Dear Parents / Caregivers Welcome back to the start of term four! For our senior students only 3 days remain until study leave begins for them for their NCEA external exams. This term is also a shorter term for all students and culminates for our juniors with celebration assemblies on December 8th (Year 9) and 9th (Year 10). Much to be done before those occur!

There is also much to celebrate across the curriculum .Sports Prizegiving was held on Thursday October 16th, and Arts Prizegiving on Tuesday October 28th. Academic Prizegiving on Wednesday November 5th and our Maori community Prizegiving on Friday November 14th. It is a feature of the leadership development for students at this school that the House and Arts Councils take full responsibility for the Sports and Arts evenings, annual highlights for us and for them. Our guest speaker for Sports Prizegiving, Zoe Stephenson, was named Sportswoman of the Year by the University of Waikato in the holidays so congratulations to her and to all students whose efforts have brought them the rewards of colours or trophies at this event, (and also Arts Prizegiving), from their involvement in a very busy year to date.

While our senior students focus in the upcoming

external examination preparation our Junior Students will be focussed on the Junior Examinations that begin in the fifth week of term four, as they prepare for their Junior Diploma certificate and graduation outcomes. Once the junior examinations are over the Deans at both Year 9 and Year 10 levels have been working hard on organisation for the period of time before the end of year, putting in place some extra learning opportunities both in and out of the school.

At all levels of the school students are encouraged to make the most of the next few weeks, to invest time and energy in learning as they develop their talents and study skills, to seek help to fill any gaps in their understanding and to ensure that they are ready for the next steps on their learning journey into 2015.

International and National Achievements Gym Sport At the Gymsport Nationals Catrin Pearce is National Champion in the Aerobic Development Program Level 3 and National Champion for the Trio team Aerobics Development Program Level 4.

Judo At the New Zealand Judo Nationals held in Christchurch 18-19th October Jade Tuilaepa won Gold in Junior Women’s U57kg, Silver in Cadet Women’s U57kg and Bronze in Cadet Women’s Open Weight.

Synchronised Swimming At the National Synchronised Swimming Championships Janaya Worthington and Eva Morris represented the Tauranga Syncro Club in the Free Team Combination winning Gold in the Team Combination. Janaya and Eva swam together in the Senior Tech Team that was placed first. Eva took top honours in the Junior Solo and Junior Duet. She also placed 2 nd in the Junior Figures. Janaya was placed 1st in her Aquarinas Figures and 1st in the Aquarinas Duet.

White Water Rafting The White Water Rafting team travelled to Brazil to defend their World title. They were placed 1 st in the Slalom Race, 3rd in the Head to Head , 4th in the Sprint and Down River Races and were placed 4th Overall.

North Island / Bay of Plenty / Local Achievements Football The 1st X1 Football team placed 6th in the National Premier Tournament held in Taupo. Jessica Lawrence was named Most Valuable Player.

Hockey The 1st X1 Hockey team placed 5th in the Marie Fry Tournament in Whangarei. The 2nd X1 Hockey team placed 8th in the Chris Arthur Cup for 2nd X1 teams in Auckland.

Basketball The Junior A Basketball team played in the Zonal Championship placing 4 th. The Senior A Basketball team played in the Zonal Championship placing 7th Underwater Hockey The Senior Underwater Hockey team placed 7th in the National Secondary Schools Tournament held in Rotorua. Kelly Saunders was named Most Valuable Player.

Netball The League 1 Netball team placed 25th at the Upper North Island Secondary School Championship held in Auckland.

Mountain Biking Kaylee Mudgway has been competing in the Mountain Biking Nudro Winter Series 2014. Kaylee had three 15km races winning the first two races and placing 2nd in the third. Kaylee won Gold for winning the overall series .

Judo Jade Tuilaepa has been selected in the New Zealand Judo Youth team that will be going to Australia for a training camp.

Jade will then be competing at The New Zealand Judo Championships in Christchurch in October.

Golf Joda Ngaheu competed in the New Zealand Under 19 Golf Tournament in the U15 age group, hitting her personal best and came first in the Net competition. She has also selected in the Bay of Plenty Golf team.

EmmaLee Morrell has also been selected in the Bay Of Plenty Junior Golf Team and the Bay of Plenty Women’s golf team .

Swimming Ruby Matthews competed at the New Zealand Short Course Club Swimming Championships held in Wellington. Ruby won silver in 100mand 200m Breaststroke, bronze in the 200m Butterfly in 15-16 year girls division. Ruby also broke 3 Bay of Plenty Short Course records at the meet, in the 100m breaststroke, 50m Breaststroke and the 200m Breaststroke.

Smallbore Rifle Shooting Jessie Wingrove–Moore competed in the North Island Open Small-bore Rifle Shooting Championships placing 1st in the C Grade Division.

Sports Awards - 16 October 2014 At the Tauranga Girls’ College Annual Sports Awards the winners of the Supreme awards are: MacKenzee Harris: West Bay Performers Trophy for best all-round Year 9 Student.

Brooklyn Storey: Active Outdoor Clothing Award for Outstanding Achievement at a Junior Level.

Paris Heslop: House of Travel Trophy for Junior Sport awarded to a student who represents Tauranga Girls’ College in a variety of sports and demonstrates leadership qualities.

Notice to Tauranga Hospital Staff sent out 29 September 2014 Over the next few months there will be a major construction on the Tauranga Hospital site, where Jacaranda House was, with a new building going up on the 17 th Avenue boundary. To enable this construction and to try to alleviate some of the parking congestion we have to make a number of changes.

You will be notified of the details as they happen, but the overall picture is as follows.

Some of the changes ahead due to the construction are:  In the next two weeks access to the construction area will be restricted.  The ring road will be closed.  Community Mental Health fleet cars will be moved to the Cameron Road side of the campus.  The car parks used by AH Theatre staff, Clinical School and CMH will be shifted.  There will be no car parks outside the gym.  There will be impact on delivery to the Print Shop.  There will be changes to the one-way road access to Orthotics and the Rehab stores.

While the construction work is being carried out we need to restate the rules that govern car parking on the Tauranga Hospital site. I have attached a site map.

The CEO remains committed to providing free car parking for patients, visitors and staff.  Patients and visitors car parking only, in the top Cameron Road car parks (D and B on the map).  The only staff parking allowed on the top site is in the dedicated doctors’ (car park D) and the PM shift park, (car park J).  NO staff are to park on any of the car parks accessed off Cameron Road or 20th Avenue.  Staff can only park in the Clarke Street car park, or in dedicated car parks.  If staff are seen to be parking on the top car parks, please be warned your car will be towed.  Car park G off Gate 5, Clarke Street, is for patients, visitors and particularly Cancer Centre patients.  Car park E, off Gate 3, Clarke Street, can be used by staff until new car parking spaces are developed, at which time this car park will revert to patients and visitors only. The designated doctors’ parks will remain.  Night staff can park on the hospital campus.

There have been reports of Tauranga Girls’ College students and other people parking their cars on the hospital site and walking to the College or taking buses into the city. The hospital is not a park and ride venue. If seen the cars will be towed. We will have staff patrolling the car parks off Cameron Road from 7am.

Young Enterprise: Tauranga Girls’ College, Perpetuum, was named the winner of the 2014 Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) Regional Awards at the annual dinner recently. The team of six comprises Emily McCarthy, Jessica Corkery, Kaylie Hunt, Lauryn Hill, Shannon Lee and Jacqui Morgan. They took on an ambitious challenge of developing the concept and content of a financial literacy app targeted at youth and working with a NZ Bank to create this app.

Perpetuum now head to the Young Enterprise national awards in Wellington in December, where they will pitch to five prominent business people against 20 other regional winners. They have already been named Excellence winners in one category of the special awards. Added to this Emily has been named CAANZ Managing Director of the Year from 609 teams. The girls are seeking sponsorship to get the team to Wellington after completion of NCEA exams for the competition.

Congratulations: Emily McCarthy Emily McCarthy has been awarded 1st Prize in the Law and Justice category of the UC Business and Law Essay Competition from the University of Canterbury. The competition was open to secondary school students across the country. Emily will receive a prize of $400 for her winning entry and Tauranga Girls’ College will receive $150. Congratulation Emily.

Olivia Donaldson (Year 9) spends the day with the British High Commissioner When Olivia topped the ‘Asia Wise’ competition for Australasia and was interviewed by the Bay Times, she indicated she had dual British-NZ citizenship and had a career aspiration in diplomatic work.

This news item caught the attention of the British High Commission who invited Olivia to spend the day with them recently. The High Commission was having its annual ‘Readiness’ exercise that morning which Olivia was invited to participate in - the scenario was responding to the developments unfolding when a cruise liner with 1100 passengers capsizes and is sinking off the Coromandel peninsula.

That afternoon Olivia met with various staff to see roles and pathways to making a career with the British and NZ Foreign Services. Olivia’s day finished with going to the High Commissioner’s residence and having afternoon tea with his wife and daughter. Olivia says it was a memorable experience.

History trip to Russia and eastern Europe Following a recent Information Evening with students and parents, planning is well underway for the trip. Designed to highlight topics studied in the History curriculum, including Germany, the holocaust, the Russian Revolution, and the Polish Crisis which resulted in WWII, the trip will feature visits to St Petersburg, Moscow, Berlin, Krakow and Warsaw in July next year.

Future Problem Solving teams Emily Kneale and Claudia Lamberton both Year 9 students, together with 2 boys from Tauranga Boys’ College competed in the Future Problem Solving competition. Danielle Sigley and Callie-Jay Dobbs, both Year 10 students, came 3rd in Booklet Presentation and first in Dramatic presentation at the National Finals held in Auckland 31 October– 02 November.

Shannon Couper is leaving for China. She is going on a 17 day trip (as one of four winners) to represent New Zealand in an international speech competition in Beijing and Kunming. She is also doing Stage 2 Chinese at Massey University and they have asked her to write a blog of her travels. We can follow her at shannoncouper.wordpress.com.

She is such a talented student. She will go far in life!

Congratulations to Emma Weston who recently received the highest award in Guiding, the Queen’s Guide Award, from the Governor General at a ceremony in Auckland.

Emma has been working towards this award over several years and as such has been committed to an extensive number of camps, leadership courses, and community projects. She has also led her own guide group and run events such as a cycling expedition.

Battle of Gate Pa sesquicentennial news The Battle of Gate Pa has been featured at Tauranga Girls’ College this year. Year 13 History student, Esther Liddle’s 4,000 word comparative study of the Battles of Gate Pa and Te Ranga has just been published the November edition of the Bay of Plenty Journal of History. This Journal has a wide circulation including to all the libraries throughout the country. It is described by Dr Cliff Simons ( the New Zealand Army historian), as an outstanding analysis. It was submitted for the NZ Young Historian of the Year award attaining 2nd place nationally Kalais Going (Year 9) who won the Pukehinhina Trust’s regional junior secondary school essay competition on ‘What the Battle of Gate Pa means to me’ is having her account published in the New Zealand Memories magazine early next year. Writing to the school, editor Wendy Rhodes says ‘We are proud to publish Kalais’ work in the magazine. Her reflections are indeed very moving.’

Tayla Turner-Paki (Year 12) who won the Pukehihahiha Trust’s regional senior secondary school essay on ‘Why should we commemorate the Battle of Gate Pa,’ is having her work published in the New Zealand Legacy Journal. Tayla’s reflection has been described as ‘ full of dignity and passion’ World War 1 exhibition Tauranga Girls’ College has recently hosted the ‘From Tauranga to the Trenches’ exhibition for the first 2 weeks of this term. This is a mobile exhibition put together from the Tauranga Heritage collection, commemorating the centenary of WW1. There have been interactive sessions held with around 50 classes and has provided our students with a greater understanding of the local, national and global impact of the war and the contributions made by people from Tauranga. In particular it shows what Tauranga was like 100 years ago and tells the story of Private Reginald Watkins, a Tauranga man who led an ordinary yet remarkable life. By telling Reg’s story it is hoped that the lives of all those local men who served can be honoured.

Snow Sports Team take on Secondary Schools Ski Champs On Sunday 14 September two teams from TGC travelled down to Ohakune to compete in the North Island Secondary Schools Ski Championships, on Turoa Ski Field. We had one junior team of six, and four seniors and our Coach was Margot Glaser-Brown along with assistance from her husband.

On Monday morning we had our first slalom competition up the hill. Fortunately we all managed to race, with over 514 competitors across the North Island the bad weather forecast really pushed us for time. The senior slalom track which I raced on, was not exactly in ideal conditions to say the least and by the tenth competitor for seniors we were racing in a whiteout, the clouds had dropped so we could barely see the trail let alone the ice under our skis. However, majority of us completed the first race with really good times and were put through to duel racing for Tuesday. This competition failed to take place due to the mountain being closed from gale force winds. Aside from bad weather I think it was a really fun trip.

We stayed at the LKNZ backpackers in Ohakune with TBC, so lots of us were able to make new friends. We also attended the ski social on Tuesday night which was again really fun because every teenager there was just as passionate about skiing as we were and were all there for the same reason, to make the most of the winter. I really do encourage confident skiers or snowboarders to join the Tauranga Girls’ Snow sports team next year, as you get to put your skiing to another level by racing or competing in slope style, or whether you want to attend merely to meet other skiers, it is certainly worth it.

Don Wallis, our Japanese Language teacher returned from 15 days in Japan where he spent 2 weeks researching culturally oriented task based learning ideas for the Japanese language classroom.

The trip was partially sponsored by The Ministry of Education, The Japanese Language Foundation of Japan and included visits to a number of schools in Japan and also included advanced Japanese Language lessons. There were 5 recipient teachers in total and the Japanese Language Advisor for NZ attending the programme.

A highlight was bumping into an ex student of Tauranga Girls’ College, Yoshiko Yamamoto who now works at the Kansai International Language Centre in Osaka, Japan. Another highlight was coming across a sign half way up a bush walk that said, “Beware of Bears!” which is not something we see in NZ! Also WYS is seeking Japanese Language immersion scholarship candidates for 2015. Anyone interested should see Mr Wallis to get some information or visit their website.

Physical Education Curriculum Work Swimming At Tauranga Girls’ College as part of the Junior Health and Physical Education programme girls are involved in units of work where teaching and learning activities are completed in the school swimming pool. We are very fortunate to have such a wonderful facility for our school community to use. The pool is lovely and warm – mid 20*C and very comfortable.

Students are expected to make the very most of all learning opportunities and be well organised for all classes in the pool. They will need to have attire suitable for swimming.

Sun Protection As the weather warms up students are encouraged to be proactive when outdoors. For outdoor physical education classes they are encouraged to apply sunscreen, use a hat and wear sunglasses.

Schoolhopper update The school bus routes are now available for viewing on the Baybus website. These routes are based on information we have received from you and from the bus operators. We’ve made a few minor changes to them, however we believe these should provide a similar level of service.

However, as with any new network there may be things we have missed, things that are wrong or that you think don’t look quite right. Please let us know. We also encourage you to share this information with your school communities. We’ve included a short piece below which may help with this.

Australian Schools Competition (ICAS) This year Tauranga Girls’ College entered 145 students (16 more than last year) into the ICAS competition. More than 355,500 students from New Zealand, Australian and the Pacific region participated in the Assessment.

Positive Behaviour for Learning Tauranga Girls’ College values RESPECT. Encouraging our children to respect themselves, others and property will benefit not only the children themselves but the home, the school, the community and the society as a whole. Therefore, it is important that we do our best to instil respect in our children. With respect comes less conflict and fights.

What should we do as parents/caregivers?

We need to be compassionate We need to be transparent We need to be real We need to be thoughtful We need to be tolerant and understanding of others rather than insult them or their culture We need to show courtesy and consider other people’s point of view.

What are some specific ways to build respect in our homes:

Practise the Golden Rule - Treat others as you want to be treated          

    

Be positive – don’t embarrass, insult or make fun of your child Be trusting – let your child make choices and take responsibility Be fair – listen to your child’s side of the story before reaching a conclusion Be polite – use ‘please’ and ‘thank you’, knock before entering your child’s room Be reliable – keep promises. Show your child that you mean what you say Obey the law Be caring – to people, animals and environment Avoid poor role models – when you see somebody behaving in a disrespectful manner, discuss this behaviour with your child Be a good listener – give your child full attention When you set rules for your child, explain why the rule is important. For example, if the TV is to be turned off between 4 and 6 or the cell phone is to be turned off during dinner time, give them an explanation – homework time to keep grades up in school or family time while at the dinner table Teach your child to respect themselves – to be proud of who they are If you feel your child can succeed, they’ll believe they can as well. Their self-esteem will sky rocket when they see themselves achieving their goals Encourage honesty – there is no pride in stealing, cheating or lying With your teenagers, allow them to show independence such as clothing or hairstyles but make sure you have guidelines. They will appreciate the respect you show them Most importantly, show love – say ‘I love you’ often and give them hugs


