Tauranga Girls’ College Newsletter Message from the Principal Performing Arts Just watching the dance moves has me needing to go to the osteopath or physio, but not so for a large number of students who attend the Colleges’ Dance class or dance outside of school, dance is definitely their thing and, they do it was passion and without medical intervention! I have had the pleasure of popping into the gyms’ dance room to watch hip hop and contemporary dance groups preparing for their respective competitions. It's quite the workout, commitment and students empowering their peers in yet another of the many performing arts here at the College. F Block renovations As I exit the gym, the aromas from the Food Technology classroom are fabulous and despite the construction going on with the roof of the building, staff and students are managing the learning and coping with the disruption as best as they can.
The Food and Fashion Block has been ‘under wraps‘ (construction speak) and is on track for its complete roofing renovation at the end of this term. I want to thank staff and students for their patience during this time. Welcome ITed J Block, the largest building in the College and home to about 18 learning spaces is home to a number of curriculum areas but also to our new IT company, ITed. ITed are a local IT company and support other Colleges in the Bay. Thanks to them, we have improved wifi and connectivity for learning and teaching. As the College continues with its 2018 BYOC (chromebook) but also supports BYOD (device), ITed is ensuring that the infrastructure enables these tools to be utilised by staff and students making access to knowledge quicker, the opportunity to collaborate easier and to have access to valuable classroom learning from home.
Have your say Speaking of ‘home’, TGC Community Consultation dates are now being advertised in this newsletter, on our website and in the press. I invite you to come and have your say on learning at TGC 2030. This is an exciting time for the College. All schools are reflective of their communities, so as a member of the Tauranga and WBOP community, please have your say by attending any one of the several consultation venues in the month of June. Uniform Update Speaking of change, I have asked the Board to consider an addition to our uniform - wearing trousers/pants in winter. Unlike co-ed schools, who already have trouser/pants as an option, we do not, so this is our starting point with our current uniform suppliers. Our student rep on the Board, Lily, is going to make this her project and I am very keen to support her and we are clearly supported by the Board of Trustees. I am passionate about
TAURANGA GIRLS’ COLLEGE
our brand and the wearing of our correct uniform, so I am keen to ensure that we investigate the options fully, explore styles and costs and then come back to the TGC community to have their say.

Aquatics Class
Our senior Aquatics class went to Waimarino on Thursday 31 May for a kayaking trip. We spent a couple of hours kayaking down Wairoa river, stopping along the way to have lunch, and to play some games and do some challenges. The weather was fantastic, so that made it easier for our girls to swing out into the river, and go down the water slide. We also got to hop in the spa and use the paddle boats. We all had such a lovely day. It’s hard to believe we were working towards an achievement standard at the same time! Ms Thomason is definitely a very lucky teacher to have such a great class.
Badminton On Monday 28 May, Ms Thomason took 16 of our junior girls to the QE11 to play in a Badminton tournament. This was to see if we could qualify for the Junior secondary school BOP champs. Although our girls played well, the competition was just too tough, and we didn’t make it through. All of our girls were superb sportswomen. It was great to see their skills improve as they progressed through this tournament.
The Snell Shoe Recently Pauline Cowens, former Principal, was interviewed about the ‘other’ Snell Shoe which is held at Tauranga Girls’ College. The right shoe, which Peter Snell was wearing when he won the 800 metres at the Rome Olympic Games is in Te Papa and was featured in Radio New Zealand's series Ours: Treasures from Te Papa. The left show was donated to Rotorua Girls’ High School and is used as the trophy for Rotorua/Tauranga Girls’ College Sports Exchange. The trophy is awarded over both summer and winter sports and has been held by Tauranga Girls’ College since 1989. Early Childhood placement During our recent Assessment Week the Year 12 Early Childhood Education students investigated the hygiene practices in an Early Childhood Centre for a morning or afternoon placement. The centres were a great support and the students enjoyed this opportunity to have a practical experience in the community.
On Sunday 03 June our Year 13 Physical Education students participated in the Mt Joggers and Walkers 10km run. This was the 32nd year that this event has been held. The girls have been training for this for just over ten weeks. Their results go towards two achievement standards, Physical Education 3.3 and 3.4. It was a fairly miserable day weather wise, however it was a very successful day results wise. All of our girls bar one, gained Achieved, many gained Merit, and at least three gained Excellence. Maddy Mear was the first TGC girl home. She ran a superb race, saving energy for a final burst around Mauao to finish in 6th place, with a time of 46.26 minutes. A big shout out to Miss Pollard. She has gained Excellence in this event for many years, and 2018 was no exception. Our girls are lucky to have her out there pacing this for them. Thank you to the organisers of this event. Along with the usual drink stations, bag check ins, and entry packs, our girls were entertained by drummers as they began the circuit of Mauao, and bagpipes as they neared the main beach. The overcast day and drizzle could not suppress the awesome atmosphere for the racers. Well done to all of our participants, including many past TGC students, and a variety of girls who do not take Physical Education as a subject. It is great to be a part of such a long standing community event. Joanna Thomason
Looking forward to University
University representatives visit schools to answer students’ questions and give information about courses. Recently James Agnew visited Tauranga Girls’ College from Lincoln University. Rebecca Rickard was one of the students who asked plenty of questions about enrolling, accommodation and scholarships as she intends to enrol at Lincoln in 2019. She will study towards a BAgSci. Future visits: Victoria University Otago University Canterbury University

Visit to Body World Vital Exhibition On Friday 25 May some of the Yr 11,12 & 13 Health and Physical Education students headed up to Auckland to attend the Body World Vital Exhibition. The display is a special collection of specimens designed to show visitors the basics of human health and wellness. The exhibition includes whole-body plastinates, a large arrangement of individual organs, arterial and organ configurations and translucent slices that give a complete picture of how the body works. It was a very fascinating and informative presentation with a number of interactive displays which students enjoyed taking part in.
HEEADSS Assessments Adolescence is a time of growth and development and can be challenging for some. Our School Nurse, Paula Ngatai, will be conducting health checks on students over the next two terms using the Ministry of Health’s “ HEEADSSS” assessment tool. This includes a vision test and range of questions relating to home, school, eating, drug/alcohol, depression, sexuality and safety. Any health risks identified will have the appropriate support offered to student and family. If you wish to opt out from having the check done please contact the nurse on 5788114 Ext 774
Health Survey Dear Parents/Whanau The school Health Centre will be conducting a small paper based and confidential survey the last 3 weeks of Term 2. This survey will be offered to students so we can assess their views on the health service and see if any improvements are needed regarding their future health needs. Thank you Western Bay of Plenty Primary Health Organisation

Tauranga Senior Model United Nations Last month, Tauranga Girls’ College participated in the Senior Model United Nations. We sent three delegations each representing a different country. These delegates discussed real-world views around the topic of Global Health and Wellbeing. This event was hosted by the Tauranga Branch of the United Nations Association of New Zealand at the Tauranga City Council Chambers with 17 teams from other secondary schools in the region attending. The students were required to give an opening speech and then create alliances as they discussed resolutions and for some amendments were proposed. There was much to be serious about as protocols of political debate were followed and challenged. Students are encouraged to dress in a fashion that represents their selected country. The delegations were represented by Year 10, 11 and 12 students. They were France, with Mia Marshall, Hannah Richardson, Courtney Thomas; and China with Akira McTavish-Huriwai, Lucy Paterson, Dannika Worthington; and North Korea with Lily Alton, Kayla Sycamore, Rachel Weston.
