Board of Trustees which was mutually beneficial. The Across school representatives also spoke about progress with Evidence based enquiries. If you have any queries about the work the CoL team are doing please feel free to contact the school so we can talk.
