Introduction

Pond’s, the original skin care brand, is transforming its vision to encompass holistic wellness. With a new, broader scope, we now need a new visual language to tell the story of Pond’s.

Pond’s Visual System Pond’s began in 1846, when pharmacist Theron R. Pond developed a cure-all healing tea from witch hazel extract. In the past 150 years since, it has evolved into a skin care brand primarily for women, but it has lost significant brand recognition and relevance. Today, it is undergoing another transformation that will keep it relevant and fresh for another 150 years to come. Technology, urbanization, and chemical products have an increasing role in our lives, so natural experiences are becoming more valuable and sought after. That’s why we are taking Pond’s back to its roots as a producer of natural solutions for overall health and wellness. We have developed

new expansions of the Pond’s brand to serve our new vision. It is only natural that we define the system of visual language that expresses the new brand. Beginning with our new logo, we have expanded the visual system into type, color, imagery, and graphic elements. In this book, we will lay out the guidelines for the new system to ensure consistent use of all the elements, and explore the expansions of the brand where the elements will exist.

History

Pond’s has over 150 years of experience developing products to nurture healthy, radiant skin. Now we are reframing Pond’s focus on skin care as one element of a holistic approach to total body wellness. Pond’s began in 1846, when New York pharmacist Theron R. Pond developed a healing tea from witch hazel extract, which he sold as ‘Golden Treasure’, later called Pond’s Extract. The product was a cure-all marketed to families under the brand name Pond’s Healing. However, as the burgeoning skin care business expanded, Pond’s began to lose sales to its higher priced competitors because, as one market researcher noted, “women thought that higher priced creams must be better.” The brand lacked a sense of exclusivity. Pond’s fought back with an extensive advertising campaign beginning in 1923, based on testimonials from prominent figures, including Queen Marie of Romania, which did indeed improve sales at the time. As time went one, Pond’s continued to develop skin care products, and in 1940 expanded into makeup lines with its Pond’s Face Powder and Pond’s Angel Face products. But by the 1950’s, Pond’s

was stuck in the middle to lower end of the cosmetic market. In 1955, Pond’s was combined with the Chesebrough Manufacturing Company, the makers of Vaseline, as a strategy to keep Pond’s company alive. This was successful until the mid 1980’s when revenues began to flag, and the company was acquired by Unilever in 1986. Soon after, under its new ownership, the Pond’s Institute was opened in an attempt to position the brand as a leading expert in science-based skin care. Yet while it retains a devoted cult following, Pond’s still occupies the bottom shelf of drug stores and pharmacies, and many consumers are unaware or dismissive of the brand. This tells us the time is right for a new, more powerful take on Pond’s identity, so consumers can really see what Pond’s has to offer today.

The New Logo The new Pond’s logo holistically embodies the nature of the new incarnation of the brand.

Pond’s golden nautilus shell expresses healing in its relation to water and beauty in its expression of the golden ratio, a naturally occurring mathematical ratio that is considered to create harmonious and beautiful proportions.

The nautilus is also an ancient species, relating Pond’s back to its roots in the realm of tried and true natural remedies, where the brand will focus its future expansion. The custom logotype creates a sense of warmth that ties back to the idea of Pond’s as a trusted brand.

Finally, the nautilus as a living animal relates it back to the logo concept of the fundamental elements of life.

Type Standards The Pond’s brand employs three distinct typefaces.

Bell MT

Neuzeit Grotesk

Bembo

Headlines, quotes and call-outs Bell MT is a more modern facsimile of the typeface cut originally for John Bell by Richard Austin in 1788. Although inspired by French punchcutters of the time, with a vertical stress and fine hairlines, Bell is classified as a Transitional serif. Its rather pronounced brackets give the letters a certain softness that works well with the Pond’s logotype and graphic mark.

Subheads and captions Neuzeit is a geometric sans-serif typeface designed by German type designer Wilhelm Pischner. It was originally released in 1928 and the design was intended to be timeless, making it an excellent choice for a brand like Pond’s that has persisted through many years and styles. The geometric forms offer a fresh contrast with the organic features of the other typefaces in the system, as well as the logotype.

Body copy The Bembo design is an old-style humanist serif typeface originally cut in 1495 and named after notable poet, Cardinal and literary theorist of the time Pietro Bembo. The calligraphic style and subtle curves in the letterforms impart a warm human feel to the typeface, and so it pairs well with the organic style of the overall visual system for the new Pond’s.

Graphic Elements Graphic elements help convey a natural, organic feeling.

Containers These ovular shapes can be used as containers for text, illustrations, and in some cases both. They may be layered over each other and on top of photos to add a sense of depth.
