Firefighters tackle blaze at scrap metal yard as flames light up sky
Village engulfed in smoke By George Welch PLUMES of smoke billowed across a village as a large fire ripped through a scrap metal yard in west Oxfordshire. Six engines from Oxfordshire, Warwickshire and Gloucestershire fought the large blaze which engulfed cars, metal and tyres at the yard in Great Rollright, near Chipping Norton.
The flames spread through the scrap piles at Aldridge Scrap Metal, Halt Farm, at around 6pm on Thursday last week and fi refighters prevented it from spreading to a nearby building containing cylinders. Crews used water carriers and three jets but, the size of the fi re meant they also had to use a nearby stream to help extinguish the blaze.
Large plumes of smoke spread through Great Rollright village and fi refighters, liaising with Public Health England, told residents to stay indoors and close the windows, although there was no immediate cause for concern. Thames Valley Police closed the road to allow access for the fi re service. Crews were at the scene over-
night and the following day to ensure the fi re was fully extinguished. No one was injured. Group manager Paul Bremble said: “Crews were faced with a large welldeveloped fi re on arrival that was rapidly spreading to adjacent buildings and other areas of the scrap metal yard. “Acting quickly the crews estab-
lished water on the fi re and stopped the fi re from spreading to a building containing cylinders and a large quantity of tyres. “Their quick actions contained the fi re and ensured that it could be brought under control quickly. “We will continue to work with the owners to determine the cause of the fi re.”
