THIS CATALOGUE COMPLEMENTS THE EXHIBITION AT TAYLOE PIGGOTT GALLERY FEATURING CELIA GERARD WORKS ON PAPER . © TAYLOE PIGGOTT GALLERY / CELIA GERARD 19
CELIA GERARD Celia Gerard’s work is an investigation of depth and space on a two-dimensional surface. Abstract compositions are built on geometric foundations of linear marks that may be subtle or bold but always decisive. There is a dynamic play in her work between improvisation and certitude, which results in a poetic equilibrium of form and emotional content. In this exhibition, the new works on paper are evocative of transcendental landscapes. Her geometry appears to be not just mathematically based, but derived from nature with the land and sky figuring prominently. Each piece is grounded by these organic shapes, with strong linear forms that reach for the sky, calling into mind urban architecture or a mountain landscape. Gerard has created a new space for us to travel through that is simultaneously unknown and familiar in our unconscious. Gerard’s malleable process of adding and subtracting layers creates a sense of depth, while the use of multiple medias and tonal variations contribute to infinite possibilities within each piece. She uses a variety of dry materials, including graphite, charcoal, and chalk, as well as her own handmade watercolors. Additionally, Gerard manipulates the surface through erasing and sanding, creating and revealing multiple layers in space. This gives her work an ethereal yet supremely modern, abstract feel. Born in Washington, DC, Celia Gerard received her BA with honors in Art and Art History from Colgate University, her EdM from Harvard University, and her MFA in Sculpture from the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture. Solo exhibitions include Tayloe Piggott Gallery, Jackson, WY; Sears-Peyton Gallery, New York, NY and The Mark Potter Gallery at the Taft School, CT. Her work has been included in numerous group exhibitions, including the National Academy Museum, New York, NY; Lori Bookstein Gallery, New York, NY; Sears-Peyton Gallery, New York, NY; Tayloe Piggott Gallery, Jackson, WY; Sideshow Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; The New York Studio School, New York, NY; Gutman Library, Harvard University, MA; Lacoste Gallery, Lacoste, France. Awards and grants include the S.J. Wallace Truman Fund Award for graphics from the National Academy Museum; Artist-in-residence, the New York Studio School; Seligman/ Von Simpson award for excellence in sculpture; LCU foundation grant; sculpture fellowship from the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. She has taught at Swarthmore College, Bard College, Centenary College, the New York Studio School and currently teaches at Pratt Institute, the School of Visual Arts and Columbia University.
