Thousands sign petition amid fears for sports centre’s future By Eva Astreinidou MORE than 3,700 people have backed a petition urging the council to save a sports centre in Basingstoke. Its supporters fear a large hotel with gym facilities which is to be built nearby threatens the future of the centre. The group behind the petition says the plans could mean a loss of nearly three quarters of a million pounds in revenue a year for the centre run by charity, the Basingstoke Sports Trust. The online petition reads: “We need your support now to ensure the community facilities of Basingstoke Sports Centre are available for generations to come.” It adds: “Up to 23 per cent of our health and fitness membership could be displaced and that the impact on the charity’s income could be as high as £800,000 per year. This would lead to the winding up of the charity; the closure of Basingstoke Sports Centre, and the loss of all that it adds to the town.” Plans for the leisure hotel at Basing View, which were agreed in October 2016, include 153 rooms, a pub, restaurant, Starbucks coffee shop, meeting and events facilities and a gym with heated swimming pool. Commenting on the petition, Will Clarke said: “BSC is a jewel in the Basingstoke crown and should be valued and cared for.” Labour councillor Paul Harvey said: “The Village Hotel model is based on a leisure/fitness offer that will undercut

The council aren’t listening, all they seem to care about is the property deal.” But communities councillor Simon Bound said the council has always valued the work of the centre, supporting it with £3.5million of funding since 2000 and £1.6m in annual grants. He added: “It is important we strive to bring new opportunities to the borough that will result in more jobs and a wider offer to residents and businesses. “The council has worked hard to ensure a good deal for the borough, rather than an annual rent Village Hotels will pay an upfront multi-million pound figure and will also invest £19million, create 134 construction jobs per year of the 16-month build. “When open, the hotel will create 120 direct jobs and a further 25 jobs. “I encourage the sports centre to work with us and I encourage those people who have signed the petition to continue to support the sports centre.” To sign the petition, visit https:// tinyurl.com/y92n26rz

By Eva Astreinidou CASH-STRAPPED Basingstoke Town could continue playing at the Camrose following delays to their plans to move to a new ground. A delay in the new state of the art artificial grass pitch could mean Town’s fi rst team will continue to play at the Camrose for the fi rst half of the 2018/19 season, with the owners’ approval. Subject to planning permission, the pitch at the Winklebury ground would not be ready for use by the community club and the wider community until towards the end of 2018. This comes as club supporters have been working to raise £9,200 out of a
£20,000 target to maintain the squad. Members of the community club responsible for arranging the sale of the Camrose Ground heard about progress in the proposed move to Winklebury at a meeting last week. Community club secretary Steve Williams said all signs were positive about the move to Winklebury and that the delay should be seen as an opportunity to maximise fundraising before the move. Basingstoke Town went into community ownership towards the end of last year when former chairman Rafi Razzak decided to end his involvement with the club. It was then announced the Camrose will be sold off for redevelopment with
potential for housing. Club chairman Steve Letch praised the community club for its work in unlocking the potential of a new ground in the town, when once its future didn’t go beyond ground sharing with Farnborough. He said: “Looking forward, the challenge is not just to maintain and enhance our fundraising but to broaden support across the community and attract more volunteers who can give whatever help they can.” The community club board will continue to formulate plans for Winklebury, including the provision of a club house. If you are interested in volunteering, contact stewill@hotmail.co.uk.

One male is described as wearing a 3/4 length coat and dark trousers and another, a light coloured hoody and dark trousers. On the same night, a van parked on Winchester Street was broken into and items worth up to £5,000 were stolen between 12.03am and 12.08am.
CCTV shows a small hatchback vehicle parked opposite. Three males got out and broke into the van using a bar, damaging the lock. All three were wearing masks. One is said to be large and chunky and the other two slender. Finally, between 5.30pm and 9am, a van in Pond Close had a window smashed though no items were stolen from inside the vehicle. If you can help, call 101.

NEARLY £480,000 will be given to projects to help keep communities in Basingstoke safer. The funding will boost 16 projects including Basingstoke Street Pastors, who walk the streets offering help and fi rst aid to those in need, and Youth Options, who respond to anti-social behaviour hotspot areas. Another to benefit is SSAFA Hampshire, which prevents reoffending through the provision of secure housing and debt advice. Police and Crime Commissioner Michael Lane announced on Tuesday that 64 grants totalling £1,365,774 will be distributed across organisations in Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Portsmouth and Southampton. The commissioner received 160 applications for the safer communities fund, which aims to support victims and help prevent offending. Mr Lane said: “My team and I have had an extraordinary number of applications, many to the highest standard, revealing the level of unmet demand to support vulnerable people in our communities. “Supporting victims, protecting the vulnerable, reducing offending are an absolute priority and sit appropriately alongside enabling effective operational policing.” An additional grants round will take place shortly for funding to begin in October.

Dentist banned from practising over fee refund By Eva Astreinidou A BASINGSTOKE dentist has been banned from practising for eight months after refusing to give a dead patient’s family a refund. James Kleiber, medical director at Glenholme Dental Centre, in Chequers Road, appeared before the General Dental Council last month to answer allegations of misleading conduct. Claims were made against Mr Kleiber after he failed to refund a portion of the fee paid by the patient for work that was not completed as a result of her death. The patient had reportedly paid £10,450 in advance for the work in January 2015 but when the patient died five months later the family asked for a refund. The report from the GDC said Mr Kleiber’s subsequent communications with the family were “misleading and dishonest” while the dentist claimed the work had been completed. During the hearing, committee members were presented with evidence in which Mr Kleiber claimed he had confused the patient in question with another one of his patients.
But the report noted that “it is not plausible that you confused Patient A with another patient as you maintain”. The report read: “Your dishonest conduct was repeated and sustained over a period of some months and involved the making of false statements to the family of Patient A and the solicitors acting on their behalf.” The report added: “The evidence that you have submitted suggests that you continue to lack insight into conduct which relates to repeated dishonest statements and a lack of integrity. “The committee considers that your fellow professionals, and indeed the public, would view these serious departures from acceptable standards of conduct and behaviour to be deplorable.” But the GDC noted the dentist’s conduct was out-of-character saying it had received “positive testimonials” on his behalf from colleagues and patients. It added: “It is clear that you are a well-regarded and valued practitioner. You have also demonstrated the beginnings of some insight into your misconduct and have taken some steps towards remediation.”

Mr Cobden denies the charge. The trial continues.

Gerry’s 160-mile challenge A BASINGSTOKE employee has set out to run nearly 160 miles this year, all while wearing a traditional Scottish kilt. Gerry Dooner ran his second half marathon of the year this month, as part of a challenge to run 12 half marathons during 2018. As part of the challenge, the IT analyst for foodservice provider Bidfood will be running each race wearing a kilt as part of his bid to raise money for Age UK and the Southampton Chil-
dren’s Hospital Charity. Scotsman Gerry said: “Age UK is a charity incredibly close to my heart so it was important to me to give back. “I also chose to support the Southampton Children’s Hospital Charity to give back to those children that sadly are unable to enjoy a normal, carefree childhood.” As well as running 12 half marathons, Gerry has also organised a variety of fundraising activities throughout the year.
THE man found dead in a park in South Ham has been named as the police investigation into his death continues. Police have named the man as Jason Williams, of St Peter’s Road, South Ham. A post-mortem-examination has confi rmed the 41-year-old was killed by a single stab wound to the chest. Mr Williams’ next-of-kin are being supported by specialist officers. Officers were called to Russell Howard Park at 1.21am on Tuesday following reports of a body being found. Detective Chief Inspector Dave Storey said: “We are working hard to try and fi nd out who is responsible for this serious crime. “I am appealing for anyone who has any information which may help my investigation, to get in touch.” Call 101 quoting reference Operation Dance.
Former surgery to be affordable homes Celebrating our A VACANT doctor’s surgery in Basingstoke will be transformed into affordable family homes. Land owned by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council has been sold on to progress plans to develop five two-storey houses on the site of the former Paddock Road surgery. The former surgery in South Ham has been relocated to premises at the nearby St Andrew’s Centre and the building, which was no longer fit for purpose, was
demolished to make way for the housing. Sovereign Housing Association, which now owns the land, hopes to meet the growing need for housing. Head of development at Sovereign, Stuart Roberts said: “We’re really pleased that by working in partnership with Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, we’ll soon be able to see work start on this redundant site to transform it into five new affordable homes.” Borough councillor Terri Reid
99%
said: “I’m delighted that our work with Sovereign has resulted in the creation of new housing opportunities for this piece of vacant land in South Ham. We look forward to seeing the new homes becoming occupied by local families and the site thriving once again. “Many local people need a helping hand to buy their own homes and it is important we do what we can to generate the right type of housing to meet this growing need.”

New station the jewel in the crown of fire service
Electric Garage Doors Winter Sale
By Eva Astreinidou FIREFIGHTERS celebrated the start of a new chapter at the official opening of a £6million fire station in Basingstoke. The new building boasts increased vehicle capacity, an enhanced training facility, and improved access enabling quicker response times. Chief Fire Officer Neil Odin said: “This is a modern station for a modern era. It will be of benefit to the people of Basingstoke and the county as a whole. “I am sure that this building – as the previous one – will have a special place in the heart of the town.” Based on the original West Ham Close site, it has taken two years to build after the old facility, built in the 1960s, was demolished. Basingstoke station manager Keith Jones, who joined Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service 25 years ago as a fi refighter, said the event marked a ‘historic period’ for the town. Hampshire Fire and Rescue Authority chairman councillor Chris Carter said: “This prestigious event marks the dawn of a new age of fi refighting - and a new era for the service. “The bespoke training facilities and focus on community engage-

four members of the Community Safety team. It also has three fi re engines, an aerial ladder platform, a response support vehicle, a command vehicle and a small fi res vehicle. There are plans to allow community groups to use the station in the near future.
Love for the lizard on Valentine’s Day VALENTINES Day’s was a little unusual for hundreds of people who went to meet a variety of creatures in Hook. As part of half term last week, Hook community centre hosted wildlife experts who shared their knowledge on animals and conservation work. One of the stars of the day was Safari Pete, an animal expert who brought in a variety of animals and shared fun wildlife facts. The children visiting the centre got the chance to meet a lizard, a small crocodile, a tarantula, frog, and meerkats as well as enjoying competitions and an animal hunt, while exploring information stalls by a variety of wildlife groups. Hook village halls volunteer Sue Hinton said: “It was a super day. It was great to see so many people having fun and enjoying their community centre on a dull, wet day in February.” All proceeds from the event will go to The Base and Hook In Bloom.

It is a truth... Austen is one of best-loved authors in the world THE life-size bronze sculpture of Basingstoke’s much-loved author was paid a visit by the country’s culture minister. Margot James MP was welcomed by Basingstoke MP Maria Miller and together they went to see the Jane Austen sculpture which takes prides of place in Market Square. Unveiled in the town last year by local sculptor Adam Roud, the statue marks 200 years since the Hampshire author’s death. Mrs Miller, who worked with the Hampshire Cultural Trust to bring the project to fruition, said: “Jane Austen is a writer of worldwide repute. Born in the borough, she is a woman who
broke the mould in her generation. “It is a fitting tribute to her status not just as a local writer, but as one of the fi nest and most-loved authors the world has known.” She added: “Basingstoke is delighted to make sure Jane is recognised not only in the borough but celebrates being home to the fi rst sculpture of this world famous writer.” Ms James said: “It was wonderful to see this beautiful sculpture – it is so fitting to see this author’s life captured in a lasting memorial.” Austen was born in 1775 in Steventon, just a few miles outside Basingstoke, where she wrote the fi rst draft of Pride and Prejudice.

Garden to mark centenary of war By Eva Astreinidou BASINGSTOKE is to get its own Peace Garden to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War. The garden, which will cost nearly £70,000, is set to open to the public on September 21, to commemorate the International Day of Peace. The plans, which were unveiled last week, include a circular paved space with a water feature and seating, surrounded by newly-planted trees, foliage and flowers, in the corner of War Memorial Park close to the aviary. Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council has been supporting the Peace Garden Advisory Group, made up of volunteers, since 2014 to develop
the community garden as a lasting celebration of peace and reconciliation. Cllr Robert Tate said they were delighted the garden would be going ahead. He said: “The War Memorial Park will provide a perfect setting for such a garden, which will complement the existing landscape and facilities within the park. “The project has attracted great support from local organisations and individuals and provides a focus for on-going community celebration of peace and reconciliation. “I look forward to the borough marking International Day of Peace with the opening of the peace garden. It will then be ready in time for the commemoration of the end of the First
The Peace Garden project team with the design for the scheme World War in November.” The council’s Local Infrastructure Fund will provide £40,000 towards the project, to supplement the £23,667 already received from developer con-
tributions and public donations. In addition, the Rooksdown Club is donating £5,000 and commissioning a sculptured bust to commemorate the work of Sir Harold Gillies, who pioneered facial plastic surgery for wounded servicemen during both world wars, which will be put in the garden. Sir Harold was based at Rooksdown House, part of Park Prewett Hospital in Basingstoke, where he operated on injured soldiers and trained other doctors in plastic surgery. John Lewis Partnership has also donated £885 through its Community Matters scheme in which customers of the Basingstoke store vote for their favourite community project.

Beaufort Financial director and Ark supporter Mark Dolby, left, and Ark Cancer Centre Charity director of fundraising and communications Mark Jones, right, get ready to give Beaufort’s Sam Tait a helping hand as he gears up to train for this year’s Arkriders’ Basingstoke to Bournemouth bike ride taking place on July 14-15

Bespoke fundraising for charity A CANCER charity received a hattrick of endorsement to help push it towards a £5million target. The team at Beaufort Financial announced earlier this month it will be once again support Ark Cancer Centre Charity’s mission to raise the funds towards a trailblazing cancer treatment centre in Basingstoke. It’s the third year in a row the Beaufort Financial team have backed Ark – and several members of staff have played key roles in the
charity’s fundraising campaign which has so far hit £1.8m. Some employees have taken part in half-marathons and fundraising cycle rides – including JOGLE16 (John O’Groats to Land’s End) and the Ark to Arc ride – which have collectively raised more than £100,000 for Ark. Beaufort financial director Mark Dolby, who was inspired to support the charity after losing members of his family to cancer, said the team is delighted to be supporting Ark
for a third year. He said: “We look forward to continuing to make a difference in 2018 as we raise more funds for, and awareness of, Ark’s campaign.” Ark’s trustee Merv Rees said: “I am delighted and grateful that [the team] have chosen to back the charity again in 2018.” The new centre will largely be funded by Hampshire hospitals foundation trust (HHFT), and it will most likely be built on the existing Basingstoke hospital site.

SERVICEWOMEN celebrated their ‘trailblazing’ RAF predecessors who paved the way for future generations. A team of seven female personnel from RAF Odiham joined veterans at a celebration of 100 years of women in the RAF last week. The group gave a presentation to the former WAAF (Women’s Auxiliary Air Force) and WRAF (Women’s Royal Air Force) members at Princess Marina House, a care centre run by the RAF Benevolent Fund on the West Sussex coast. The day, which culminated in a special gala, was the highlight in a week of activities to celebrate 100 years of women in the Armed Forces. Sergeant Audrey Burleigh, who was part of the group from RAF Odiham, said: “We are delighted to be part of these celebrations. Many of the women served during the Second World War and were the trailblazers of their generation, paving the way for women, like me, who serve today. “Within the RAF all roles are now open to women and it is thanks to the determination of
Personnel from RAF Odiham met some of their predecessors in West Sussex veterans like these WAAFs and WRAFs that we stand here today.” Women began serving in the RAF towards the end of the First World War, when the Women’s Royal Air Force was formed in 1918. The service was disbanded in 1920, after the end of hostilities. When war broke out again in 1939, the WAAF was created with a limit to the roles women could apply for. In 1941, the height of the Second World War, women were conscripted into the service, which
grew to more than 180,000 personnel at its peak. WAAF later became WRAF, before the two services, the RAF and WRAF were formally merged in 1994. Ann Simons, a former WRAF nurse who served during the 1970s, said: “I totally enjoyed my time in the air force. I think this week is marvellous and I have already made a couple of friends. “It is absolutely beautiful here, I love being by the sea. They treat you so well here.”
Singer makes it through to TV show final A SINGER/SONGWRITER from Basingstoke is a step closer to winning £50,000 after impressing judges on a BBC One singing contest. Jodie Steele, who has starred in shows such as Wicked and Legally

from all over the UK. Jodie wowed the judges with her rendition of I Wanna Dance With Somebody by Whitney Houston. She has been put straight into the fi nal which will air on BBC One on March 3.

Rescuing animals from wildfires By Eva Astreinidou A HAMPSHIRE firefighter who helped rescue horses and evacuate llamas during unprecedented wildfires in California has returned home. Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service watch manager Jim Green spent the last year working with fi re rescue in the US and got more than he bargained for. He was there to train with US authorities and work alongside veterinary teams to exchange knowledge on animal rescue procedures. The 44-year-old father of two worked closely with the UC Davis Fire Dept and spent time with Station 2 Sacramento, one of the busiest in California receiving 6,600 calls on average each year. He added: “The year abroad has given me experience of being involved in planning for, and participating in, major incidents of a scale you rarely get in the UK. During the year abroad California
experienced one of the wettest winters on record, which led to 200,000 people being evacuated due to fears of a breach of the Oroville Dam. Mr Green also experienced one of the hottest summers which led to some of the most devastating wildfi res in the state’s history scorching more than 1.3 million acres and, subsequently, deadly mudslides. He said: “The effects of these fi res were devastating and at the centre of the activity was a huge animal need with injury, displacement and welfare needs that became more evident as time went on. “First responders, veterinarians and volunteer rescue groups worked for days to provide assistance to human and animal victims of the northern California fi res. In his time in California, he created an animal rescue response team within the UC Davis Fire Department and delivered training to veterinarians, technical rescue teams and the other fi re departments.
He also commissioned research while working at the University of California, prompting a new way of keeping
PyeongChang Winter Olympics, including alpine skier Laurie Taylor from Basingstoke. County councillor Andrew Gibson said: “Hampshire has a strong sporting heritage, with many exceptional sportsmen and women living in the county. We know from speaking to them how much of a difference HTAS has made to their sporting careers,

Number of first-time buyers hits 10-year high More people are getting on the property ladder than at any time since 2007, with 359,000 fi rst-time buyers making a purchase in 2017. New figures from Halifax reveal a sharp increase from the 339,600 people who bought their fi rst home in 2016 and show 2017 levels were only just short of the 2007 peak of 359,900. The average fi rst-time purchase is now worth £278,749 compared with £78,855 ten years ago, while the age of an average fi rst-time buyer has risen from 29 to 31 in the same period. Antony Gibson, Sales Managing Director at Romans, says: “Market conditions have become significantly more favourable for fi rst-time buyers in the last year and this is reflected in a sharp increase in the number of people buying their fi rst home. “The government’s decision to scrap stamp duty for fi rst purchases
By Romans Group of up to £300,000 has reduced the cost of getting on the ladder by thousands of pounds and made it a more realistic prospect for a huge number of people. “In addition, low mortgage rates, high employment and Help to Buy have all supported young people in getting on the ladder. As such, I expect the trend for rising numbers of fi rst-time buyers to continue through 2018 and beyond. “First-time buyers are incredibly important to the overall housing market as they allow existing owners to sell up and take their second step. Despite a lack of supply, the fact fi rst-time buyers are increasing in number is extremely positive.” For more information or advice on getting on the property ladder contact your local Romans branch on 01344 985 666.

IT’S not often you see birds on stage in a theatre and even more rare to see one flying over the audience. But Our Life with Birds promises to give audiences an opportunity to meet Golden Eagles, Peregrine Falcons, hawks, owls, starlings and many more - all raised and trained with the utmost loving care by Lloyd and Rose Buck. Over the last 25 years, the couple have devoted their lives to taking care of birds and mastering the art of capturing them on film. The pair have worked with a number of high profile wildlife presenters including Sir David Attenborough, Steve Backshall, Bear Grylls, Michaela Strachan, Chris Packham, and Kate Humble, and are frequent guests on programmes such as Springwatch and Countryfile. Lloyd and Rose’s family of birds can also be seen in various documentaries, films, dramas, commercials and photography projects. From Tilly the Golden Eagle to Poppy the pigeon, it’s unusual to find Lloyd and Rose without one of their feathered family under their arms. Their passion for birds runs deep and the pair have been acknowledged as world experts at tracking and in-flight filming. Our Life with Birds is illustrated with Lloyd and Rose’s own film

Classic farce – just don’t get caught! By Josh Cox JOHN Smith is an ordinary taxi driver - ordinary, that is, except for the fact he has two wives, two homes and a very tight schedule. In this glorious comic romp of a sequel to Run For Your Wife, John and long-suffering lodger Stanley Gardner are desperate to keep John’s children, half-brother Gavin and half-sister Vicki, apart after they’ve met on the internet. Confusion and panic befall John while wives Mary and Barbara remain oblivious of the other – until they all come face-to-face. The comedy comes thick and fast, and the pace is at break neck speed; the set has the necessary doors to enter and slam, mistaken identities and double entendres – all essential ingredients to pull off a successful farce. The show will star John Lyons from A Touch of Frost, The Nineteenth Hole and United!, alongside a cast of six including John Goodrum, Susan Earnshaw, Susie Hawthorne, George
Telfer, Charlotte Chinn and Chris Sheridan. Rumpus Theatre the company behind this production, are renowned for their lively yet professional approach and being excellent value-for-money. Since forming in 1994, they have continually sought to combine high audience appeal shows with adventure, establishing themselves as a high standards production company with a proven track record. Ray Cooney has written more than 25 comic screenplays, with a good portion of them having runs in London’s West End. Run For Your Wife spent many years on the West End, with Caught in the Net being dubbed equally, if not more hilarious. Tickets for Caught in the Net at The Haymarket from February 28 to March 3 are priced at Wednesday and Thursday £22, Friday and Saturday £24, with all 2pm performances being £19. For more information or for tickets, call the Anvil Arts box office on 01256 844244, or visit the website anvilarts.org.uk.

Keeping you motoring for over 30 years Subaru Levorg 1.6i SE GT Lineartronic
Boxer really helps Levorg to pack a punch By Tony Yates
So yes, this is a large vehicle, but it’s certainly no slouch. This week’s review puts me in the So, in the real world, does the Boxer driving seat of the Subaru Levorg. But, engine design work? Well, for me it straight away, I know what you are all does. It sounds great, gets a move on thinking ‘what is a Subaru Levorg’? with minimal fuss and has plenty of low Well, I’m glad you asked that question down grunt. Yes, It’s not as refi ned as because the Levorg is a car that you some, but then again I don’t want it to don’t see very often on the UK roads, be refi ned, I want to feel that characand until my test drive this week, I teristic Boxer engine thumping away didn’t know much about it either. What ahead of me as I head for the hills. I will say though is that the Levorg really is the wolf in sheep’s clothing.
Power & efficiency The Levorg was equipped with a 1600cc Boxer - horizontally opposed DOHC 16V direct injection turbo petrol engine - a unit that provides a maximum power output of 170 PS @4,800 – 5,600rpm and a torque figure of 250Nm @1,800 – 4,800rpm. On the combined cycle I achieved 36mpg which is not outstanding, but still good for a car that I consider to be a big vehicle. If you are interested, the Levorg will also reach a top speed of around130mph and 0-62mph of 8.9s.
Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency
Vehicle Dynamics Control, Hill Start Assist, Active Torque Vectoring, plus some of the most comfortable seats I have ever sat in. You also get an auto-dimming rearview mirror, power windows, welcome lighting, Bluetooth, dual USB ports, reversing camera and a voice recognition system. Of course, as usual, I have only just scratched the surface on what the Levorg has to offer.
On the road
The Levorg feels great on any road surface and that’s thanks to its predictable handling and smooth ride. Remember the Levorg also has some decent off-road capabilities and is in itself an effortless car to drive thanks mainly to the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive layout which includes an active torque split system which helps further increase the off-road credentials of the Levorg. Then, there are the brakes, which feel very good thanks to 316mm ventilated discs at the front and 300mm at the rear. I kid you not, hit the pedal
To sum up
like you mean it, and the Levorg will come to a controlled stop in no time at all. So, no issues there then.
Design & technology Some of the standard equipment on the Levorg comes in the form of Automatic LED headlights, 18”
The Levorg is a decent car with plenty to offer. It’s like a dependable dog; it will be everything you ever wanted it to be and then some. Although, there are areas where I aluminium alloy wheels, automatic feel the interior could feel a touch air conditioning system, 7” multifunc- more special. But saying that, it’s tion colour touchscreen, EyeSight, still very functional and the drive is 4.3” LCD multi-information display, very rewarding thanks mainly to that adaptive cruise control, ABS with unmistakable Boxer sound. I’m going Electronic Brake-force Distribution, to give the Levorg four stars in this test front, side, curtain & knee airbags, because it truly is a machine that will Thatcham Cat 1 alarm Immobi- always deliver. Bison fight it out to stay at top By George Welch IN-FORM Basingstoke Bison needed two goals in the final five minutes against London Raiders to clock up their seventh straight league win. Doug Sheppard’s side also beat Bracknell Bees 5-2 at the weekend as ‘Stoke, with games running out, clung on to their position at the top of the table. But they extended their rich vein of form the hard way as they had to come from behind against the Raiders on Sunday. The fi rst two sessions of the contest saw no goals as home goalie Michael Gray and Herd’s Dean Skinns stopped everything that went their way. The match was snapped open on 42 minutes when London’s man of the match Brandon Ayliffe picked up a stray pass just inside the blue line, and ripped a wrister past Skinns. Bison piled on the pressure in search of an equaliser and were back on terms when skipper Aaron Connolly forced the puck home on 56 minutes. Then, with just 62 seconds remaining, Ryan Sutton scored to extend Basingstoke’s winning run and keep them at the top of the tree. The dramatic win followed the 5-2

win over Bracknell, which was not as straight forward as the scoreline suggests. Bracknell shocked their sleepwalking hosts with two early goals, Joshua Martin and Frantisek Bakrik hitting the back of the net for the buzzing Bees on four and 12 minutes respectively. Sutton pulled one back two minutes later but out-of-sorts ‘Stoke were
unable to make further ground in a goalless middle period. Instead, the home side turned it around in a devastating opening three minutes to the fi nal session. Sutton (40:28 minutes), Tomas Karpov (40:57) and Roman Malinik (42:15) fi red the Hampshire side into a 4-2 lead within the blink of an eye. Grant Rounding secured the points in the 59th minute.
Closest rivals Peterborough Phantoms and Swindon Wildcats both won their weekend games. Bison remain top of the table with a game in hand but level on points with the Phantoms. They have five games remaining and face a challenging game at home to third-placed Wildcats on Saturday. ‘Stoke travel to mid-table Bracknell Bees the following day.
Goals galore move Row nearer to promotion spots TOP class Hartley Wintney moved to within three points of the EvoStik South East automatic promotion places after making light work of both their home games this week. The in-form side overpowered bottom club Arlesey Town on Saturday with a 4-1 win before cruising to a 3-0 victory over Marlow on Tuesday. The Row have won seven of their
last eight games, lifting the men in orange to third place – three points behind Beaconsfield Town. A fi rst half Jake Baxter goal and second half strikes from Rowan Vine and Adam Everiss did the business on Tuesday against Marlow. It was also goals galore against Arlesey on Saturday, although the league’s second top goal scorers had
to come from behind in the second half. In a second period sprinkled with goals it was, surprisingly, the visitors to strike fi rst, Billy Lannon scoring at the back post on 56 minutes. Hartley were quick to respond and, just three minutes later, substitute Paul Hodges levelled the tie with a 20-yarder.
The home side secured the points in a ruthless 13-minute spell. Hodges grabbed his and Hartley’s second (71 minutes) before Everiss (81) and Jack French (84) added the extras. Hartley, six points off leaders AFC Rushden & Diamonds travel to Chalfont St Peter (6th) on Saturday before hosting Thame United (11th) on Tuesday.
Northeast hopes move will help to fulfil England dream HAMPSHIRE Cricket secured the signing of the sought-after righthander Sam Northeast on a long-term deal on Monday. The contract commits the former Kent captain to the club until at least the end of 2021. Northeast, 28, has totalled more than 8,000 fi rst-class runs at an average of 39.66 in 136 matches since his debut in 2007. The Ashford-born player has
reached the 1,000-run landmark in each of the last three County Championship campaigns. He said: “I have had a really enjoyable 10 years at Kent and I would like to wish the club and its supporters the best of luck for the future. “It was an honour to be the club captain for three years and I leave the club with many happy memories. “At the same time, I am hugely excited about joining Hampshire.
“It is a club and a team with a very bright future, and I am really looking forward to making as big a contribution as possible towards the club’s success. “I hope this move will also help me push on to fulfi l my dream of playing for England.” Giles White, director of cricket, said Sam is an “exciting addition” to the Ageas Bowl side and “will add quality to the batting line up”.

FOOTBALL: Tadley Calleva’s promotion bid took a hit on Saturday when they only scraped a point from their visit to second-bottom Verwood Town. Jaco Castillo-McPherson scored an early goal for the hosts but a Paul Coventry equaliser sent the teams in level at half time. George Turner put the Dorset side ahead again on 64 minutes and it took a late goal from Aaron Parfitt deep into injury time to steal a point for Tadley. The high-flyers lost further ground on Tuesday when they lost 1-0 at fellow promotion chasers Andover New Street. Meanwhile, Whitchurch United put a stop to their five-match losing streak with a 0-0 draw at bottom club Folland Sports. United (15th) are without a game until they host Downton on February 28. Tadley (5th) entertain AFC Stoneham (3rd) on Saturday before welcoming Folland Sports (18th) to Barlows Park on Tuesday.
First win in ten ICE HOCKEY: Basingstoke Buffalo won their first game in more than three months as they swept aside bottom club Lee Valley Lions. Sunday’s 5-2 home win – their fi rst in 10 games – was secured with five different goal scorers. Sam Dollin, Warren Jones, Blair Dubyk, Gregory Martyn and Mark Austen were all on target for the Buffs. ‘Stoke also grabbed a point in the overtime loss at Invicta Mustangs the previous day. They lost on penalties following a 2-2 draw.
Another defeat RUGBY: Sorry Basingstoke RFC lost their 17th straight league game with a 40-14 defeat at mid-table Old Tiffinians on Saturday. ‘Stoke remain rooted to the basement of the London 3 South West division but, luckily, they have this weekend off. Meanwhile, in the Hampshire 1 division, top of the table United Services, Portsmouth were too strong for Overton as they eased past the Hampshire side in a 46–15 hammering. Tadley (BBO Premier) and Chineham (Hampshire 2) were without fi xtures.

Inside: Hartley Wintney move closer to the top | Northeast move fuels England dream | Bison stay at top after tough win
Town given a finishing lesson ahead of victory in midweek By Owen Hughes BASINGSTOKE Town saw their undefeated run come to an abrupt end with a 3-0 defeat at Redditch United on Saturday before getting back on track with a 2-1 win over Stratford in midweek. Sam Smart opened the scoring against Stratford minutes before half-time. Sam Argent drilled the ball into the box where Smart was waiting to volley brilliantly past Louis Connor. Seven minutes into the second half the scores were levelled as Michael Taylor blasted home from close range, but Ben Wright rescued the tie on 79 minutes with a 25-yard free kick. Basingstoke move up to 13th in the Evo-Stik South Premier on 45 points, one place above Saturday’s hosts, Redditch. The Dragons were left ruing poor fi nishing and a missed penalty by the time the referee blew his whistle in the Midlands. Callum Bunting had the earliest opportunity to put the visitors ahead before Smart put Argent’s rebounded shot wide of the post. Redditch ‘keeper Ethan Ross proved an impenetrable wall in the home goal. Lewis Wright brought down Smart in the box just before half time but
Ross dived down to his left to push Argent’s penalty out for a corner. Things went from bad to worse for Basingstoke as the hosts went on a counter attack from the corner and Stuart Fleetwood’s looping shot from distance beat goalkeeper Colm McAdden. A minute after the restart it was 2-0 when Adam Page doubled the score line with a shot past the onrushing McAdden. It was the home side’s turn from the spot on 77 minutes with Ashley Sammons’ penalty making sure of all three points. Basingstoke manager Terry Brown said: “Sometimes, you just think football does kick you in the privates many times, but they more or less trod all over us today. “We have never won on an AstroTurf pitch, but heaven knows why that is, because we played some lovely football. “We had probably 20 chances but the fi nal ball and fi nishing wasn’t good enough. “Their man of the match in a 3-0 home win was the goalkeeper, so I think that tells you how the game went. “But credit to Redditch, they give us a lesson in fi nishing.” Basingstoke welcome 12th placed Hitchin to the Camrose for Saturday’s 3pm kick off.

Smashed-up Ivan Antonov could be forgiven for seeing stars after being levelled by this bone-shattering blow against London Raiders on Sunday. Basingstoke Bison continue to do most
of the bullying in the South 1 division though as weekend wins over Bracknell Bees and Raiders extended their winning league run to seven matches. Yet the Herd had a headache or two
of their own as they clawed their way back from 2-0 down against the Bees before staging a stunning late comeback at the Raiders the next day. See inside for a full report on the wins.
