I should like to paint the reality that lurks in landscape, to uncover in speculation about landscape the secrets and patterns of the planet, and to know that landscape is the container of gods — Lee Hall, 1982
Painting for Lee Hall is a way of life – a philosophical existence. By bringing out what is internal, in to her painting, she creates a new lens through which to view the natural world. She doesn’t dare paint a “landscape” but she is able to extrapolate from nature – a moment in time – and translate that into a painting that is all about color, form, and structure.
As a stalwart and inner circle member of the second generation of abstract expressionists, Lee Hall came to prominence in the 1960s and early 1970s, exhibiting side by side with Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and many of the other abstract expressionists at the Betty Parsons Gallery in New York City. Having become disillusioned with the gallery scene and the concept of selling works of art, Lee Hall turned to academia while continuing to paint daily for herself. Hall has recently decided to exhibit her work again, for the first time since 1981, in conjunction with the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art in Charlotte, North Carolina. Tayloe Piggott Gallery has been chosen to represent the work of Lee Hall in the western mountain region.
