DONALD BAECHLER Donald Baechler (b. 1956) examines our relationship to visual language as well as the cultural construction of representation in his layered compositions and sculptures. Throughout his prominent career, he has remained committed to a universal, animated aesthetic with particular emphasis on quality of line, form, and balance. Baechler is celebrated and internationally recognized for addressing the unique language of cultural symbols throughout his work, and has long experimented with a variety of forms and materials to maintain what he calls a “gee-wiz” approach to creating art. His pieces typically include a central iconic image that interact and engage with assorted collaged and painted background elements to imply simple, childlike visual connections that harness both innocence and sophistication. Baechler was born in Hartford, Connecticut. He attended the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore, MD from 1974-1977, Cooper Union in New York, NY from 1977-1978, and Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Frankfurt, Germany from 1978-1979. His work has been recently exhibited at Cheim & Reid in New York, NY, McClain Gallery in Houston, TX, and Lars Bohman Gallery in Stockholm, Sweden. He is included in the public collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, NY as well as the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, CA, the Philadelphia Museum of Art in Philadelphia, PA, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA. He currently lives and works in New York, NY.
