With uses of texture, you give your space the ability to disrupt the atmosphere, the ability to bring the outside in. Several restaurants have used nature and texture to their advantage by creating areas that appeal to all 5 senses. Located in NYC, the Wayan restaurant combines two natural elements, wood, and brick to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. This Indonesian eatery also used light to enhance the importance of the exposed brick ultimately making it one of the restaurants key elements.
Another great example would be the Quattro Passi al Pescatore located in Porto Cervo, Italy using raw stone within their space that creates a touch of contemporary luxury. The rock adds a sense of uniqueness and ultimately brings the fundamental elements of Italy’s landscape inside of the area. In both instances, the use of texture was to communicate a specific setting or culture. Although this is nothing new, it is one of the most powerful things to do when thinking of any interior space.

U nu sual April 4,2019 Although not a new concept, Europe’s first underwater restaurant is one to take a closer look at. The international architecture company Snohetta explores the Norwegian coastline with its appropriately named restaurant “Under” offers visitors an up close and personal look into sea wildlife. The company didn’t go for the cliche blues and fish decorations on the wall; instead, they went for a more modern take using muted tones that were cohesive with the ocean itself. The dining space is not huge in fact it only seats about 40 individuals. I feel that with an area as surreal as this they made a right decision by making it more intimate, the visitor needs to have a chance to take everything in, and you can’t do that with a crowd.

Ever been to a restaurant made of cardboard? Didn’t think so, restaurants are taking interior design to the next level by exploring conceptual, sustainable ideas that would otherwise seem nonfunctional. In Mumbai, India the Nude studio carefully crafted everything from the fixture to the walls out of cardboard really displaying how versatile the material really is. Cardboard alone wouldn’t stand a chance, but the designers coated the material with a wax treatment to make sure it would go unruined by the wear and tear of the cafe. Nude studio took thinking sustainably to a different level and really opened our minds to innovative ways we can use insignificant materials.

Pink nostalgia April 26,2019 Pink has reestablished itself one of the go-to colors for interior design. Why? I believe it has a lot to do with the spirit of times. Inspired by many runway trends pink has become a serious contender among vibrant colors because of the ability to create an emotional response. Pink can also be seen in a nostalgic sense, for instance, check out the pink Millennial patisserie of Poland. The designer notes that they were explicitly inspired by Marie Antoinette. The head designer notes that she wanted to imagine how her parlor would have looked in a modern day sense and they did this by paneling the walls in a soft pink velvet making that the statement of the space. They paired it with neutral and gold tones creating a very minimalistic, sophisticated setting.

What I have noticed amongst pink spaces, they are always in luxury environments. For instance, take the Candy Bar located in downtown Detroit in the Siren Hotel lobby. With elements of marble and plush velvet sitting the space gives you 1970s glam. The theme of nostalgia continues here by creating a 400-pound disco ball within an intimate space allowing it to light the whole area. The area provides a very feminine and elegant environment both intriguing to the eyes and taste buds.

April 24,2019 Re-purposing items have become a fundamental element in any design. The design world has opened its arms to recycling to create unique spaces that create a story of the past connecting it to modern day. As we see in the Bicycle Bar of Bucharest, Romania located in the historic area caters its space to exhibitions, musical sessions, workshops or any other event contemporary artists from different fields. Every feature of this space uses an old bicycle part in some form. Whether it be the handles on the chairs or the actual seats, Bicycle Bar has figured out a way to reuse dead items and bring them back to a life warmly and invitingly. Truth Cafe of Cape Town, however, creates its own world by turning their coffee shop into a steam-punk oasis.

They used every detail of old machinery and piping to communicate that something important is being made within their walls. Truth is one of the popular coffee chains in South Africa because of its quality and gorgeous interior. The design focuses around a cast iron vintage roaster drum which gives a radiant and convective heat making for stronger flavored coffee than other coffees brewed in the more common steel drums introduced in the seventies. They have mastered the art of multi-sensory design and correlating their concept directly back to their business.

This restaurant provides a fresh take on modern day dining. The Bangalore Express of London has figured out how to provide an atmosphere for two different types of guests in one space, and those are the imitate and communal guests. But first let’s discuss their use of color, we see they use colors that promote a very welcoming and open environment; however, they use geometric shapes to bring a sense of modernity. The soft green hues provide a sense of calmness and overall moves the customer’s eyes around and through the spaces in a controlled way. They then compliment this with wooden furniture and floors that ultimately tie the two eating sections together. The sitting acts as the innovative element which gives the person dining in variety.
The bunked sitting method would be for the more intimate diners who admire deem lighting and a shared small atmosphere. The large sitting area is for more communal customers who appreciate the lively atmosphere of a restaurant and hold importance to that feeling. In addition to this, they do offer private rooms that cater to smaller parties that desire a more intimate setting. So what did the Bangalore Express ultimately do? I feel they successfully designed a restaurant that services both types of diners and branches away from what we would think a traditional Indian restaurant would look like.

ANATOMY May 1,2019 a·nat·o·my the branch of science concerned with the bodily structure of humans, animals, and other living organisms, especially as revealed by dissection and the separation of parts.

This museum bar gives you an example of this very definition by putting you in a womb-like space that was designed by the late H.R Giger a Swiss set designer/artist/ sculptor best known for his work on such sci-fi flicks as Alien, Dune, Species, and Poltergeist 2. Although not resembling a specific animal, the space is made up of large, skeletal structures covered by double arches of vertebrae that crisscross the vaulted ceiling of an ancient castle.
H.R wanted to use this space to put viewers in one of his favorite sets given them a chance to view his craftsmanship first hand. The bar mastered the art of creating another world inside a space by using every element to evoke the theme. Taking extraterrestrial like experience and lacing it in a medieval cafe to first celebrate his cinematic success but then introduce the public to the art of the surrealist artist.
