RESTORED MEMORIES HOTEL SPRING 2017
THE SITE FOR THIS PROJECT WAS IN PIGEON FORGE, TENNESSEE. WE WERE ASKED TO PICK A THEME FOR THE HOTEL THAT CORRELATED WITH OUR DEMOGRAPHIC RESEARCH. AFTER RESEARCHING THE AREA I BECAME VERY INTERESTED IN THE PIGEON FORGE ARTISAN MOVEMENT, MORE SPECIFICALLY THEIR USE OF THE QUILT. THE IDEA WAS TO CREATE A SPACE USING THE SYMBOLISM AND CRAFT OF A QUILT, BY DEFINING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF A QUILT TO THE PEOPLE OF THE AREA; SYMBOLISM, IMAGERY, AND STORY TELLING. THE SYMBOLISM OF THE QUILT WILL BE RECREATED BY USING REFURBISHED AND RECYCLED MATERIALS, THIS WILL HELP TO CREATE A DEFINED IMAGERY FOR THE SPACES. ALSO, BY DRAWING FROM FAMILY VALUES, LIKE COMMUNITY, SO THE IDEA WOULD BE FOR FAMILIES TO ENJOY AND CREATE MEMORIES WITHIN THE SPACES THEN TELL THOSE STORIES. THE ORIGINAL QUILT WAS MADE USING MULTIPLE DIFFERENT MATERIALS. AS AN ATTEMPT TO NOT OVERWHELM A QUEST WITH MULTIPLE DIFFERENT MATERIALS THE SAME MATERIAL, WOOD, WAS USED FOR THE FLOOR THROUGHOUT. TO KEEP THE ESSENCE OF A QUILT, THE TYPE OF WOOD CHANGED AND THE INSTALLATION PATTERN VARIED THROUGHOUT EACH SECTION.

EVOLVING YOUTH CENTER SPRING 2017
THIS STUDIO WAS A SPONSORED BY CROSSVILLE TILE,WE WERE ASKED TO CREATE A SYSTEM THAT FEATURED ONE OF THEIR PROJECTS IN CORRELATION WITH ONE OF THE SIX SENSES. I CHOSE THE PRODUCT LINE ARGENT AND SIGHT AS THE SENSE. THE SPACE FOR THE PROJECT WAS ON CUMBERLAND AVE, NEAR THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE, AND THE IDEA FOR THE PROJECT CAME FROM LOOKING AT THE DEMOGRAPHICS OF THE CITY OF KNOXVILLE AND CHOOSING AN AT RISK YOUTH GROUP. I CHOSE TO DESIGN A SPACE FOR THE LQBTQ YOUTH OF KNOXVILLE, THE REASON BEING THAT THERE ARE NOT MANY PLACES FOR THIS GROUP IN THE STATE OF TENNESSEE. THE SPACE'S MAIN FOCUS WAS ON LEARNING. THE SPACE FEATURED A LIBRARY, READING NOOKS, GROUP STUDY SPACES, AND ONE-ONONE TUTORS. THE INCORPORATION OF THE TILE SYSTEM ACTED AS A BARRIER TO THE OUTSIDE AND WITHIN THE SPACE. IT ALLOWED THE USER TO CONTROL THE AMOUNT OF OPENNESS OR PRIVACY THEY DESIRED. SINCE THE SYSTEM HAS AN EXTREMELY HEAVY APPEARANCE THE CHOICE OF COLOR OF THE TILE BEING EXTREMELY COLORFUL WAS A PUSH TO COUNTER ACT THE HARSHNESS OF THE SYSTEM.

ULTRAVIOLET HERBARIUM FALL 2016
THIS PROJECT WAS DESIGNED ON THE SEVENTH AND EIGHTH FLOORS OF THE WHITNEY MUSEUM IN NEW YORK CITY. THE IDEA FOR THE PROJECT WAS TO CREATE AN INTERACTIVE HERBARIUM WHERE LIGHT CAN INFLUENCE THE GROWTH OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF PLANTS. EACH FLOOR FEATURED A DIFFERENT BIOME, DESERT AND TEMPERATE FOREST, AND EACH FLOOR HAS AN EXTERIOR EXHIBIT SPACE AS WELL AS INTERIOR. THERE ARE OFFICE AREAS WITH EMPLOYEES THAT SPECIALIZE IN EITHER BIOME THAT CAN ASSIST PEOPLE THAT ARE STUDYING AND INTERACTING WITH THE PLANTS. THE SYSTEM'S SHAPE WAS DERIVED FROM THE FORM AND STRUCTURE OF A BIOLUMINESCENT OCTOPUS. THIS PARTICULAR OCTOPUS BIOLUMINESCENT LIGHT CHANGED COLORS DEPENDING ON THE AMOUNT OF LIGHT ABSORBED IN THE SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT BY THE PHOTOPHORES. THE SURFACE OF THE SYSTEM WILL CHANGE COLOR DEPENDING ON THE TYPE OF ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT BEING EMITTED IN THE ATMOSPHERE. SINCE ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT IS CONSTANTLY CHANGING, THROUGHOUT THE DAY AND EVEN SEASONS, THE FABRIC COVERING THE SURFACE WILL ALSO BY CHANGING CONSTANTLY. LIGHT ENTERS THE SYSTEM THROUGH RESIN CASTED RODS THAT GO THROUGH THE SYSTEM AND THE BUILDING. THE SYSTEM ALSO ACTS AND PLANTERS IN CERTAIN AREAS.

BUSINESS EATS FALL 2015
THE IDEA FOR THIS PROJECT WAS TO CREATE A RESTAURANT IN DOWNTOWN KNOXVILLE FOR A PARTICULAR GROUP OF PEOPLE. AFTER RESEARCHING THE DEMOGRAPHICS OF THE AREA I CHOSE TO DESIGN THE RESTAURANT FOR THE BUSINESS PEOPLE OF THE AREA. THERE WAS I HITCH WITH THE DESIGN, THERE WAS NOT A KITCHEN IN THE RESTAURANT. THE RESTAURANT WOULD ALWAYS BE CATERED BY A FOOD TRUCK, WHICH ALLOWED THE ATMOSPHERE OF THE RESTAURANT TO CHANGE DEPENDING ON THE TYPE OF FOOD THAT IS BEING SERVED. TO CREATE AN ATMOSPHERE THAT COMPLIMENTED THE EVER CHANGING FOOD BROUGHT INTO AND THE AVERAGE BUSINESS PERSON WAS TO KEEP A SIMPLE COLOR PALLET AND PROVIDE PRIVACY AND NOISE BARRIERS FROM THE FOOD TRUCKS.

FURNITURE DESIGN - PROJECT ONE FALL 2017
FOR THE FIRST ASSIGNMENT IN FURNITURE DESIGN WE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO PICK A PIECE OF FURNITURE TO BUILD. WE HAD TO FIGURE OUT HOW IT WOULD BE PUT TOGETHER AND CONSTRUCT DETAILED DRAWINGS. THIS TABLE WAS CHOSEN DUE TO ITS MULTI-FUNCTIONAL PURPOSE, OF BEING A TABLE AND SHELF AND GEOMETRIC FORM. THE WOOD CHOSEN WAS HACKBERRY, BECAUSE OF THE CONTRASTING COLORS WITHIN THE WOOD OF A WARMER LIGHT YELLOW AND COOLER GRAY ACCENTS.

FURNITURE DESIGN - PROJECT TWO FALL 2017
FOR THE SECOND ASSIGNMENT IN FURNITURE DESIGN WE WERE PUT INTO GROUPS OF TWO AND ASKED TO DESIGN A D.I.Y. PROJECT, WHERE THE CLIENT WOULD BE ABLE DOWNLOAD A JOINT OR PIECE THAT COULD 3D PRINTED. THE OTHER PARTS OF THE FURNITURE PIECE HAD TO BE ABLE TO BE BOUGHT AND SIZED AT HOME DEPOT, LOWES, OR ON AMAZON. THE IDEA FOR THIS PROJECT WAS TO CREATE A DESIGN THAT COULD BE MULTI-FUNCTIONAL BASED ON WHAT THE CLIENT NEEDED. THE DESIGN FOR THIS CLASS FOCUSED ON TESSELLATION TO CREATE A UNIQUE LOOK FOR THE BASE OF TYPICAL LAZY SUSAN. THE TOTAL DESIGN CONTAINS THREE PARTS, A BASE, A CONNECTION PIECE, AND A TOP THAT FUNCTIONS AS A HANDLE AND NAPKIN HOLDER. ALL OF THESE PIECES CAN BE SCALED TO ANY SIZE THE CLIENT WOULD WANT. THE CLIENT WOULD ALSO HAVE THE OPTION TO PURCHASE JUST THE BASE OF THE LAZY SUSAN SO THAT THEY CAN CREATE A REGULAR TABLE.

THIS PROJECT WAS STILL THE “CONCEPTUAL DESIGN PHASE,” THE COMPANY WAS TRYING TO GET AN IDEA OF THE POTENTIAL OF THE SPACE. THE IDEA BEHIND THESE RENDERINGS WAS TO CREATE A VISTOR’S CENTER ALONG WITH AN EMPLOYEE ENTRANCE, THE EMPLOYEE ENTRANCE WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE EXTREMELY OBVIOUS SO THAT VISITORS WOULD NOT ACCIDENTLY ENTER THE BUILDING.
46
THE SPACE WAS INTENDED TO BE VERY INTERACTIVE WITH THE USER. ON THE INTERIOR OF THE BUILDING THERE WERE THREE MAIN FEATURES MADE FOR THE USER TO INTERACT WITH: A WALL WATER FEATURE WITH INTERACTIVE MAP WITH SMALL INFORMATION TABLETS ALONG THE BOTTOM OF THE WALL SO THAT THE USER COULD LEARN ABOUT A CERTAIN AREA ON THE MAP, AN INTERACTIVE SITE MODEL THAT WOULD BE THE CENTRAL FOCAL POINT, AND A WALL WITH A LARGE SCREEN THAT DISPLAYED A SLIDE SHOW OR MOVIE SHOWCASING THE COMPANIES’ HISTORY.
SEEN FROM THE EXTERIOR OF THE BUILDING, PLACED ALONG THE STOREFRONT WALL FEATURES AN LED SCREEN THAT DISPLAYS THE COMPANIES’ LOGO, IMAGES, AND FUTURE EVENTS THEY ARE HOLDING AND HOSTING. ANOTHER IDEA FOR THE BUILDING WAS TO KEEP IT AND THE INTERIOR VERY FLUID AND ORGANIC IN ITS SHAPE. THE INTERIOR SPACE MIMICKED THIS THROUGH THE CIRCULATION OF THE SPACE, BY KEEPING IT VERY OPEN AND MINIMAL AND USING MORE ORGANIC AND SEAMLESS PIECES OF FURNITURE. THE MATERIALS USED WERE CONNECTED TO THE AREA IN WHICH IT IS BUILT. RENDERED WHILE WORKING WITH McCARTY HOLSAPLE McCARTY.
