Ready to do battle over 85 homes plan for cul-de-sac By Samantha McGregor
walking area for all residents. “This will be greatly missed if this development goes ahead. A major increase in traffic is one of the many concerns, as a result of this proposed development.” Persimmon says the triangleshaped piece of land is 2.58 hectares in size and represents an opportunity to provide a “sustainable extension” to the existing development at Fleet Meadow. It said the development will include up to 40 per cent affordable housing and new public open space including a children’s play area. In its design and access statement, Persimmon said the application should be considered as South Oxfordshire District Council does not have a fiveyear housing land supply. It comes after developments at Winterbrook in Wallingford, Chinnor and most recently Thames Farm in Shiplake, were approved on appeal by planning inspectors.
CONTROVERSIAL plans to build dozens of new homes next to a quiet cul-de-sac have been submitted. Residents are furious over Persimmon Homes’ proposal to build up to 85 homes on agricultural land at the end of St Hughs Rise, in Didcot. They have set up an action group, Save St Hughs Rise, in a bid to fight the plans. The group has handed out flyers, put up posters and taken to social media to urge people to object to the planning application. Concerns raised include an increase in traffic, loss of view of open fields, fears the development could set a precedent and lead to more housing at the site and that there are better locations for housing in the town. Posting on Facebook, Tracy Maynard said: “I’ve lived here just over 20 years. I’ve seen people come & go but it’s always been nice & quiet.
