Vicious attack leaves man wary of going out at night Victim went to the aid of wheelchair-bound friend who was being assaulted By Adam Flinn A MAN in a wheelchair and his friend who were assaulted in a late night brawl in Newbury town centre have been left “scared and wary” of going out in the town again. Matthew Greenwood, 21, and his 24-year-old friend Scott Taylor were assaulted by an unknown man following a night out in Newbury towards the end of last month. Scott had to be taken to hospital after being knocked out by the offender when he rushed to the aid of Matthew, who has cerebral palsy and has to use a wheelchair. It happened in The Wharf at around 3am on July 30 after they had fi rst encountered the man in the Document House bar in Wharf Street. Scott is now on the mend, and has spoken about what happened that night. He said: “The offender was taking the mick out of Matt, who’s in a wheelchair, and he was doing that throughout the night. “My other friend who was with
us went up to him and the man said something about benefit fraud, so she said ‘you’re not worth my time, let’s just go’. “And as we were at the kebab van eating our food he started shouting at us, so Matt started shouting back – he’d just had enough by then.” Scott recalled how the man and Matt got into a fight, with Matt falling out of his wheelchair and both of them ended up rolling around on the floor. He said he then rushed over to try and break them up, but the man got up and punched and then kicked him in the head, causing Scott to lose consciousness. Scott continued: “Apparently I was unconscious for about four minutes and then I got rushed off to hospital. “I’ve been out in Newbury for God knows how many weekends since I was 18, and I’ve never once got involved in anything like this, so I was very shocked. “Matt’s very scared to even go down the shop at the moment.
