The masterplan showing the design for the new-look Oxpens area
By Samantha McGregor THE search is on for a developer to bring to life plans for a major regeneration project in Oxford city centre. Joint agents Bidwells and JLL want to redevelop the former Oxpens College land and transform the onemillion square foot site into homes, offices, a 155-bedroom hotel, shops, leisure facilities and a new public square and open space.
The site is sandwiched between the Westgate shopping centre, the River Thames and Oxford rail station. The Oxpens scheme is a joint venture between Oxford City Council and Nuffield College, under the company Oxford West End Developments Ltd (OXWED). The land has been acquired from London and Continental Railways and Oxford City Council, paving the way for development to start. It is expected a developer will be appointed in the spring
and soon after would be in a position to submit a planning application. Oxford City Council leader Bob Price said: “The Oxpens development is the next important phase of regeneration for the city’s West End and will deliver 500 desperately needed homes, 200 of which at least will be council rented social homes and another 50 will be affordable intermediate homes.”
