Have your say on plan for new £19m leisure centre By George Welch VISIONS of how a £19million leisure facility for Wantage and Grove might look have been unveiled. The fi rst plans and 3D images were revealed as Vale of White Horse District Council launched the public consultation for the centre. Council chiefs want the public’s help to shape how the centre would look as officers stress the graphics are just early stage concepts. With up to 5,000 new homes to be built in Wantage and Grove by 2031, the Vale has earmarked land for the complex between the two, next to Wantage Health Centre north of Mably Way. Speaking at the fi rst public consultation at Wantage Leisure Centre last Thursday, Ben Border, project officer at the Vale, said there was lots of interest in the initial plans. “The fact that a new facility is being brought forward before the homes being built is possibly the biggest plus [so far],” he added. The site has been chosen due to the strategic location between housing developments and to cater for the increased demand for leisure facilities. Doctors at the health centre’s two practices have previously defeated plans for a new care home on part of the land to protect space for their

An early stage concept image of how the new leisure centre could look own expansion and this remains a concern for some residents. An elderly couple, who didn’t want to be named but have lived in the area for nearly 50 years, said: “It’s interesting but they need to ensure that it doesn’t occupy the space designated for possible expansion of the health centre. “The centre is desperately needed but it needs to be bigger than this for the simple reason it’s going to cover a lot more people coming into it. “It’s a very good location because you have Wantage one side and Grove the other.” The new centre will be funded entirely by the Vale upfront but ‘significant’ developer contributions
will be used towards the cost. Cllr Charlotte Dickson, the authority’s cabinet member for leisure, said: “The new leisure centre is great news for everyone in Wantage, Grove and the surrounding area. “Our aim is to open the new centre in 2020, this will help to ensure we have facilities in place well ahead of many people moving into the new homes and can meet demand as and when it increases.” A second exhibition will be held at the Old Mill Hall in Grove on Thursday, September 21, from 3pm to 8pm. People can also give their views at tinyurl.com/yachc9f4 by October 4.
