RAUL DIAZ b. 1952, Cordoba Argentina
Since the days of his first exhibitions in the early 1980s, artist Raul Diaz has shown an inclination towards expressing himself through the utilization of figures – typically human ones. Diaz’s highly textured surfaces reveal images of boats, kites, roses, and shells amid peaceful figures. Evoked by the artist’s memories of his childhood, these mysterious images are deeply personal, yet they provide a comfortable place where we all may recollect our own family histories and consider the future.
Diaz’s treatment of the human figure is based more on an ethereal conception rather than naturalistic representation. The human figures which appear in his works are planar, out of scale, seen from behind, in unrealistic attitudes and postures that seem somewhat forced, on account of their singularity. These primitive depictions evoke a calming sense of simplicity and represent what Diaz is recognized for as an artist. His paintings, executed on wood panels, are distinctly characteristic due to his use of mixed mediums, which result in a texture of tactile qualities resembling ample relief work.
In a world where each day becomes more complex and troubled, the works of Raul Diaz seem to invite us to seek refuge in the secret universe that exists within each of us – a soothing, friendly space characterized by the presence of beauty and the possibility of solitude and personal soul searching – which, the whirlwind of contemporary life barely allows time to surface.
