March 2015
Dear Parents/Caregivers March already and a month of the school year behind us! Our school values of participation and pride have featured in many different ways already, with some great whole school events, including our House Assemblies, Prefect appointments, Year Nine Barbeque, Competitive Athletics, Athletics Day and Swimming Sports. It has been great to see the enthusiasm students have for their houses and for dressing up in colours. Congratulations to Mansfield House, off to an early lead in both Athletics and Swimming. Communication of all that is on offer here, as well as on your daughter’s individual progress, is very important to us and for the former you can access the daily notices on our website at www.tgc.school.nz as well as the calendar in the newsletter. For the second we will be issuing interim reports on 20 March and holding a parent evening on Wednesday 1 April where you can meet teachers and discuss the outcomes of this early part of the year. I reported last month on the outstanding academic success from last year, in NCEA Levels 1, 2 and 3 as well as scholarship. This year tutors will be supporting that success in a new way, with academic conferencing to discuss individual
students’ goals and progress. This approach builds on the work of last year and offers students regular feedback on their progress, which is also available to them and to parents through the KAMAR portal. Please contact the school if you need help accessing this information or your unique password. As parents you are also invited to take many other opportunities to be involved, through our PTA and Whanau Support Groups and in supporting our sports and arts groups. Thank you to the many parents I have already met at various sporting activities and I look forward to meeting more of you in whatever context you are able to be involved in your daughters’ learning journey to becoming an empowered woman of tomorrow.

English Maraea Ranui was our speaker at the recent Cyril Bassett RSA Speech Competition and did well, getting a Highly Commended for her speech, against some strong competition. In March, we will be entering two other speech competitions and our senior Year 13 and Year 12 debating teams will be competing at the Russell McVeagh and the U3A debates so it will be a busy month coming up. Our big news for February is the start of our Authors in Schools initiative. Ms Mejia has organised visits by four authors during this year to speak to English classes. We started with a visit by Susan Brocker who has written a number of stories for young people - her latest being a topical novel on World War 1 entitled: 1914-Riding into War. Our Year 9 students were all given a chance to hear her speak. Other year levels will each have an opportunity to hear an author over the rest of the year.
Keeping Parents Informed of Student Progress (KPI) Interim Reports for the whole school will be issued on Friday 20 March. This report summarises your daughter’s self management progress in all subject areas. If you have any concerns, please telephone the Deans of your daughter’s year level. A Year 9 and Year 10 Parent-Teacher Evening will be held on Wednesday 01 April 4.30-7.00pm. This will be an opportunity for parents of Year 9 and 10 students to discuss the report with teachers. 5 minute interview times are allocated for each subject. Positive Behaviour for Learning Tauranga Girls’ College values RESPECT. Encouraging our children to respect themselves, others and property will benefit not only the children themselves but the home, the school, the community and the society as a whole. Therefore, it is important that we do our best to instil respect in our children. Tips for developing respect in our children Practise the Golden Rule - Treat others as you want to be treated
Be positive - don’t embarrass, insult or make fun of your child Be trusting - let your child make choices and take responsibility Be fair - listen to your child’s side of the story before reaching a conclusion Be polite - use ‘please’ and ‘thank you’, knock before entering your child’s room Be reliable - keep promises. Show your child that you mean what you say Obey the law Be caring - to people, animals and environment Avoid poor role models - when you see somebody behaving in a disrespectful manner, discuss this behaviour with your child Be a good listener - give your child full attention When you set rules for your child, explain why the rule is important. For example, if the TV is to be turned off between 4 and 6 or the cell phone is to be turned off during dinner time, give her an explanation such as homework time is necessary to keep grades up in school or family time is important while at the dinner table Teach your child to be proud of who she is If you feel your child can succeed, she’ll believe she can as well. Her self-esteem will ‘sky rocket’ when she sees herself achieving her goals Encourage honesty - there is no pride in stealing, cheating or lying Most importantly, show love - say ‘I love you’ often and give them hugs. “Respect is life’s greatest treasures. I mean, what does it all add up to if you don’t have respect?” Marilyn Monroe

Careers Tertiary liaison visits to Tauranga Girls’ College: Most New Zealand University liaison staff and local Polytechnic liaison staff visit us in the first two terms of the year and then again later in the year. The first university visit usually covers: Entrance qualifications, university jargon, degree options and subjects available, scholarship opportunities, accommodation and university living and learning in general. Each university will present the content with an emphasis on their own institution but the presentations are valuable for all students considering university study. A second visit later in the year will cover Course Planning: choice of papers and degree structure, completion of application for accommodation and courses and a timeline for application, travel and course approval. PTA It was amazing to hear the hopes and visions of our new four Head Girls at the AGM and February PTA meeting and everyone there wished them well for the coming year. It was also fantastic to have some new faces and all the PTA Officer positions are now filled, thanks to some very busy people stepping up! Thank you also to our continuing Patron, Catherine Stewart. The next PTA meeting, March 18, will be in the new library and will include an informal presentation on TGC International Students and homestays by Anne Robinson. As
always, Pauline Cowens will outline school events and achievements, so come along and find out more about the opportunities available to our girls. Plus the iconic Fashion Show is provisionally planned for term 3 and any extra helpers would be warmly welcomed. The PTA helps with serving food for the teachers at the Year 9/10 parent/teacher evening on April 1, 4.30-7pm and its a great opportunity to get involved in a ‘hands on’ way. Cyber safety tips The internet and mobile phones provide a great way to communicate and express yourself with others, but it’s important to make sure they’re used responsibly so that everybody has an enjoyable online experience. It’s all about respecting yourself and others.
Tauranga Girls’ College recommends that for support and ideas on managing safety in an on-line environment (including Facebook) students and parents visit:
http://www.netsafe.org.nz/
and
https://www.dosomething.org
The following is a summary of some of the main tips around Cyber safety:
Use a strong password (a combination of upper and lower case letters, symbols and numbers). Don’t believe everything you read - make sure you know it’s coming from a reliable source. Don’t give out any private information over the internet or through mobile phones, about you, your family, friends or other people that you know. Think before you send! You have to think about what you are saying and how the recipient(s) may feel. Don’t hide behind a computer screen, if you wouldn’t say it to their face, don’t say it at all! Don’t post inappropriate or illegal content anywhere on the internet. Make sure your social networking profile is set to private (check your security settings). Only accept friend requests from people you actually know - even if it is a friend of a friend it’s not a good idea to add them unless you actually know them. Tell your friends to ask for your permission before uploading and/or tagging a photo of you on their social networking profiles. Don’t click on any links that are embedded in emails - type the URL into the browser and go from there.
Security advice for Facebook users
Only Friend people you know Create a good password and use it only for Facebook, don’t share your password Change your password on a regular basis, share your personal information only with people and companies that need it Log into Facebook only once each session. If it looks like Facebook is asking you to log in a second time, skip the links and directly type www.facebook.com into your browser address bar Use a one-time password when using someone else’s computer and log out of Facebook after using someone else’s computer Use secure browsing whenever possible, only download Apps from sites you trust Keep your anti-virus software updated, keep your browser and other applications up to date
