Tauranga Girls’ College Pauline Cowens Principal

Message from the Principal Dear Parents March already and a month of the school year behind us! Our school values of participation and pride have featured in many different ways already, with some great whole school events, including our House Assemblies, School Wide Assembly, Year 9 Barbeque, International Student Barbeque, Swimming Sports, and Competitive Athletics. Across all those events it has been great to see the participation, involvement and enthusiasm of our students and the passion they have for their houses and for the school values of respect, participation and pride. Communication of all that is on offer here, as well as on your daughter’s individual progress, is very important to us and for the former you can access the daily notices on our website at www.tgc.school.nz, as well as up-to-date news on the Twitter feed and on Facebook, and through the calendar in this newsletter. For the first time we will be issuing interim reports on-line this year, with Year 9 reports available through the KAMAR parent portal on Monday March 20

and Year 10-13 reports on Friday March 24, also through the parent portal. On Wednesday 22 March Year 9 parents are invited to come in for Te Ara Ako meetings with staff through the day and on Wednesday 12 April there is a parent evening for parents of Year 10 students. I reported last month on the outstanding academic success from last year, in NCEA Levels 1, 2 and 3 as well as scholarship. This success is built on our school values of respect participation and pride and the partnership between home and school. Tutors engage in academic conferencing to discuss individual students’ goals and progress and communicate the outcomes of that process to you where appropriate. This approach builds on the work that students do and offers them regular feedback on their progress, which is also available to them and to parents through the KAMAR portal. Please contact the school if you need help accessing this information or your unique password. As parents you are also invited to take many other opportunities to be

involved, through our PTA and Whanau Support Groups and in supporting our sports and arts groups. In whatever context you choose you are able to be involved in your daughters’ learning journey to becoming an empowered woman of tomorrow. I look forward to meeting you at the various events over the course of this year and sharing what a great community of learning we have here at TGC.

PTA Fashion Show

The 2017 Fashion Show will be on 17 and 18 May. It is open to all Year 11, 12 and 13 girls, regardless of experience, size etc, however there will need to be auditions if we are over-

whelmed by the numbers! There is a cost of $5 which must be attached to the application forms (available soon). We would like the girls to apply in groups of 6-8 with AT LEAST 1 parent named as the group manager. We also need raffle prizes and sponsors for the event, which are great options for families where the daughters want to be in the show but the parents/whanau don’t have the time to get involved! There are lots of opportunities for businesses to be advertised and acknowledged in the pre-show PR and promotion, and during the shows themselves. For more information please contact Carol Jenkin (jenkin@xtra.co.nz) or Carolyn Nemeth at school. Application forms and dates of auditions will be released soon.

Sponsorship and Team Apparel: Tauranga Girls’ College is interested in meeting with any business who wishes to sponsor a sports team. Please contact our Director of Sport, Mrs Kaye Barnett, on 5788114 ext 748 or email kbarnett@tgc.school.nz to discuss this matter further. All sponsorship or donations must come through the school before being distributed to teams.

Tauranga Girls’ College have a new sports uniform that will provide much needed unity across all codes. This will mean that our teams can be clearly identified as Tauranga Girls’ College sports’ teams. We also have a new sports’ hoodie and training/warm-up t-shirt that students can purchase for additional team apparel. If any team wishes to have additional team apparel it must have school approval and be purchased by Tauranga Girls’ College.

Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre... has provided farm training for young people for almost 100 years. From its initial base in Masterton, the organisation now has nine regional hubs from Northland to Southland. We now train about 1500 youth and adult learners each year. In the Tauranga area, we are looking for farmers who will welcome a group of our trainees to their farms for a few hours practical skills training each week. The students, enrolled in Year 12 at local schools, are doing agriculture programmes 2 days a week. Each group has up to 10 students and 1 tutor. We will focus on core skills of animal handling, fencing, farm safety and water supply. If you are keen to help these students gain a positive learning experience in the rural sector or if you know of someone who would be interested in being a great rural role model, please contact one of us and we will arrange a visit to discuss the options. Year 13 Camp

The year got off to a exciting start for our Year 13s with a great two days away at Totara Springs. The girls had a fun time trying new experiences like abseiling and archery, cooking damper on campfires and risking life and limb on the hydroslide! Our guest speaker, Cam Calkoen, left the girls feeling inspired to "Dream Big and Achieve More". His message to seize life's opportunities no matter what challenges you face resonated with a lot of our girls. All in all it was a perfect way to start our best and biggest year together at Tauranga Girls' College.

International Buddy Bus Trip Our International students and their buddies enjoyed a day out of school on the annual “Buddy Bus Trip”, making visits to places such as the Te Puna Quarry garden and the beach for fish and chips. More photos from that trip are at: https://www.facebook.com/ TaurangaGirlsCollegeInternational/ .

Tauranga Boys’ and Girls’ College 2017 Production Peter Pan - A Musical Adventure

Stage Challenge 2017

London Town is strangely ill-at-ease. Rumours abound that babies have gone missing from their perambulators and, as darkness falls, city workers hurry home to their families. In the Darling House, in a backwater in Bloomsbury, Mr and Mrs Darling wish they didn’t have to go out for the evening, but needs must. Leaving their children, Wendy, Michael and John, under the watchful eyes of Lisa, the maid and Nana, their Newfoundland dog – they reluctantly bid their brood goodnight. As silence descends on the nursery, a small ball of light, no larger than a gentlewoman’s fist, enters the room – it is Tinkerbell. The mischievous fairy flits frantically about as if searching for something.

Moments later, the windows swing open and Peter Pan files into the nursery. Wendy is awoken and helps Peter to reattach his shadow and, with the promise of regaling Peter and the Lost Boys with bedtime stories, she is invited to accompany him on his flight home. Wendy can’t leave her brothers behind, so she wakes John and Michael and with a sprinkling of fairy dust, the children join Peter Pan and Tinkerbell as they fly out of their nursery window and across a moonlit London. But Never Land is not as care-free as Peter had suggested. There are bloodthirsty Pirates and warrior Indians along with malevolent Mermaids – and above all, there is Captain James Hook, Peter Pan’s Eton-

educated nemesis who is forever followed by a deadly, ticking Crocodile. Bloomsbury seems another world away…

Auditions for cast will take place on Sunday March 5 at TBC . Leads : 9.30 am - 12pm Full Company : 1 - 4 pm Call backs: Monday March 6 4-6pm if needed.

After successful wins in both 2016 and 2015 at the regional competition and the award of national runner up in 2016 Tauranga Girls’ College have started preparations for this year’s Stage Challenge ‘Behind the Seams’. The performance looks in to the issue of child labour and sweat shops from a consumerist’s perspective. A team of approximately 60 on stage performers have been chosen to bring this concept to life and are are led by a very capable student leadership team consisting of: Pita Phillips and Alia Marshall (co-directors), Teagan Wilson and Kaitie Bengston (co-choreographers), Callie-Jay Dobbs (Producer), Madison Randall, Jerushah Keightley, and Zoe Beck (Costume Design), and Lara Rasmussen (Technical Designer).

Cyber Safety Tips The internet and mobile phones provide a great way to communicate and express yourself with others, but it’s important to make sure they’re used responsibly so that everybody has an enjoyable online experience.

Security advice for Facebook users

It’s all about respecting yourself and others. Tauranga Girls’ College recommends that for support and ideas on managing safety in an on-line environment (including Facebook) students and parents visit: http://www.netsafe.org.nz/ and https://www.dosomething.org

Only Friend people you know

Create a good password and use it only for Facebook, don’t share your password

Change your password on a regular basis, share your personal information only with people and companies that need it

Log into Facebook only once each session. If it looks like Facebook is asking you to log in a second time, skip the links and directly type www.facebook.com into your browser address bar

Use a one-time password when using someone else’s computer and log out of Facebook after using someone else’s computer

Use secure browsing whenever possible, only download Apps from sites you trust

Keep your anti-virus software updated, keep your browser and other applications up to date

The following is a summary of some of the main tips around Cyber safety: 

Use a strong password (a combination of upper and lower case letters, symbols and numbers).

Don’t believe everything you read - make sure you know it’s coming from a reliable source.

Don’t give out any private information over the internet or through mobile phones, about you, your family, friends or other people that you know.

Think before you send! You have to think about what you are saying and how the recipient(s) may feel.

Don’t hide behind a computer screen, if you wouldn’t say it to their face, don’t say it at all!

Don’t post inappropriate or illegal content anywhere on the internet.

Make sure your social networking profile is set to private (check your security settings).

Only accept friend requests from people you actually know - even if it is a friend of a friend it’s not a good idea to add them unless you actually know them.

Tell your friends to ask for your permission before uploading and/ or tagging a photo of you on their social networking profiles.

Positive Behaviour for Learning Initiative(PB4L)at Tauranga Girls’ College What is PB4L? It is a Ministry of Education funded initiative and this started at Tauranga Girls’ College and many other schools at the end of 2010. Research shows that lack of discipline is viewed as one of the most serious challenges facing public schools. Traditional methods of discipline does not address why the bad behaviour occurs in the first place because in most situations, young people may not know how to behave in a particular environment. Therefore, it is important that we teach our young ones correct behaviour. 

To create an environment that is safe, positive and respectful

For all parents/caregivers, students and staff to feel safe

To continually aim for a positive environment

To value respect for oneself, others and property

What are the values of PB4L that Tauranga Girls’ College adheres to?

RESPECT PARTICIPATION PRIDE If all of us create positive environment, our young ones will be more focused on their learning in the classroom. Together, as parents/caregivers, students and school, we can make a difference.

Information for Year 9 Parents From Caroline Bird, Deputy Principal Year 9 students have now been attending Tauranga Girls’ College for half a term. The students have settled well into the routines of each day and are definitely more assured in navigating their way around campus. Many have taken the opportunity to make new friends. Thank you to the many parents who took the time to attend the Year 9 Pool Picnic. This was a great opportunity for tutors to meet families in a friendly and relaxed environment. The Year 9 students embraced the opportunity to be fully

involved in the Swimming Sports, this has meant many have already received one point towards their school-wide participation for Junior Diploma. The minimum requirement is five points, it is clear that there are many students who will surpass this as they have already involved themselves in extracurricular groups whether it be the Arts, Sports or Service. The offer of activities is on-going. It is important your daughter is alert to the Daily Notices read each day in tutorial time. Your daughter’s punctual attendance at tutorial time facilitates this communication. The Daily

Notices are also available on the school website. The school website through the KAMAR web portal also allows caregivers to monitor their daughter’s attendance and progress. Details and passwords were sent by mail on December 20 2016. My role in your daughter’s life at College is the overview of the education (in the broadest sense) of all Year 9 students. The Tutor teacher has the first responsibility for students. The Dean is Mrs Kylie Valentine. Guidance Counsellors are Ms Burr and Ms Stopford.

Interim Reports and Year 10 Parent Teacher Evening Interim Reports will be available to view through the KAMAR portal for Years 10 to 13 students on Friday March 24. These will not be posted unless requested. This report summarises your daughter’s self management progress in all subject areas. If you have any concerns, please telephone the Deans of your daughter’s year level. A Year 10 Parent-Teacher Evening will be held on April 12. This will be an opportunity for parents of Year 10 students to discuss the report with teachers. 5 minute interview times are allocated for each subject. Bookings will be available online through the SchoolInterview website. Details of how to book interviews will be emailed.
