Tauranga Girls’ College Pauline Cowens, Principal

Message from the Principal Dear Parents, The first four weeks of Term Two have been as busy as ever, with many extra-curricular events to celebrate, as well as the curriculum milestone of senior assessment week, and its subsequent feedback to Years 11 to 13 behind us. The hard work and talent of our girls, supported by the expert teaching they receive, produces successful (and enjoyable) outcomes for our girls, as profiled in this newsletter and on Twitter, (@TGCPrincipal) accessible through the school website at www.tgc.school.nz, as well as Facebook. This time of the year sees fundraising as a focus, and our PTA deserve sincere thanks from the whole community for the organisation and staging of the annual PTA Fashion Parade in week three. On the same theme of service and contributing Tuesday June 6 gave every student the chance to also contribute to fundraising with our annual Workday and thank you to everyone who has supported their efforts by providing work. We are the only college I know of where workday funds are spent entirely in

the way that students choose to enhance their school environment, this year their choices being information technology, water fountains and air conditioning. A group within the school who have not been fundraising but whose efforts have definitely enhanced the environment are the kuia working on the tuku tuku panels for the interior of Whare Mereaira. Many hours have been spent on this work, particularly this term, and with the panels now being installed we look forward to celebrating this upgrading of Mereaira in the very near future. Another milestone of this early part of Term Two has been my giving notice to the Board of Trustees of my intention to retire at the start of 2018, allowing the Board time to go through the process of finding a replacement before I depart. It takes at least two terms for the process of advertising, short listing, interviewing and the incoming Principal giving notice from their current role. Finding the person by the end of year whose vision will

progress the student centred, collaborative, research-based teaching and learning journey here through efficient and effective use of digital based technology requires due process. As I stated in the Principal’s letter last week, it has been as privilege to lead a school whose community, staff, students and whanau contains such talent and dedication and whose culture of offering opportunities for success is so well developed. Thank you to everyone who contributes to that culture as we move through ‘business as usual’ for the coming seven months before the end of the year.

Squash Results 2017 BAY OF PLENTY SECONDARY SCHOOLS INDIVIDUALS COMPETITON

On 16 May five of our schools graded players represented Tauranga Girls’ College in the annual BOPSS GRADED squash competition. There were five divisions and we were represented in four of them We had great success with: Anika Russell C1 graded player, achieving RUNNER UP in Division Two, Ashlee Linn E2 graded player OVERALL WINNER of her Division Four and Emily Chamberlain J1 graded player coming third in the same division, Division Four. Natasha Davies J2 graded player, had good games, but competition in division five was very strong and she placed overall sixth. Finally, Taylor Clarke B1 graded player who was seeded number 1 in Division 1 had to withdraw from the competition after her first game due to breathing difficulties. This was disappointing as Taylor is in Year 13 and this was her final chance to gain the much sought after BOP secondary school squash title, medal and trophy before she leaves for tertiary education. All the girls had a great experience and squash was definitely the winner on the day.

Mash up MashUp is an entrepreneurial start up competition held over a weekend in May where groups form a business and create a product idea all in 48 hours. Callie-Jay Dobbs, Ashley Cundy, Gabriella Eaton and Madison Sykes recently took out the Regional MashUp competition with their product idea for dyslexic students. iBRITE is a product aimed to lessen the disadvantage that dyslexic students face. The iBrite is placed at the top of a student’s desk. When in use the iBRITE casts a coloured light “overlay” over the student's desk allowing them to read and write with greater ease. The event was picked up by the Techday network and the editor published a report in their educators' section found at https://educators.co.nz/story/tech-help-dyslexic-students-wins-teen-startup-sprint/ The Tauranga Girls’ College team “Lemon” won $1000 and they have since decided to enter their business idea into the National Young Enterprise Scheme competition.

Young Enterprise This year we have two Young Enterprise teams entered into the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme, they are “Brite” and “Blend and Go”. Brite is made up of the Mash up team, with CEO Madison Sykes, Marketing Director Gabriella Eaton, Financial Director Callie-Jay Dobbs, Communications Director Abbey Herbison and Production Director Ashley Cundy. The team are submitting their iBRITE dyslexic learning resource into the National Young Enterprise Competition. Any queries contact the team at briteheadoffice@gmail.com Blend & Go providing a nutritious, efficient way to have their meals, with Pre-Blended Smoothies. Keep an eye out for future progress and sales by following them on Facebook at Blend & Go Left to right: Marketing Director Chae (Grace) Son, CEO Andraya Heyes, Communications Director Julia Newman, Financial Director Tayla Fruean and Production Director Catherine Sutton.

Market days and successful Business Studies groups -

30 Senior business teams (approximately 175 students) have had the opportunity to get into groups, create a business plan, produce, market and sell a product or service. The students have advice from mentors, create budgets and operate just as a real business would. Students are able to gain business knowledge, NCEA credits and money along the way, although many students choose to donate large portions to charity.

A Year 13 group of students created an online business hiring out their ball dresses and designer labels that they had in their wardrobes. Add them on instagram@borrowednz. Some of these girls plan to take their business onto university next year.

Two of our groups have entered the National Young Enterprise competition as highlighted above and we profile two other groups below Jasmine Nash, Sophie Gilchrist and Amy Earles planned their for their business making and selling Slime. Their market day was extremely successful selling out within 5 minutes, and taking orders for more to be made and delivered at a later date. They loved the experience of working together, planning their business and learn some business skills, which they said they will definitely use in the future.

School Case Competition Four Senior students submitted a business plan presentation on a case study of a business to a National competition run by Auckland University. The students were selected to attend the finals in Auckland on Saturday 3 June, where they had 4 hours to study a case and present a business plan. They were placed in the top 5 Nationally. C ongratulations to Kaeleigh Karrol, Ashlee Keelan-Orr, Joyce Mayor and Andraya Heyes. Ashlee was commended on her response to questioning and Andraya was announced a member of the All Stars team.

History Department Student awarded place as NZ delegate to Passchendaele Fu Man (Amanda) Yang in Year 13 History has won a national competition with her entry commemorating the Battle of Passchendaele 100 years ago, said to be ‘ Our Darkest Day’ in NZ’s history. Amanda wins a place in a delegation which will travel to Belgium in late September-early October this year for the Battle of Passchendaele commemorations. The prize is a 3 week trip, all expenses paid and $2,000 cash. We are very proud of Amanda, the judging panel said that Amanda’s entry was ‘ compelling, thought-provoking and highly emotive’. We have had a focus in the past years on the centenary of the Great War, last April we had a school History trip to Europe which included the WW1 battle sites in the Passchendaele and Somme areas. Amanda’s entry can be read on the next page of this newsletter.

CAREERS DEPARTMENT Term 2 has provided many career exploration opportunities for many of our students who have had the opportunity to be involved in a range of events and activities. Toi Ohomai Open Day

Defence Careers Experience

More than 60 students took the opportunity to attend workshops and information sessions as well as hearing graduates speaking on their career pathways. The speakers included a teacher, a social worker, a psychologist, a solicitor, and a photographer.

Ayla Carey was accepted to attend the Defence Careers Experience (DCE) from 10-13 April 2017. She was able to experience firsthand what a career in each of the three arms of defence force (the army, navy and air force) would be like. She has since begun her application to join the Air Force.

Medical careers experience at Grace Hospital

Six students were given the opportunity to hear presentations from an anaesthetist, a surgeon, a radiologist, a radiology technician, a registered nurse, a physiotherapist and an anaesthetic technician. One student was able to work with the Robot Simulator. All reported that it was a very beneficial day and allowed them to see the reality of working in a hospital and learn what the different roles involved.

University of Waikato Open Day (19th May) 50 students and two teachers travelled to Waikato University to get a taste of what the life would be like as a student at the Hamilton campus. The girls attended lectures, learned about scholarships and viewed the accommodation.

Spirit of Adventure - Voyage 739 Oceana Ormsby and Akashia Kiel, both Year 11 students sailed on a 10 day Spirit of Adventure voyage. All expenses were paid by the Spirit of Adventure Trust, which has a number of very generous sponsors. An excerpt from Akashia’s dairy shows us a glimpse of a day on the voyage: “Today so far has been so much fun. I climbed to the top of the mast, right to the highest point then I walked across the yard arm of the Royal sail I’m so proud of myself”……”AND I jumped into the water this morning and I basically sprinted in the water to the ladder because we saw a shark yesterday and I was not ready to get eaten!”

Youth Development Initiatives Tiki Taane Mahuta A small group of 10 students under the youth development programme enjoyed the Tiki Taane Mahuta performance at Baycourt.

The young dancers, the producer, Tiki and the guitarist answered questions from the audience after the performance. The questions ranged from wanting to know the story of Tiki’s tatoos, to where the dancers did their training.

LEO Club Members Paige Rubie, Hyemin Yoon and Kamaljit Sarai recently assisted at the Guide Dog Foundation morning tea fundraiser at Te Puna Quarry Park. The purpose of the event was to raise funds for the young guide dogs while in training with their volunteer trainers. The girls participated in support of their sponsoring Lion`s club The Te Puna Lions club. The morning was an outstanding success and nearly a thousand dollars was raised towards paying for the young dogs food and veterinary bills. Paige Rubie , Hyemin Yoon, Kamaljit Sarai
