The VAAS series integrates rare and ancient naturally occurring materials such as fossilized dinosaur bone with extraterrestrial elements of the universe seen with the inclusion of meteorite specimen. Each work is handcrafted in New York City with sustainable materials sourced globally through partnerships with local artisans.

Key pieces, comprised of personal objects, writing instruments, necklaces, earrings, rings and bracelets, explore the dichotomy of terrain and spatiality through geometric vessels, delicately outlining sculptures of the earth and the cosmos. The result is a dialogue between organic forms juxtaposed with manipulated refracted dimensions and orientations of recycled metals to highlight space and structure. Monique Péan philosophizes the limitations, or lack thereof, of time itself, highlighting materials that subvert the circadian perception of temporality. This theme is most notably explored in works featuring pyritized dinosaur bone, a unique fossil whose genesis is contingent on extremely rare variables that yield a mirrored lucence on the specimen’s surface, thus physically encapsulating a synchronic moment of a distant past 150 million years ago. Such pieces operate as portals through time and space, an escape reinforced by Péan’s architectural forms that encourage one to explore the relationships between structure, topography, temporality and space.
