MEETING PLACE The meeting place of Eric Aho’s exhibition extends from the eponymously titled painting of a high alpine meadow, bathed in sunlight, opening to the view of a distant ridgeline. Bringing to mind the specific arrangement of time and location, a meeting place carries the expectation for interaction. Aho’s work skillfully exposes these encounters, allowing the imagery to depart from reality and enter a world of its own. Meeting Place, like the other works on view, reveals the point where the representational and the abstract, the observed and the invented, merge in Aho’s painting. These works reflect the sentiments of the Finnish writer Pentti Saarikoski and are, “not so much of the world and its places as they are explorations of places and their worlds.” In this regard, each painting in the exhibition becomes the place and we meet it, encountering it as we might any element of nature – they have become one and the same. After studying at the Central School of Art and Design in London, Eric Aho received his BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. In 1989, he participated in the first exchange of scholars between the U.S. and Cuba in over thirty years. Aho completed his graduate work at the Lahti Art Institute in Finland supported by a Fulbright Fellowship in 1991–92 and an American-Scandinavian Foundation grant in 1993. His paintings have been exhibited and collected widely in the United States and abroad. Since his earliest projects, Aho has joined historical research, personal inquiry, and a close reading of the landscape together with reverie and delight in experiencing the natural world reinvigorating what it means to paint the landscape today. Eric Aho lives and works in Saxtons River, Vermont. This is his first solo exhibition at Tayloe Piggott Gallery.
