St Giles Fair wows the crowds
Council will decide on City Deal at a meeting next week By Adam Flinn adam@taylornewspapers.co.uk

A key decision that could lead to up to 30,000 extra jobs being created in Oxfordshire over the next 10 years is expected to be made by the county council next Tuesday. The council’s cabinet are considering an economic growth plan, known as ‘City Deal’ status, with the fi nalised bid due to be submitted to the government in October. It is a unified effort by all of Oxfordshire’s councils, the two universities, Local Enterprise Partnership and the major science centres at Harwell and Culham to compete for devolved powers in exchange for delivering local growth. The City Deal will hand over more control of government spending to these organisations, if they can show that the money would be used to speed up economic growth and increase private sector investment.

County council leader Ian Hudspeth said: “Oxfordshire has the greatest potential of any location in the UK to deliver world-leading technology and business innovation building upon our academic and research heritage. “The process of developing the City Deal has already strengthened relationships locally and all the partners are speaking with one clear and simple message – that Oxfordshire has a thriving and successful future. “The City Deal partners have been working closely to make Oxfordshire’s ambition of being a world leader in the ‘knowledge economy’ become reality.” Oxfordshire’s City Deal bid focuses on ‘economic growth through innovation’, with the aim of ensuring that the workforce is able to take up jobs in the future. This will involve local control over skills training in the county to make sure young people are prepared for future employment. Nigel Tipple, chief executive • Continued on Page 2
