Tauranga Girls’ College Pauline Cowens Principal

Message from the Principal Welcome back to Term Two, which follows on from a holiday break that for many of our students still involved schools based activities (including music and sports competitions, ANZAC services, PTA Fashion parade rehearsals and field trips overseas) with resulting success and learning outcomes. This term promises to continue in the same vein throughout the next ten weeks, both academically and in extra-curricular involvement. It is a feature of the culture of Tauranga Girls’ College that students are busy, across sports, arts and culture and thank you to all parents and caregivers whose role is critical in supporting this participation and thank you also to all those staff and other mentors who give so much time to ensuring that our students have these opportunities to succeed. Our PTA Fashion Parade is coming up on 17 and 18 May and rehearsals are well underway for

that event with tickets available through Ticketek. This is a fundraising event that is also an entertaining and fun evening out, involving students from both TGC and TBC, and a few staff performers! Our school hall is rarely empty with so many students (and the one staff group) refining their performances. Term Two contains several other key events coming up where you as a member of our school community can see for yourself some of the amazing talents of your daughter and her peers. The Artsfest brochure advertising venues and booking arrangements for events will be out very soon and available at various venues around Tauranga as well as from reception at the college. This college is a leader in sport, in the arts and culturally, often the best in New Zealand, with National achievements that come from hard work, dedication and passion, as

your daughters identify their ambitions, explore their talents and take up the challenge to explore all the opportunities offered here at “TGC”. That we also enjoy the academic success showcased in the recently published league tables proves that the ’TGC’ Difference” is in all ways a positive one!

Japan Exchange Scholarship – Samantha Gracie-Stiles Samantha Gracie-Stiles 13PLD has just spent 3 weeks in Kasaoka Japan on a cultural and language exchange. Seven other Tauranga Girls’ College students travelled to Japan last year with “Let’s Homestay”, Hayley Ellison, Leah Howard, Keely Pakes, Anneliese Darby, Sammy Aholima and Amber Tarr, on their Tauranga/Hitachi sister city trip to Hitachi in September and the “Labo Camp” winter experience in December which are both running again this year. 2017 TGC and TBC Business Studies Trip to China In the April holidays 3 teachers took a combined Tauranga Girls’ and Tauranga Boys’ Business Studies trip to China with 19 students.

In Shanghai we visited NZ Trade and Enterprise, where we were extremely lucky to hear from the Consulate General and the CEO, who both spoke about how to export to China and gave great insight into successful NZ businesses operating in China and how they were able to break into the market.

The main focus of this trip was to see business operating in China and how New Zealanders could look at production and exporting opportunities that exist in this country. We visited 4 cities within China; Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing and Suzhou. Each of these cities offered us a different perspective of business in China. The production aspect of business included visiting denim, robotics, car and prototyping factories.

visit to the museum and Urban Planning museum, a bullet train, and a tea ceremony. Of course the marketing and sales aspect of business was utilised at the markets where the students got very good at bartering.

We also visited some historical places like Tiananmen Square, The Great Wall, the Guanzhou tower

A real highlight for the students was being billeted into a Chinese home for 2 nights. Including some of the students being able to be in our sister school Jinji Lakes Middle School in Suzhou, where many wonderful experiences were had. and the World Trade Finance Centre. Other activities included a river cruise, an acrobatic show, a

We all learnt so much on our trip and we are looking to offer this as an annual event.

Year 10 Report Evening The postponed Year 10 Parent-Teacher Evening will now be May 10 This will be an opportunity for parents of Year 10 students to discuss the report with teachers. 5 minute interview times are allocated for each subject. Bookings are available online through the Schoolinterview website, (http://www.schoolinterviews.co.nz) using the code hb5qc Details of how to book interviews have been emailed and copies have been sent home with Year 10 students. If you have any problem with bookings, please contact the school office on 578 8114.

CAREERS DEPARTMENT WAIKATO UNIVERSITY OPEN DAY - Friday 19 May For Year 13 and possibly some Year 12 students, depending on numbers. This is offered as a school trip leaving from the school bus bay at 7.30 sharp and returning by 3.30. Students should collect a permission slip from C1 and return it completed and with a $15 payment to the fees office. The cost of the trip is subsidised by the school and seats are allocated on a first in first served basis. The purpose of the trip is both to familiarise students with a University Campus and so that they can gain an insight into the various programmes offered. Students will attend presentations, visit departments and talk with the teaching staff and current students. They will also have the opportunity to explore the Campus and find out what additional facilities and services the University of Waikato offers.

TOI OHOMAI OPEN DAY- Friday 26 May, from 9am at the Windermere Campus This day is designed for secondary school students only and will offer  Workshops & information sessions  Course ideas  Lots of fun and entertainment  Prizes and giveaways Students will also be able to explore : Te Ara o Mauao, the new $14 million student-centred learning space, which is a multi-purpose, technologically enhanced learning space, which offers greater informality and flexibility for learning for Toi Ohomai students. Assault course constructed to meet the needs of Preparation for Law Enforcement, Sports Students and for general fitness and recreation. The assault course is located near the gym, adjacent to the sports field on the Windermere campus. It incorporates the obstacles for the police entrance test, obstacles for balance and strength, as well as a final 'Ninja Warrior' obstacle which will challenge mostly upper body and gripstrength. This is not organised as a school trip, so students should explain their absence to their tutor teacher in the normal manner.

MEDICAL CAREER EXPLORATION OPPORTUNITY AT GRACE HOSPITAL - 24 May between 10 am and 2pm This opportunity is available for a small number of Year 13 students who have demonstrated a keen interest in a career in the field of medicine. There will be a session for some with the robot simulator and a presentation from a theatre nurse as well as a general nurse and other professionals. Presenters will be available to stay around for any one-on-one questions, however this will depend on their work commitments. As only a few students will be able to have a session on the robot simulator Janet Keys, the GM will do a session for the other students as they have lots of photos showing areas around the hospital such as the operating theatres etc. This is not feasible as a tour due to the numbers of students and privacy concerns. Students will need to apply to Mrs Wilson for a space and they will be expected to make their own arrangements to get to Grace Hospital.
