CELIA GERARD Oceans and sky, mountains and horizon: varying perspectives alter the geometry of each piece by Celia Gerard. Imaging an ariel view, circles and squares divide the fields below. There is an investigation of depth in her works on paper and sculpture which relies on vantage point. Combining aspects of the exterior and the interior, her work evokes architectural and natural forms. Gerard’s artistic practice evolves deliberately and intuitively, steadfastly continuing to explore spatial relationships and compositional harmony. Embracing a wide range of methodologies and materials, Celia Gerard works with a limited palette. Each tone, each new hue, is introduced with intention. This collection of work was developed through her interest in the expressive content and expansive variations of the color blue. Gerard seamlessly continues her investigation in paper, bronze, and ceramic; developing a dialogue between three separate languages. While her work prioritizes drawing and structure, color plays an important role in making the compositions cohesive while also engaging with her ever evolving influences, both historical and contemporary. Celia Gerard received her BA with Honors in Art and Art History from Colgate University, her MFA in Sculpture from the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting And Sculpture and her EdM from Harvard University. Gerard has exhibited regularly with solo shows at Sears-Peyton Gallery, Tayloe Piggott Gallery, Mark W. Potter Gallery, New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture and in group exhibitions held at the National Academy Museum, Lori Bookstein Fine Art, Sideshow Gallery, Lohin-Geduld Gallery; I-20 Gallery, Gutman Library, Harvard University, and the Coolidge Center for the Arts. She has held teaching positions at Bard College, Swarthmore College, Pratt Institute, the New York Studio School, Columbia University and the School of Visual Arts. Gerard lives and works in New York, NY.
