Above the couch in our living room hangs a large brown canvas. If you walk past it quickly, you might not make out what’s there. But if you stop. If you stand back and take a moment, the image reveals itself: a river, a sky, a wall of tall buildings bearing witness. But that’s not what you will remember when you walk away. Instead, you will conjure the longing you experienced. Experience still. Late at night, as you plead to an indifferent moon. Maybe that’s Kathryn’s purpose, to allow us, through her art, to forget words for a little while. To stand eyes wide, mouth slightly open, and notice that there, in what first appears to be deep blue nothingness, is a lighthouse. Feel the sand beneath your feet. Hear the call of seagull. It’s okay to miss him. The you that you were. Kite in hand. The mom that she was. Just to the side. Always nearby. Kathryn’s art falls in the space between sentences. White: The sound of snowfall. A still world. Absent of dirt. Which is equally important as the words on the page. Grey: A cumbersome wind on water. Angry yet unassuming. Because it is the absence with which our thoughts linger. Green: A promise. Tentative perhaps. But real. As promises almost always are. So take your time as you explore this body of work. Kathryn’s paintings are a slow, tranquil beauty. Quiet but relentless. Lasting. Human.
