Parents bidding to raise £100,000 to improve park By Eva Astreinidou PARENTS are working tirelessly to raise £100,000 to help bring a ‘desperately needed’ new play area to Witney. The Madley Park Residents’ Association (MPRA) has fought to help raise the funds, appearing on a radio show and launching a JustGiving page, as well as planning a second hand clothes sale and a fitness boot camp in the process.
Now, the group is through to the next round of a community fund for its project Activate:Madley and is asking for support and votes by November 21 to help bring a major revamp project to life. It hopes the money will be in hand before work on the play areas can begin next year. Tina Hepworth, a mum and Witney resident, said: “We have so many children and young people on Madley Park and in the wider community across Witney who would benefit from
new play equipment. “We need votes to be in with a chance of winning and the whole community getting behind us on this would help.” The project, which will feature two new play areas, one for under 12s and one for older children, is estimated to cost around £116,000. In addition to £23,408 that has already been raised, the group has applied for West Ooxfordshire District Council (WODC) grants and hopes to receive good news in mid November.
Plans to renovate the park were approved in June by WODC, after a three-year consultation with families, young people and neighbouring communities. Cllr Jeanette Baker, cabinet member for leisure and communities at WODC said: “Young people and families on Madley Park have, for some time, wanted more exciting and challenging play equipment for older children, so they can continue to enjoy activities outdoors and spend time with their friends.

“We believe this is important and are pleased to be part of a communityled project team that is working hard to achieve this.” The project group Activate:Madley Park was formed in 2011 and was a collaborative project between the MPRA, Witney Town Council, Sovereign Housing Association, WODC and the Woodstock Road Residents’ Association.
