Campaigners’ celebrate as village quarry is rejected By Eva Astreinidou CHEERS broke out as plans to build a huge quarry near a small village were thrown out after a three-year campaign by the community. Anti-quarry group Bachport celebrated the decision to reject plans for the sand and gravel quarry near Clifton Hampden, calling it a ‘famous victory’. Oxfordshire County Council planning committee threw out plans for Fullamoor Quarry, which was set to be the size of 165 football pitches, on the grounds of environmental damage, increased pollution and congestion. The news came as a huge relief to campaigners who had feared the worst on Friday after the council’s highways team reversed their view on lorry movements. After the meeting Bachport chairman Ian Mason said: “This was a famous victory. [The quarry] would cause environmental damage to a tranquil area, create more traffic and pollution on an already busy main highway and neighbouring roads and threaten a proposed new link road and river crossing from Didcot to the Culham Science Centre. This road is vital for future jobs and homes in the wider area.”

Bachport spokesperson Giles Baxter said: “This is an excellent outcome. It is reflective of the hard work, perseverance and strength of community support that has gone into the campaign.” But he said the ‘fight may not be over yet’ adding that Hills Quarry Products, who submitted the plans, still have the right to appeal. A spokesperson for Hills Quarry Products said: “[We are] extremely disappointed by the planning committee’s decision to refuse planning permission for Fullamoor Quarry. “Our application was robust and had addressed all relevant concerns raised by consultees. “We consider Fullamoor’s construction materials to be essential for local development and will now take time to consider our situation and the way forward.” The week before, campaigners were angered after the council’s highways planning team made a U-turn following developers’ suggestions that a ban on lorry movements could be introduced during key times of the day. The 11th-hour reversal was a blow to anti-quarry supporters and came just one week after OCC and its highways authority recommended that the plans be refused on the grounds of safety, congestion and pollution.
