September 2014
Dear Parents /Caregivers You will be reading this September newsletter update in the week after our senior students have sat their benchmark examinations, in the middle of Winter Tournament week when large numbers of our students are participating at elite level in their chosen sport, and at the end of a long season of competition at national level for our musicians. This juxtaposition of academic challenge with extra-curricular challenges is part of what makes the journey of our students at this college special, as they rise to all challenges. Unique about Tauranga Girls’ College is the passion that spans across all learning environments in a wide range of settings, including, but not restricted to, the academic focus of the classroom. Passion for achievement, the focus of the goals your daughter sets for herself each year, and an essential skill in an increasingly competitive world. The qualities for a future that includes jobs not yet created include problem solving, time management, responsibility, resilience, creativity, work ethic and participation. All of these are developed as much in the environment of sport, the arts and community service as in any
classroom. Once developed these skills transfer naturally to the lifelong learning from specialist subjects your daughter is taking here and underpin her future success. As your daughter plans for 2015, selecting her options and structuring her year, if she wants to engage in yet another opportunity here, help her to make the addition to a busy schedule work, and if your daughter is not engaging in the wider curriculum yet, encourage her to start. The more that she can show that she can do, and the more she learns about her talents the more likely it is that she will succeed. More importantly, in the context of lifelong learning the more opportunities seized, the more success builds on success and the richer and more fulfilled the life experience will be.
