The project, especially as the program, tries to establish itself from very core context of Athens and Greeks. The critics coming from different scales feeds the program and project location. The indigenous Greek character of using and representing itself in the public spaces /against the state is exemplary to the humanity; therefore, project’s main program is a political school which is beyond the formal perceptions. It is the place where Athenians from different social groups and tourists (political) come together and create a vivid/rebellious atmosphere. It is strongly connected to the place and locals; however, it is also seen as globally influential place due to tourists/foreigners involved. The political program is not an object materialized in a single structure but several different scales interventions which dissolve in the city context. Therefore, it is not an isolated architecture piece but part of streetscape and cityscape. The democratic discourse arises from the fragmental and polyphony approach. The political and democratic public space is open to inputs from the public who represent itself formally and informally in this part of the city. The places have the soul of unfinished structures which is open to public input; which represent dynamism, changeability and temporality/contemporary age against bold permanent architecture. Public accessibility is one of the crucial points which triggers public to gather and discuss. The flow of movement as the streets provided is the part of designed spaces. The streets gain depth via closed spaces. Additionally, the structures settling in the cinematic promenade known as ancient way activate the passive urban path via unconventional positioning in an urban context which creates shock effect sparking a debate on democracy. The debates can be about the concept of democracy itself or the applications from local and foreign governments or the democratic and political space. The Greek soul of protest public can be an example for other communities around the world; moreover, Greeks can learn from others via this political institution. Art is another strong tool for the provocative space since its unique and bold statement can contribute to the societies political discourse and opinion. The project in total is providing a floor to public, society, tourists and artists to discussion and expression. The project seeks to create a politic and democratic urban environment with careful interventions considering the current economic crisis.

Greeks have variety of identities; Antique, Byzantine, Ottoman, European(?); therefore, the city has stratifications densely located, even built on another. Additionally, the dominant and widely spreaded one is the polykatoikia. The balconies, awnings, plants are the main character for the most part of the city. However, rocky and high hills are hanged overeverything.

Greek community is aware of their political power; thus, they oftenly use their protest right which even caused junta government to fail. Therefore, the distinctive character of Greeks can be influencial and examplary from local to global scale. Instead of using global interventions over Greek community, indigenous explotion can be used as solution to current crisis.

Therefore, the project aims to propose something self-organizing public program which can flow to the Syntagma Square (where the Parliament is) with the support of another side of promenade starting in Exarcheia. Protests, demands from public or controlling the state can be sourced from the promenade where two sides having the political power of ‘Public’.

As government strategy to making city metropolis via the high costly externally sourced project, the project aims to propose something indigenous to Athens and Greek society which can jump from local to global scale and be an example on a global scale, reversing the process of today’s city strategy.

The institution or school is combination of several program and building-structures. The main building -lecture center positions itself as promoter of Thissio square. L-shaped form creates boundaries and permeable relations. The open library is part of the institution (non-institution?) which provides both coworking space for public and scholar environment for the political researchers and guests. It is also a space of transportation hub which house Thissio metro station. Another foot of the institution is workshops where public produces commons like literature, music, film, applied and fine arts. The workshops are both educational and social spaces where public learn and express itself. The bazaar structure functions as non-defined space; therefore, the users can transform the structure into several uses.

Additionally, the local and global artist community is another important user /contributors to the project since art is a powerful way of representation and creative process enriching the cultural and political life. The Technopolis designed as the cultural center will be the main stage/show place for this group; additionally, the artist residency program can be attractive for both Greek and international artists who can contribute the political discourse of the public and political school. They also have the potential of triggering the cultural life and creativity in an economic crisis which can be overcome with these alternative ways. Another program is recreation through archaeological site excavated in the future. In this way, the antique heritage will be the part of daily life since it is city void where Athenians can enjoy the spacious land and cultural scape. The last but not the least program is dwelling for locals and tourists. The dwelling can be placed where the tourists and foreign scholars meet the local life via Athenians who left the region with decentralization policies. Finally, looking to the site as whole urban texture, existing functions can be strengthening the project such as nightlife at Gazi, Kerameikos archaeological site, cafes and restaurants next to the metro line and bazaar just next to Thissio metro station.

Luebkeman states that the complex world should be understood in ďŹ ve aspects: social, technological, environmental, economic and political (known as STEEP)š. The future vision should be created as an image interacting / speaking about all these aspects; otherwise, they would not go beyond the limits of shallow speculations. Another point is that future vision should involve the critics of today such as global warming and its results such as shortage of drinking water and raise of the sea level, the pollution in natural resources especially at oceans, the population growth versus limited natural resources and the refugee crisis. However, all these concepts cannot be thought without seeing the possibilities of Digital Revolution. The future is strongly connected to the Digital Revolution (Third Industrial Revolution). As First and Second Industrial Revolutions changed the life and physical environment immensely, the third one is going to result in the world which is beyond our expectations. 3-d printers, drones, virtual realities have been just started to show what future holds via technology. When the Spanish government banned the public protests near public buildings, the activists orginized a virtual protest with the contribution of public via web cams saying ‘We are not crime.’ There are so many possibilities of technology for the future beyond the today’s popular perception for the future.

6 . Future image public space and technology

Japanese culture and aesthetic values are totally different than the western perception of the life. The daily routines / habits are schoking for the rest of the world. Sleeping in the public areas such as metro stations or streets are quite normal for the Japanese; however, in the western culture sleeping in front of public is seen as weakness. The future will change the social perceptions and routines. Japanese life style is an example how to break the conventional life perception.

Today’s urban spaces mostly shaped by finance and related sectors under neoliberal policies do not have spatial quality on the street level for pedestrians especially in Central Business District such as Levent and Maslak. The street levels are seen as gaps for cars and parking lots. Public spaces like squares and the streets provides such encounters among different demographic groups and creates the heterogeneous structure of the society and humanity; however, the common spaces of central business districts are the cafes and restaurants or shopping malls which filters society according to their income levels. Also, the building typologies are evolved in the way which the building does not have any contextual relationship with the city and its surrounding, instead it creates an artificial and isolated world inside. These filtered environments via turnstiles and securities causes corruption in human relations which brings about cracks in social structure, human forgets being a social creature due to money based self-interest structure of homogenous users of CBDs. Though their edge relationship with natural spaces like forest such as Maslak, every single piece of land is covered with concrete under the name of urbanized society of 21st century; thus, human is inserted artificial bell jars without any relationship to real nature. The green roofs and the trees in vases do not represent the real. Additionally, the green building certificates are about some criterias related to energy and resource consumption-savings but not about the things which human can perceives or relates. Another problematic in central business districts of Istanbul is the urbanism and planning issues. Due to rapid urbanization and development, the central business district zones are not planned in proper way which creates huge problems in basic infrastructure and service functions such as parking and food services. The lack of such needs are met by improper solutions which causes conflicts in these zones and reduce dramatically the quality of life especially for pedestrians. The future concept should find a way to organize spaces which remind human other social values which are not measured with money, it should be also as much as natural which shows the alternative way of living for dealing consumption-based life style.

Maslak has most of the characteristics mentioned previously as CBDs. It is located at the north part of the city where the Northern Forest starts and covers the whole north part of the city until Black Sea. Additionally, ITU Ayazaga campus and the military zones have the natural life with low density settlement. Although, the surrounding areas are very green and natural, Maslak Plazas region is very artificial and far from human and nature scale. The unplanned rapid development of the area has caused the scarcity of the required infrastructure and social services. The solutions are generally insufficient and improper. One of the most crucial character is that there are limitation-filtration of people everywhere via security and turnstiles. Additionally, the functions and the spaces are very zoned and inward oriented such as the ITU Campus, Maslak Plazas Zone, the gated communities, a luxurious shopping mall, vast military barrack. Even though the variety of functions and users, everything is too much heterogenic but too far from possible-promising hybridization. The metro station is one of the critiques of the site since most of the users of the Maslak choose the metro as transportation in their daily routine. Therefore, the metro station has the real potential because it is the public space where every user meets and shares the experience together. Secondly, the variety of users is another critique point. There are the big student communities due to colleges surrounding like ITU, YTU and some private collages. There are the white collar working class of the plazas, the repairmen community in Ataturk Auto Industry, the residents living near neighborhoods both from local community of previous illegal settlements and gated communities, the shoppers and tourists visiting the shopping mall.

Conceptual Approach Today’s life is too much discrete in terms of daily activities; working, relaxing, sleeping. Most of individual’s time is spent in their occupation. Some of the people do not like working life, since they do not feel comfortable with working environment, colleagues, and the hierarchy. Too much stress and competition exist in today’s system of working life. Additionally, because of discrete specification of jobs makes people feel confused and lost. They cannot associate the things done by them with whole which is improving or contributing the humanity. The concept is strongly connected to these issues, due to the project site, Maslak which is one of the business districts of Istanbul. People need a place for relaxing, a place for spending nothing or doing nothing, contemplating, sharing, learning, being part of collectivism, remembering being human. Even though being next to each other physically, the students and office workers have nothing in common except using the same transport, the metro. Should the future involve both or think them as they are now?

The contrast between two profiles also appears in their physical environment. One is aggressive, showing the power against nature and its factors (beating the nature), covering all the surfaces with concrete-man made materials for civilizing; though the other is using modest approach, leaving natural surfaces exposed. Is the future vision a counter rejection to system? Technology provides great benefits and improvement to humanity; however, individual is becoming more and more isolated, digitally connected does not mean socially connected. One more time, one of the crucial parts of being human is social cooperation. Today’s evidences for future shows the loss of social part of individual which result in loss of meaning of life. Edward O. Wilson states in his book ‘Biophilia’ that human identity affiliate to nature (other living systems) instinctively. Today’s concrete world should transform itself into this form for human’s well-being physically and mentally rather than evaluating green architecture with certification. The future design should cooperate with other living system rather than using-consuming them.

The structure dispersing like a gas in urban tissue can counteract the system, join people, give them pleasure and well-being. Technology can provide the necessary dynamism and inter sections. The intersection of biology and technology called as synthetic biology can be the key for the future life since it involve both of the concept and hybrid them to produce the unconventional future. Water is tightly connected to both future and space itself. Maslak means water reservoir in Ottoman language since water from natural water reserves from Northern Forest was collected and distributed to the city. Additionally, the shortage of drinking water in the future is one of main topic of future debates. Both humans and living systems need water for existence. So water can be joining element for the profiles of peoples and other living forms.

Re-System The structure ‘Re-System’ is a self-functioning urban system injected/settled in a non-place where the roads surround and caused no pedestrian movement. The injection has the strong connections to the city and the urban tissue it belongs via metro tunnel, pedestrian pass on the road level and overpass bridges. The circulation through the system is connected to main receivers are the place of activity and recreation. This circulation is creating publicity in different levels such as main hall sunken at metro ticket hall level, paths and the roof level bridge. The upper structure/parasol has an organic form which is evolved to collect rain water and transmit to the underground water supply via cisterns. This structure is a continuous of surface and the ground touching points are the cisterns which carry the upper system. Under the upper structure the void is the main value. This void (semi open) has the market hall, services such as restaurants and cafes, performance space, the meditation cocoons, circulation paths. The ground of this void is an organic and continuous topography which creates/evolves necessary volumes-surfaces via topographical movements with holistic approach. In this void, closed volume functions as incubation hall which brings university and business sector together, the temporary accommodation units, the art residency and studio. The enclosure is a neutral surface contrasting with organic topography of the ground. The main hall also includes the other living systems as vertical gardens which feed the market hall; additionally, the roof has the algae farms which provide energy production. Therefore, the self-sustaining system via physical production of food and energy in the real core of the city is established next to virtual production of knowledge in incubation hall.

During the project development, sections are the main tools since the project’s typological character: the void is the main value of the space which is built by the cisterns. Continious urban surface melts the surrounding, users and the nature. One of the main design decision is having a oasis for pedestrians in the middle of the center of the city. Since the project site is surrounded by roads with weak pedestrian movement, the isolation from the road level is another main decision, the space sunks in the middle of the roads to the level of main ticket hall for strong connection to pedestrian life. Another idea is that the structure should not be lost due to the huge scale buildings surrounding. Therefore, the upper structure / parasol has an large scale creating a visual connection for the city, emphasizing the underground life below it.

Hybridization/Combination of functions, users and the pace/rhythm of the life provide the new routines, typologies and experimentation for the future. The extremes come together; fast and slow life, production and recreation, the farmer and the artist, contemplating and working, being sunken in the topography and being at the roof top, attractive and modest, day and night, natural and synthetic. 2 . Site Plan

The project located in Istanbul Technical University Maslak Campus, which is identified as ‘green campus’ with its landscape and use of bikes. An Olympic velodrome is asked as the subject of construction project. The design aims to create not just a single use sport venue but a social center via rich program. The program includes an ice ring, exhibition halls, gyms, a cafe, a bike rent&repair shop and the velodrome. The site is selected in very inclined place which provide different levels to host all the functions. The half sunken form also helped the huge volume to disappear in the topography. The raised track of the velodrome creates an experimental experience of the race since the race can be watched from tribunes or from the the ground floor. The flow of the movement for both cyclists and pedestrians is one of the crucial point of design; therefore, continuous ramps are designed all around the track. Moreover, the connection with existing bike path network of campus extends inside of the velodrome.

Project location is on German-Poland border, in southwestern Poland. The river divides the city into two :Guben (German side) and Gubin (Polish side). The city used to have densely built medieval old town fortified with city walls. However, WW II brought devestating results, %90 percent of the city were demolished. The landmark of the city, Parish Church, also ruined. After the war, some parts of the big gap in urban tissue were filled with residntial blocks in 60s. The rest was left as green space. The Parish Church was consolidated, additionally; the tower was renovated and opened as observation tower by ‘German-Polish Border Experience’. The existing state of the centre of the Czernichow: The village is quite big compared to surrounding settle-

ments. The central area is around the church; therefore the commercial functions are also located in this area. However, this central space is not well designed,; additionaly, during the Sunday ceremony this area are occupied as parking lot for people coming church by car. There is a connected space tothe center where the administriative building is present; however, this space is huge empty and not designed area for public use. Therefore, even most of the houses have their private garden, the places where people can socialize are very poor or not present. The properties in the village are generally in good condition, but there are few big structures abondoned and damaged. Additionally, due to the embankment the communication between village and the river is not present. Moreover, the village is settled on a hill, because of this there are some points that have good view of the large plain at the other side of the river. The local development plan designed by municipality can be seen in the ďŹ rst map as existing state and proposed zones. In these proposal, the residential and service areas covers very large area in comparision with existing scale of the village. Additionaly, the far settlements from the village has no public services or recreational zones.

The new proposal on Local Development Plan: The main aim is to protect the scale and the pattern of the

village, but also strengthening the spatial realtions. Therefore, the abadoned structures will be transformed into public services. The recreational and sport areas will be designed in the different parts so that people can reach them very easily. The central space will be designed in the way that answers the lack of social spaces in the village. The green areas will surround the village, so the sprawl of the village will be limited. The south west settlement is chosen for new residents because of its strong connection with production areas; therefore, economic sustainability can be provided for these new residents. This settlements also other far settlements are provided public services, sport and recreational areas and organized green areas both surrounding of the settlements and between properties. The green belt strategy is chosen for limiting the sprawl for these settlements. New industrial production zone was too large comparing with the need of the area, therefore this zone is designed smaller with the forest surrounding and limiting it. Additionally agriculture areas are extended and some farming building zones are added to them.

The existing center of the village is around the church. Commercial functions, a school and neglected large spaces are the part of this center. There is no special concern on what people can do in this space, there are just some benches in front of the church. The neglected large space is used as parking lot, especially occupied during ceremonies in the church. Additional to this area, the administriative building and empty surrounding of it are really close. Therefore, this empty surrounding of administriative building has the pottential of being public center addition to existing religious center.

As the part of design of new public center, a ramp that provides communication between existing and new center, an open air event space, a multifunctional structure that has the roofing and movable exterior walls, parking lot and a recreational area with a lake and flower gardens are designed. Due to the difference of 13 meters of levels the ramp is quite long. Therefore, several attraction points and sitting elements are arrenged on the ramp’s landings with the aim of making the ramp attractive for people to use it.

The archetype of Czernichow is quite diverse in terms of materials. However, one of the oldest and local type is that houses made of brick have basic volume.They consist of ground and roof floor. The gable roof goes along the building but not intervening side facades. Additionally, the long side of the volume is oriented parallel to the road. The project combines vernacular settlement tradition with industrial and

commercial typologies. Due to location of the project, Czernichow in South Poland, cider farm is chosen as project topic. The climate provides the suitable conditions for apple production. Poland is number 4 in world apple production list producing nearly 3 million tons. Cider also known as “Nordic Wine” due to its production and consumption in North Europe instead of wine because of the climate is chosen as production of this farm. The project location is chosen in south part of the Czernichow where the plain and embankment are; therefore,

tourists coming to cider farm can also have pleasure of nice view of the plain and the river. 192 apple trees, 3 generation farm house, 4 bedroom guest house and a cider house with production and consumption areas are designed as complex. The residence is located on the road side of the plot as continuation of existing street pattern. The volume is divided into two; one for grand-

parents and the other one for parents and children. The gap between these two volumes are connected with a roof floor for hobbies with glass envelope; and a winter garden is designed below. The facade facing to road is covered with dark bricks for giving the impression of vernacular architecture. The sides are designed as vertical gardens and wooden prisms are added as window catcher and entrance. The south facade looking to apple orchard and the river is proposed transparent for having full view and warm south sun lights. The cider house is also designed as two volumes; one for production and other for consumers. Between these two volume a street with glass roofing is placed; additionally, walking experience is enhanced with possibility to see production area, magazines and apple orchard via transparent surfaces. Moreover, 4 bedrooms guest house is designed for ones who want to stay and know about cider farms. The path going through apple orchard gives to possibility to see how the production starts from soil. This path also has connection with embankment to experience the river and the plain.

Hellastock was orginized under the Bellastock in Athens during August 2013. Participant teams were invited after an international competition about designing an emergency shelter with certain amount of certain materials. 40 international teams were selected to form an ephemeral city consist of 40 winnig design. During the workshop, the winnig designs were constructed in 1 week period by the participants themselves.

4 . Section

TR4VM4 team designed the shelter with an experimental approach. The structure creates and irregular space with inclined scaffolds which allows a empty core for living in the center. The envelope of the structure is part of protection, privacy and function itself such as storage ropes. In the core, there are several layers of transformable surfaces works as required furnitures which creates compact and multifunctional use of space.
