March 2016
Dear Parents/Caregivers March already and a month of the school year behind us! Our school values of participation and pride have featured in many different ways already, with some great whole school events, including our House Assemblies, School Wide Assembly, Year Nine Barbeque, Competitive Athletics, Athletics Day and Swimming Sports. It has been great to see the enthusiasm students have for their houses and for dressing up in colours. Communication of all that is on offer here, as well as on your daughter’s individual progress, is very important to us and for the former you can access the daily notices on our website at www.tgc.school.nz, as well up-to-date news on the Twitter feed, and through the calendar in the newsletter. For the second we will be issuing interim reports on March 24th and holding a parent evening for Junior Students on Wednesday April 13th where you can meet teachers and discuss the outcomes of this early part of the year. I reported last month on the outstanding academic success from last year, in NCEA Levels 1, 2 and 3 as well as scholarship. This success is built on our school values of respect participation and pride and the partnership between home and school. Tutors engage in academic conferencing to discuss individual students’ goals and progress and communicate the outcomes of that process to you

where appropriate. This approach builds on the work that students do and offers them regular feedback on their progress, which is also available to them and to parents through the KAMAR portal. Please contact the school if you need help accessing this information or your unique password. As parents you are also invited to take many other opportunities to be involved, through our PTA and Whanau Support Groups and in supporting our sports and arts groups. PTA in particular are looking to increase their numbers as we celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the PTA Fashion Parade, with plenty of participation opportunities in putting that event together. In whatever context you are able to be involved in your daughters’ learning journey to becoming an empowered woman of tomorrow I look forward to meeting you and sharing what a great community of learning we have here at TGC.

help this year, the 30 year anniversary. If you just don’t have the time to help with the organising, perhaps you can offer a prize, sponsor a ‘walk’ by a group of the students, or buy lots of tickets to ensure the events are sold out. The dates are May 18 and 19.
The Fashion Show planning group is underway and we need more help with shop liaison, PR and publicity, sponsorship, securing prizes, and the many many other tasks that make this iconic event For more details contact Carol Jenkin on 548 0161, a highlight in the year for so many of our girls. Positive Behaviour for Learning Initiative (PB4L)at Tauranga Girls’ College What is PB4L? It is a Ministry of Education funded initiative and this started at Tauranga Girls’ College and many other schools at the end of 2010. Research shows that lack of discipline is viewed as one of the most serious challenges facing public schools. Traditional methods of discipline does not address why the bad behaviour occurs in the first place because in most situations, young people may not know how to behave in a particular environment. Therefore, it is important that we teach our young ones correct behaviour.
To create an environment that is safe, positive and respectful For all parents/caregivers, students and staff to feel safe To continually aim for a positive environment To value respect for oneself, others and property
What are the values of PB4L that Tauranga Girls’ College adheres to? RESPECT
PARTICIPATION
PRIDE
If all of us create positive environment, our young ones will be more focused on their learning in the classroom. Together, as parents/caregivers, students and school, we can make a difference.

Cyber safety tips The internet and mobile phones provide a great way to communicate and express yourself with others, but it’s important to make sure they’re used responsibly so that everybody has an enjoyable online experience. It’s all about respecting yourself and others.
Tauranga Girls’ College recommends that for support and ideas on managing safety in an on-line environment (including Facebook) students and parents visit:
http://www.netsafe.org.nz/
and
https://www.dosomething.org
The following is a summary of some of the main tips around Cyber safety:
Use a strong password (a combination of upper and lower case letters, symbols and numbers). Don’t believe everything you read - make sure you know it’s coming from a reliable source. Don’t give out any private information over the internet or through mobile phones, about you, your family, friends or other people that you know. Think before you send! You have to think about what you are saying and how the recipient(s) may feel. Don’t hide behind a computer screen, if you wouldn’t say it to their face, don’t say it at all! Don’t post inappropriate or illegal content anywhere on the internet. Make sure your social networking profile is set to private (check your security settings). Only accept friend requests from people you actually know - even if it is a friend of a friend it’s not a good idea to add them unless you actually know them. Tell your friends to ask for your permission before uploading and/or tagging a photo of you on their social networking profiles. Don’t click on any links that are embedded in emails - type the URL into the browser and go from there.
Security advice for Facebook users
Only Friend people you know Create a good password and use it only for Facebook, don’t share your password Change your password on a regular basis, share your personal information only with people and companies that need it Log into Facebook only once each session. If it looks like Facebook is asking you to log in a second time, skip the links and directly type www.facebook.com into your browser address bar Use a one-time password when using someone else’s computer and log out of Facebook after using someone else’s computer Use secure browsing whenever possible, only download Apps from sites you trust Keep your anti-virus software updated, keep your browser and other applications up to date
