TAURANGA GIRLS’ COLLEGE

Tauranga Girls’ College
Message from the Principal Tēnā koutou It is hard to believe that we are in Week 7 of Term Three already. It has been a busy term with girls excelling academically, in the arts, culturally and in sport. I have had the pleasure of attending numerous events Tauranga Girls’ College is involved in and I always leave with a sense of pride. Pride in the skill set that the girls show in their chosen field, but more than that, pride in the way the girls represent themselves and the school, showing confidence coupled with generosity of spirit. I believe this occurs because of the way the school and you, as whānau, work together to nurture and empower our young women. Our open evenings and options nights were a great opportunity for us to meet with new and existing whānau to focus on the way we work together to support your daughter. The evenings were a great success and they highlighted the plethora of opportunities
offered here at Tauranga Girls’ College. As we enter the phase of the year when girls are sitting benchmark exams and selecting options for next year, I encourage you to talk with your daughter about her learning and encourage her to share her hopes and dreams for the future with you. I would also encourage you to work with the school to help her achieve those goals and to understand the steps she will need to take each year to be successful. These steps should focus on academic skills but also students taking responsibility for their learning and actively getting involved in what is happening at school. Being engaged in learning involves asking and answering questions, solving problems and exploring ideas. While learning should take place in the classroom it can also take place on the sports field, at lunch time, during the school production, at kapa haka,
while learning an instrument or when planning the next mufti day. Please take the time to understand how engaged your daughter is with her learning, talk with her about what she has been involved in while at school so that the partnership between Tauranga Girls’ College and you is strong and working in the same direction for your daughter. Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini – our combined efforts are needed for success. Ngā mihi nui
