Title: Deck

OBJECTIVE—design

an app that solves a problem. Deck is an app for card players, designed to make playing cards more convenient when one is traveling or out with friends. With Deck, card players will never be caught without their deck of cards, no matter where they are. DESIGN—inspired

by card play. The app design is meant to feel as rich and playful as a deck of cards, taking its inspiration from the abundance of patterns, illustrations, and type found on playing cards throughout the centuries. Deck is organized with a unique pattern marking every section of the app, plus a roulette-inspired wheel navigation to make clicking through the app feel as full of possibility as shuffling through a newly opened deck of cards.

an existing coffee table book. Galapagos is a natural history book and personal account of the famous islands. With the lush photographs and fascinating content taken from the original book, this redesign transforms Galapagos into an attractive coffee table book with appeal for a modern audience.

of nature. Drawing inspiration from the book’s subject matter, the study of nature and history, the new design incorporates diagrammatic elements and a clean layout to give the book a scientific sensibility. Title: Monotype Grotesque

OBJECTIVE—design

a type specimen booklet for the typeface Monotype Grotesque. One of the early grotesque typefaces, Monotyope Grotesque was developed in the first half of the 20th century. In this type specimen booklet, the venerable typeface is displayed in a bold, modern context to appeal to graphic designers working now, who may be looking for the right typeface for their next project or just for fun.

old dog with new tricks. The early grotesque typefaces have a charming warmth of character, quirky features, and sense of fun. The design here reflects this with a distinctive bright color palette, a whimsical tone of voice, and unique, playful compositions. 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08

OBJECTIVE—develop

a brand that solves a problem. All + Every is a brand built to take on a simple problem: helping adults make sunscreen a part of their daily routine for healthier and more youthful skin. Everyone knows they should wear sunscreen, yet few people do. All + Every solves this problem by making it both easy and accessible to find the perfect sunscreen with an app-based sunscreen subscription service, public sunscreen vending machines, and a series of posters for an awareness campaign. DESIGN—bright

as sunshine. To turn something that most people ignore into a daily habit that they can feel good about, the brand needed to be friendly and approachable. The bright colors paired with bold graphics help make the idea of sunscreen more positive and appealing to users beginning a daily sunscreen habit.

Title: Go Buddies!

COURSE: VISUAL THINKING INSTRUCTOR: HUNTER WIMMER CATEGORY: BRAND IDENTITY TERM: FALL 2017

OBJECTIVE—redesign

a brand and materials based on signage found in the local area. Go Buddies! is a home-grown pet services company located in Oakland that posts flyers in the East Bay. From the information on the flyers, a new and unique brand identity evolved, including a logo and identity system. This project includes a brochure booklet, post cards, and a website for Go Buddies! in its new incarnation. DESIGN—creating

a brand you can trust. The use of soft primary colors and animal silhouettes is intended to endear the audience and create a warm, familiar feeling, while the stamped ink textures serve to suggest a human touch for this local business. The bold slab serif typeface recalls early sign-making styles, meant to evoke a small-town feel of an earlier era.

Title: Lost in Translation Poster Series

COURSE: TYPE EXPERIMENTS INSTRUCTOR: WIOLETA KAMINSKA CATEGORY: EXPRESSIVE TYPE POSTER TERM: FALL 2018

OBJECTIVE—create

a series of three film posters to convey a mood through manually altered type forms. At times, practical effects can be more emotive than computer graphics. Type can emote just as strongly as images. In this series of posters, practical effects and type take the center stage to portray the wistful, melancholic mood of the 2004 film Lost in Translation, in which two people seek meaning in their lives while they are travelling abroad in a foreign city. DESIGN—light

and texture, hinting at a distant scene. Vellum, cut paper, and light effects created the textures and images for this poster series. Colored lights and flames behind a sheet of vellum created the soft shapes and forms, which hint at a distant landscape that the viewer can't quite make out, helping to create a feeling of distance, longing, and loneliness.

OBJECTIVE—design

a conceptual cookbook. This collection of cocktail recipes explores modern bars that celebrate historic speakeasy culture and serve up classic drinks with a new twist. The book offers a look into modern speakeasy bars while offering up some of their famous recipes for readers to recreate in their own home bars. A guide to essential liquors and bar equipment and glassware is also included. DESIGN—a

modern interpretation of a bygone era. The overall visual direction of the book is very much inspired by the past. Geometric patterns throughout the book are meant to recall Art Deco styles of the 1920's, but with a distinctly modern application. Stamp-like motifs, often running off the page, refer back to older and more inexact printing techniques.
