Message from the Principal It’s a sign!

The Sports Prizegiving celebrated a mouth watering showcase of talented TGC students who have, due to their commitment and dedication, achieved a lot for themselves and also for our School. See the calendar in this newsletter for the Prizegiving schedule.

You will have noticed we have a new sign at the front entrance to our school.

Thanks to Coredesign for their creative assistance. The college has every intention of working towards being the ‘ School of Choice’ for girls in the Bay and our signage not only posts this for us all but is also an improvement to the existing signage which was looking a little weathered.

Farewell to Senior Students The final day for senior students sitting NCEA examinations is Thursday 1 November. The day begins with a full school assembly in honour of our departing Year 13’s. Year 13’s have a dinner that evening. All senior students will have a half day only on Thursday and are expected to be in the correct uniform.

Audrey Hepburn who this portrait is of, was an icon 60 years ago and is painted here in the TGC uniform.

The 50th Reunion artwork

depicted the school uniform over time and this piece of artwork puts a modern twist on that theme. Tenders close on Friday 02 November. The lucky purchaser will be notified after that date.

Celebrating Student Successes The first of the Prizegivings for the year got underway last week and guest speaker and former

Senior Prizegiving not just Academic Prizegiving at Holy Trinity Church Each year the school celebrates the elite academic students with an academic Prizegiving. This year and going forward, the event will be called the Senior Prizegiving and celebrates the elite, Art, Sport, Maaori (each of these have a separate PG too) and Academic students of our College. This better reflects the all round success and strengths of our students. This most certainly includes our academic and NCEA top achievers. The event is on Monday 05 November and we look forward to seeing you all there.

Who will make up our student leadership team for 2019?

A rigorous process to select the best student leadership team is well underway. Students completed their application for a formal role back in August. Two rounds of voting have been undertaken and a shortlist of students to be interviewed has been announced. The process has been a challenging one with such a talented co-hort. This year, with the change in the student leadership team from 4 to 7 and based on student voice, the team will not be announced at Prizegiving as in the past but will be announced after NCEA exams allowing students to focus on these rather than be distracted by roles to be undertaken in 2019.

Uniform news You will recall that a group of students have been exploring different uniform options.

Trousers, blouses and shorts have been explored and so far, a new blouse has been chosen and now approved by the BoT. The new blouse will be phased in.

That means, all new students will purchase the new blouse, but if you own a polo shirt, you can still wear it in 2019. In 2020 everyone will be in the new blouse. Whilst the blouse is slightly more expensive, it will keep its shape, wear longer and feels nicer (according to the students who have been trying the prototype). Students in Year 12, can then keep this blouse for Year 13 and will simply get stitched Year 13 on to their blouse. In the past, students have had to purchase a separate blouse for one year. Tara Kanji Principal Happy Birthday TGC! Tauranga Girls’ and Boys’ Colleges celebrated their 60th Diamond Jubilee over Labour Weekend.

Former students, staff and support staff attended the event at TGC. Many stories were shared, hugs given, laughter heard and photographs taken. The class of 1957 (the year that the students were being taught by the then Deputy Principal from the Tauranga College (TBC site) but before the school was officially opened in 1958) and those from 1958 reminisced and the Jubilee cake was enjoyed by all. It was lovely to have former Principals Mrs Cowens, Mrs Scott and Mrs Solomon attend and guest speaker and alumni Carol Beaumont challenged our thinking with her address.

Mardi Gras Each year Tutor Groups organise fundraising stalls and activities to raise money for Tauranga Girls’ College Arts, Sports and Cultural groups. Although a lot of time and thought is spent preparing for the event it is always a lot of fun. This year’s event, held on Tuesday 25 September was another success raising $3260

Cricket The 1st X1 started their prep for nationals this holidays with a quadrangular tournament in the last week of the holidays at Gordon Spratt Reserve, Papamoa. The team had very strong batting performance with Nensi Patel, Briana Perry and Holly Topp retiring every time they were send into bat and Sarah-Jane Stone emerging as a talent with the bat also.

Day one saw a less than decisive win over Napier Girls, with bowling very rusty after a two term break. Day two was rain delayed and only one game started, we batted first to get a good total, only to be called off by heavy rain two overs into Waikato Dios innings. Day three saw gale force winds make cricket a miserable affair, however, giving some of our lower order batsmen a chance, we racked up 120 runs which would need a great bowling performance to defend.

Takapuna Grammar took the game from us in the last over, however, it was worth it to blood some new players which we would not have done if it had been a competition game. To finish the day we played a T10 against Waikato Dio and took the opportunity to have some fun, swapping our wicket keeper and bowlers as well as changing the batting order to give everyone a go.

We won this game decisively and everyone went home to thaw out.

Big thanks to the teams that travelled to play us and to Leigh Perry for all her organisation of the tournament.

Mahnoor Qadri - Year 10

This is my woodcut print. We were first told to choose a picture of a New Zealand landscape and I chose Milford Sound. I started with a realistic sketch, then another sketch in the style of my artist model. I then decided to incorporate Pacifica motifs into my sketch. During this process I simplified my landscape so that I could print three different colours and hand paint at least two more. I then cut the wood three different times and made three different prints. Afterwards I painted in the sky by hand.

I left a little bit of detail out on the left hand side but I liked the way my print turned out.

Tumbling

Tauranga Girls’ Pink Walk Tauranga Girls’ College held its annual Breast Cancer Walk in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. Girls dressed in PINK and completed a circuit through the school. Senior girls coordinated by Phoebe Edwards and Leah Van Zyl set up and organised the event for the girls.

Donations collected are given to our local Breast Cancer organisation.

Congratulations to Gemma Gilmore who came first in her division at the recent Junior Women's International Tumbling, winning a Gold Medal. She is also a National Women's Champion in Junior International Tumbling, won The Cup (highest score from all passes from all competitors in that division and is part of the team of three that won the National Teams Trophies - International Division.

Past student to represent NZ Ruby Matthews, student at Tauranga Girls’ College who left to go to Auckland University this year, was accepted into Swimming NZ High Performance Swimming squad and competed at NZ Short Course swimming Championships held last week in Auckland.

Ruby won the 19yrs & over finals in the morning for the Female 200 Individual Medley, 200 Breaststroke, 400 Individual Medley and silver in the 200 FLY. She broke the BOP Open Women's record for the 200 Breaststroke, 400 IM and 200 IM. In the A Finals at night, Ruby was aiming for a qualifying time to attend the 2018 FINA World short Course championships in Hangzhou, China in December. She swam a new pb and qualifying time of 4:44.80 and has been chosen to be part of the team being sent by New Zealand.

Tauranga Girls’ College Sports Awards On the evening of Thursday 18 October we held our annual Sports Awards ceremony where we recognised the students who have represented TGC in our premier teams and individuals who have excelled at their chosen sport(s). 180 students received awards, 19 sport trophies from the 31 sports being represented on the evening.

2018 has been a good year for Tauranga Girls' College with 88 students receiving ‘Colours’, which is achieving ‘Excellence’ in their sport. We have 14 National champions and 12 New Zealand Representatives.

The evening was MC’ed by Sports Captain; Angel Haeata-Burrows and expertly presented by the 2018 Sports Council. The ceremony had a good balance of formal recognition of athletes, an entertaining guest speaker former Sport Captain Vivianne Conway, sport prizes and a video clip of sport at TGC this year.

The night ended with the presentation of the Supreme sports awards which are listed below along with our New Zealand Representatives and National Champions.

Winners of the trophy for Best Girls’ school at New Zealand Secondary School Canoe Slalom Championships.

5th at New Zealand Secondary Schools Cricket Championships in December 2017 and have qualified to attend again in 2018.

3rd at New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics and Road Race Championships in December 2017.

Rowing - U16 Quadruple Sculls (coxed)

1st in New Zealand for the girls U16 quadruple sculls at Maadi Cup. This team also placed first at the North Island Secondary Schools Regatta.

The Christine Hammond Trophy which is awarded to a student who has participated in a College team and consistently demonstrated; outstanding sporting commitment, fair play and assistance to others involved in sport. The assistance to others in sport is an important component of this award.

International Youth Silent Film Festival Awards There were 35 entries in the IYSFF Awards which were held last Wednesday night at Baycourt. Sophie Webster’s silent film "Case Thief" was selected as one of the Top 12. Sophie also won the "Best Shot" award and a beautifully framed certificate as well as $250. The top films were all presented with live music played on the Baycourt Wurlizter. Everyone had a a great evening.

The ZONY's have been established to recognise performance and production excellence amongst members of Musical Theatre New Zealand. The Zony Awards evening for Zone 2 was held on the 22 September at the Distinction Hotel in Rotorua. Zone 2 consists of 25 Societies from the central North Island, covering an area from Taupo to the Bombays.

This year 29 shows where judged over 25 different categories. Tauranga Girls’ and Boys’ production of Beauty and the Beast was nominated as a finalist in eight of these categories. This meant that we were in the top five or six in each of the following categories.

To be nominated for an award is great recognition for a job well done. Congratulations to all those involved in achieving the standard that enabled us to be nominated in so many categories.

The Award we brought home was the Best Youth Production. This was against a very strong field of nominations and a great achievement. Again congratulations to all those involved, both those in front of the audience and all those unseen behind stage.

Engineering Day

A group of Year 11 and 12 students had the opportunity to attend an Experience Engineering Day at the University of Waikato last week. The girls worked through a series of activities which included building a car, coding, robotics, making a bike light, building a trebuchet, using composite sand to build pillars and a platform which people could stand on.

They also looked around the Oji fibre engineering exhibition where they were able to try brownie made with mealworm, the future of protein in our diet, maybe.........

It was a great day in which the girls were exposed to the exciting possibilities of a career in Engineering.

Career in Engineering..

Jordan Gilby a Year 12 student, has been selected to attend the WiE CAN Woman in Engineering Residential Programme at the University of Canterbury in January 2019.

In the congratulatory letter received from the University of Canterbury the writer commented that they were ‘excited to have Jordan on board and were extremely impressed with her mature and eloquent application’.

Jordan included the the photos above with her application, showing her completing work experience in the engineering field. She worked at 'I and M Gorrie Engineering' in Whangarei, with her grandfather and his friend. There is no doubt that this indicated her strong interest in the field of engineering.

The letter went on to congratulate Tauranga Girls’ College on their commitment to encouraging female students to excel in STEM subjects, as we had numerous other students who applied. 263 applications were received from 119 schools, so selections were limited to one student per school.

Self Defence Workshop On Tuesday and Wednesday this week, Ms Thomason's Self Defence class, and Miss Noble's tutorial group, each had a great day doing a Self Defence workshop.

Julie Goldingham from the Women's Self Defence Network - Wahine Toa, was the instructor. She ran an excellent course and the girls were able to practice physical techniques to keep themselves safe and discussed various situations where they could be in danger and what strategies they could use to protect themselves.Julie was an enthusiastic instructor who kept up a high level of energy throughout the course.

Year 13 Drama Production On Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 September, during NZ Theatre Month, the Year 13 Drama class presented Daughters of Heaven by Michelanne Forster. Based on a true story, the script explores the 1954 murder of Christchurch woman Honora Rieper by her daughter Pauline Parker and Pauline’s friend Juliet. The story has also been explored in Peter Jackson’s film Heavenly Creatures.

Friends, family and staff made up the full audiences each evening and were impressed by the students’ mature and affecting performances.

Special thanks must go to Anne Bryan (Year 13, 2017) who returned to fill a role and support the rest of the cast.

Lucky winner at CANVAS Careers Expo.

Year 12 student Dannika Worthington was the lucky winner of a Dive Zone, Tauranga , PADI open water course, worth $550. She entered the draw while on a school visit to the CANVAS careers expo held at ASB Arena.

It was an especially useful prize for Dannika as she wants to be a Marine Archaeologist in the future. She says having the PADI certificate will allow her more career options for her future, as well as teaching her important skills for her current number one career choice idea.
