• Judith, pictured with her grandmother Gracie, needs a specialist tricycle to aid her development
www.oxfordjournal.co.uk
AN APPEAL to raise money to help a disabled Oxford girl get the vital equipment she needs to keep active has been launched. Ten-year-old Judith Stickings, from Headington, suffered severe birth asphyxia which led to cerebral palsy and visual impairment. She is now awaiting delivery of a therapy tricycle that will enable her to move with greater freedom and exercise as she develops, and her family are working with charity Caudwell Children to raise the money. “Judith’s condition is as a result of her basically dying at birth and being resuscitated,” said mother Gillian. “She had massive oxygen deprivation that damaged her brain, and was in a special care baby unit for the fi rst two weeks of her life.” Over the last year, Judith has taken part in bike accessibility days, which helps disabled children try out different types of bicycles and trikes that suit their needs. Gillian said: “She’d gotten very interested in PC Plum from Balamory, and then suddenly this spring she said ‘I want a bicycle so I can be like PC Plum!’ “The sort of bike she would need was way out of our price

range, but we applied to Caudwell and they gave us a grant.” “It will help her development, and apart from the exercise and physiotherapy aspects, she can re-enact in her brain that she’s being a policeman and all this sort of thing. It should have huge benefits. “Judith’s one of those people that if she was in a wheelchair and wanted to climb Everest, she’s got that stubborn personality that would get her there. “Once she’s decided she really wants to do something, if you try and make it happen, you’ll really get the best results. “The thing worrying for me is how many hours everyday I’m going to be expected to have to go out with her, as I’m not going to get anything else done!” Caudwell Children have a set a target just short of £2,000 they would like to raise to help fund the tricycle, having raised half of that so far. Trudi Beswick, CEO of Caudwell Children, said: “Specialist therapy tricycles are a vital piece of equipment for children as they enable a greater level of freedom and independence. • Continued on Page 2

OXFORD Pride communications manager Terry Talbot has spoken out about homophobic assaults in the city, after she was attacked during the festival’s main event on Saturday. While at Oxford Pride, Terry, who is disabled, was punched on the spine by a drunken man, who was then removed from the site by security. It comes after an assault was reported to police about a homophobic incident last Tuesday, when a man was pushed, punched and kicked by two men on Cornmarket Street. Terry then spoke of a third attack that took place about a month ago in Oxford, when two men violently beat up another man because he was gay. “It’s probably linked to the gay marriage debate,â€? said Terry. “I never heard of people being assaulted last year - why was I not punched last Pride?â€? “I wouldn’t want to put the community in fear, but compared to last year, I ďŹ nd it more than coincidental there were three attacks during the marriage debate. “We object to abuse in any form, and I hope Oxford does not ever become like Canada in the 90s, which I lived through. “I feel safe in Oxford, but then again I don’t want to take it for granted either, because I was assaulted in daylight with 3,000 people there.â€? A police spokesperson said only one homophobic incident had been reported during Oxford Pride, and so far no arrests have been made. The website www.stophateuk.org provides support for people who have been assaulted or abused as a result of their sexuality, disability or race, which Terry was keen to point out. She continued: “The incidents are a rarity in Oxford, and in Canada I’ve seen it to the extreme in the past, and it was deadly. “Despite what’s happened, nowhere here have I ever seen or heard of anybody being gay-bashed in Oxford before now.â€? • More pictures and full report of festival on page 8
Dorothy Gardner, aged 81 “It was recommended to me by a friend that has connections with Clockwise. “I have been here for three years now and I thoroughly enjoy it. “It lifts my spirits and I have met some lovely people and the music really lifts you and encourages you to carry on for the rest of the day.

Vicki Galvin, GO Active Coordinator at Oxford City Council said: “We wanted to celebrate UK Older People’s Day and we have marked it in the past but we wanted to up the anti and we loved the idea of the Big Skills Share. “We wanted to make it a one stop shop for over 50s to highlight what a great part of the community they are. “We are keen to get more physical activities for over 50s so it is an opportunity for us to fi nd out what they can do because the older you get the more important it is to stay physically active. “It is really important that we keep this generation healthy because they are really important to our community. “It is the fi rst time we have done it in the city and we are just testing the water this year. There seems to be a need for it and we will look to do it on a more local level. People could try planting with the Botanical Gardens and jewellery-making with Age UK, while for those who wanted be active, there was dancing, seated exercise and table tennis.

Firefighters kept on their toes with two fires in the city on Monday OXFORDSHIRE Fire and Rescue Service were called out to two separate incidents in the city on Monday, with one in Jack Straw’s Lane and the other in Green Road. The fi rst incident, in Green Road, took place at 9.43am where fi refighters were confronted with a kitchen fi re and
a large amount of smoke coming from a ground-floor flat. It was as a result of a plastic high chair being left on an electric hob that had been accidentally turned on. Firefighter Dan Smith said: “On arrival we were glad to see that everyone who lived at the property had evacuated but
worryingly there were no smoke alarms. “It was fortunate the occupier was awake and alert at the time of the fi re, and was able to turn the cooker off and get herself and her children out of the property. The second fi re on Jack Straw’s Lane at 5.09pm started when
cooking was left unattended on a hob, which caught fi re and spread to nearby cupboards. Two adults were treated for slight smoke inhalation by paramedics at the scene. Fire crews will be returning to both areas in the near future to offer safety advice to neighbours.

PM announces £400m cancer funding boost
By Adam Flinn adam@taylornewspapers.co.uk
TWO brothers who ran an organised crime gang across Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire have been ordered to pay back £221,000 of their ill-gotten gains. Jason Dean, 46, from Ash Grove in Headington and Nicholas Dean, 48, from Roman Way in Bicester, were sentenced to four and a half and eight and a half years in prison respectively back in March 2012. Following their conviction, Thames Valley Police’s Economic Crime Unit began investigating the Deans’ fi nancial background. And last week at Reading Crown Court, it was determined the pair had benefited from their criminality to the sum of £400,000 between them, equating to £200,000 each. Jason was required to pay a confiscation order for the full amount of his share within 28 days, or he will serve a default of two and a half years and still be required to pay the money. Nicholas was ordered to pay
• Nicholas Dean (left) and Jason Dean (Pictures courtesy of Thames Valley Police) £21,000 within six months, although the police have the right to apply to the court and force him to sell any future assets until the figure is fully paid. Det Supt David Poole, who led the investigation, said: “The Dean brothers ran an organised criminal empire supplying
drugs and laundering money, and thought they were untouchable by law enforcement. “As well as depriving them of their freedom, we wanted to ensure they were not rewarded by the proceeds of criminality. “These confiscation orders for £221,000 means the Deans
will have to repay a considerable amount of money or face further prison terms and still have to repay it. “Criminals need to be aware that we will continue to bring asset recovery proceedings against them to strip them of their ill-gotten gains, no matter
how long it takes or how well they try to hide their tracks.” In March 2012, Nicholas admitted to conspiracy to supply class A and B controlled drugs. Jason pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply class A controlled drugs, as well as money laundering.
Scientists make strides solving ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ protein problem OXFORD University scientists have revealed their findings on a ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ protein, which could help in the development of new cancer drugs. The E2F protein was found to sometimes boost tumour cell growth and at other times suppress it, and researchers have now been able to explain its dual nature. Professor Nick La Thangue of the Department of Oncology at Oxford University, said: “We are excited by this new discovery, which provides a new and very important approach to develop-

PRIME Minister and Witney MP David Cameron met with families and staff at Oxford Children’s Hospital on Saturday, as part of a visit to announce a further £400m for cancer drugs in England. He was joined by his wife Samantha, and were introduced to staff and families on Kamran’s Ward as well as meeting with former patients and representatives from cancer charities. Mr Cameron revealed a £400m extension to the Cancer Drugs Fund while on the visit, which more than 34,000 patients have benefited from since it was created in 2010. He said: “When I became Prime Minister three years ago, many patients with rare cancers were being denied lifesaving treatments, “That is why we created the Cancer Drugs Fund, and it is why we are extending it.” The fund gives patients fast access to cancer drugs that are not routinely available on the NHS, but what their doctors believe is right for them. It was introduced after concerns were raised that too many newer cancer drugs were being denied to NHS patients. But Saturday’s announcement now means the fund is confi rmed for an extra two years until March 2016.

OXFORD held a special “open day” celebration yesterday to mark the renaissance of Wednesday’s Charter Market. Lord Mayor Cllr Dee Sinclair launched the market by cutting the ribbon at Gloucester Green at 11am. Oxford City Council has granted a five-year license for the market to Geraud UK and LSD Promotions, who will be responsible for the day-to-day management of all the markets held in Gloucester Green. Cllr Sinclair said: “The Gloucester Green markets always have something different and unusual for people to buy and they are an essential part of Oxford’s diverse retail offer. “The open day showcased what the market can offer with the new operators and how they can attract more customers.” Under the new arrangements, Gloucester Green’s existing markets will continue with a fresh look, additional promotion and investment to stalls, along with an upgraded management system to attract new traders. Geraud and LSD will work with the council and stakeholders to improve the markets by increasing stallholders and developing the site further in the future.

Road safety - the dangers of distraction OXFORD schools are being invited to design banners promoting road safety, with messages focusing on avoiding distractions such as using a phone or eating behind the wheel. The competition is linked to Road Safety Week, which is running from November 18 to 24, and will see the winner’s banner printed for display outside their school. It is being run by school uniform specialist Recognition Express and national road safety charity Brake, who will provide a safety pack to every participating school. Joe Burns, corporate fundraiser at Brake, said: “Road Safety Week is a community event, so we are always thrilled when local businesses take part. “It’s a great way to get children thinking about how to keep themselves safe near roads. We encourage schools to take part and use the opportunity to plan lessons and activities surrounding Road Safety Week.” Recognition Express Oxford-

POST-GRADUATE students have started to move into Oxford University’s controversial Castle Mill flats, angering local countryside and rural community campaigners. The Castle Mill development, on the edge of Port Meadow, has been approved by Oxford City Council but fi nal planning conditions regarding contamination have yet to be resolved. Helen Marshall, director of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) in Oxfordshire, is “appalled” at the news, calling it “premature and inappropriate”. “The planning permission granted to the University expressly says the buildings should not be occupied until a number of planning conditions are met,” Ms Marshall said. “Only a couple of weeks ago, the council deferred a decision about this because of the need to evaluate the environmental impact of aspects of the development. “If Oxford University were at all serious about seeking to resolve the disastrous impact of these buildings, it would have deferred student occupation.” A spokesperson from the city council said: “The Council has

written to the university advising that the occupation of the accommodation is at the University’s risk, as the council, as the local planning authority, has not discharged the outstanding planning conditions. “The council is advised that it should not give consideration to enforcement action until it has received the University’s voluntary Environmental Impact Assessment. “This will enable the council to consider whether to approve compliance with the outstanding planning conditions. “The council understands the University intends submitting its voluntary Environmental Impact Assessment in December.” The university insists they are acting “reasonably and responsibly in using the accommodation for its intended purpose”. Pete Wilton, spokesman for the university, said: “We have addressed all contamination issues and carried out all necessary remedial work, to the satisfaction of the city and environmental authorities.”

License now needed by scrap dealers SCRAP metal dealers in Oxford and nationwide are now required to have a license to trade, as part of a new act that came into force on Tuesday. The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 means that all dealers, motor salvage operators and vehicle dismantlers must apply for a license by October 15, or face prosecution and a fi ne of up to £1,000. Under the act, all dealers are also required to keep a record of all scrap metal they receive, process or dispatch for three years, listing a description of the metal, its value and details of the seller and buyer. Detective Inspector Ian Wood, South East regional coordinator for metal theft, said: “These new requirements will protect the legitimate dealers, the majority who trade honestly and in accordance with the law. “It will allow us to target those who don’t, reducing metal theft across the Force. “Thames Valley Police has already had great successes in reducing metal theft, and saw a 47 per cent reduction Forcewide in this type of crime in 2012/13 compared to 2011/12. “We are not complacent however, and will continue to target those who steal or trade in stolen metal.”

INTERACTIVITY via social media has become a necessity in today’s climate and it seems as though Oxford’s universities are pretty good at using it. Student advice and information website Unipod collated a league table based on how universities use social media as part of their recruitment, marketing and branding strategy and what effect it was having. Oxford University topped the rankings while Oxford Brookes were fi fth. Oxford has over 1.1million Facebook likes compared to Cambridge’s half a million while it also has 23 per cent more followers on Twitter. Cambridge has more subscribers on YouTube but Oxford University have had unrivalled success on iTunes with over 20million downloads in the last four years. A spokesperson for Oxford University said: “We are very pleased to be ranked at the top of the social media league table. It is particularly pleasing that we now have more Facebook followers than all other Russell Group universities combined. “Social media is increasingly an important channel for our

external communications and we will continue to develop our use of social media to engage with the broader public as well as our current students.” Oxford Brookes also performed well with over 73,000 likes on Facebook, just under 13,000 Twitter followers and 1,043 subscribers on YouTube. Brookes claim their position in Unipod’s rankings shows the university’s “commitment to engagement with current and prospective students, as well as the general public”, something staff recognise as a hugely successful part of the student experience and external relations. Social and digital media manager at Brookes, Tim Gibson, said: “We put a lot of effort into supporting our social networks to develop meaningful relationships. “This latest ranking reflects Oxford Brookes’ on-going commitment to providing outstanding support to our students and our desire to develop meaningful relationships beyond their time with us.”

MORE than 70,000 people in Oxford are still at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, because they don’t have an alarm in their home. The new research, conducted by the ‘Carbon Monoxide – Be Alarmed!’ campaign, also discovered there was widespread confusion over the alarms. Around 31 per cent of people questioned without a carbon monoxide alarm said this was because they already had a smoke alarm, not realising this doesn’t detect the poisonous gas. Figures gathered by the campaign, as well as information discovered during fi re service visits to homes, suggest that the number of households with the appropriate alarm could be as low as one in 10. Dr Rob Hicks, supporting the campaign, said: “At high levels, carbon monoxide can kill you in minutes. At lower levels, it can cause a range of serious longterm health problems. “The symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are very hard to recognise, even for doctors, as they are similar to many common illnesses like flu. “This makes it very easy to miss the warning signs, with

life-threatening consequences. “Most people wouldn’t dream of not having a smoke alarm, and it should be the same with carbon monoxide alarms.” Catherine McFerran and Katrina Davidson, whose 18-yearold sons Neil and Aaron died due to poisoning in 2010 while on holiday in Northern Ireland, have been campaigning to make the alarms compulsory. They said: “Since our sons were cruelly taken from us by this silent killer, we have campaigned to try to prevent similar tragedies. “Carbon monoxide alarms are now compulsory for all new homes in Northern Ireland and when new appliances are installed in Scotland, but many people in the rest of the UK may still be at risk. “Make sure you and your loved ones are protected. It is not a risk worth taking.” The Department of Health estimates at least 40 people are killed and 4,000 others are treated in hospital for carbon monoxide poisoning every year.

AGATHA Christie’s classic novel The Mousetrap, which has also become the world’s longest running stage production, comes to the Oxford New Theatre on Tuesday. The production had never previously left the West End, but to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the fi rst performance it is travelling around the country. It fi rst opened at The Ambassadors Theatre in 1952, and the slightly belated celebration is made up of 60 productions taking place worldwide. Karl Howman, who has previously appeared in the BBC sitcom Brush Strokes, plays Mr Paravavincini, a foreign visitor at a guest house in the show. He said: “I’m playing a foreigner who turns up out of the blue because his car’s broken down in the snow, but is anybody what they seem? “That’s really what the Christie genre is about. They’re at this guesthouse, and then the murder happens and of course he’s one of the suspects. “The play had never left the

Andris Nelsons conductor Brahms St Anthony Variations (Variations on a theme of Haydn) Brahms Symphony No 3, Brahms Symphony No 1 Tonight’s concert offers two mainstays of the German romantic repertoire, Brahms Symphonies 1 and 3. No 1 finds Brahms at his most radiantly inspired and upbeat, whilst No 3 is a symphony of swirling emotions in which every movement ends quietly (audiences at the time were taken completely by surprise). Alongside these major works is the ‘St Anthony’ Variations, often regarded as Brahms first truly symphonic work. house, high-mounted tail lights and raised ride height are hallmark design elements ensuring the new model is instantly recognisable as a Soul. Based on a new platform shared with the latest Kia cee’d, the new Soul boasts a stronger bodyshell, and suspension upgrades, is expected to give the new car improved driving dynamics, ride quality and refi nement.
REVIEW: KIA SOUL
By Philip Shoulder @writeonmotoring
The latest versions of Kia’s 1.6-litre GDi petrol and CRDi diesel engines will be offered, as well as six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions. The cabin is significantly quieter, with higher quality materials throughout, and greater sound proofi ng compared to the outgoing Soul. And the cabin accommodation has improved, with increased leg and headroom. The tailgate opening is now 60 mm wider, providing easier access to a larger cargo area, which has increased capacity to 354 litres (plus additional underfloor storage) with the rear seats upright. The New Soul will be available, depending on fi nal market specifications, with a choice between single and two-tone
interiors, with black, brown and grey leather and fabrics available. Depending on model, standard equipment should include: front LED lights and rear LED ‘halo’ lights; xenon headlights; keyless entry and push-button engine start; automatic climate control air-conditioning; cruise control; leather seat trim; ventilated front seats; heated front and rear seats; panoramic glass sunroof; and heated exterior mirrors. Safety and convenience features such as High Beam Assist, Parallel Parking Assist System and a Lane Departure Warning System, will also be available. The new Soul will carry over the outgoing model’s reputation for customisation. Buyers will be able to choose between up to 11 exterior paint fi nishes, as well as three different roof colours – black, white and red. Eight different alloy wheel designs – ranging from 16-inch to 18-inch in size – will be available. The all-new 2014 Kia Soul will go on sale across Europe next year. Full model line-up, specifications and prices are yet to be confi rmed.

WILDER PRAISES U’S ‘BIG RESULT’ Boss delighted as injury-ravaged Oxford bounce back from first loss CHRIS Wilder praised his Oxford United players after they bounced back from their first defeat of the season to beat Hartlepool United 3-1. United had their unbeaten record broken by league leaders Chesterfield just under a fortnight ago, but Wilder’s men reacted positively to extend their impressive run on the road. With Andy Whing and Dave Kitson both suspended, Wilder brought Asa Hall into the middle of midfield and loanee Ryan Williams made his fi rst league start of the campaign. And within five minutes, United were ahead as Michael Raynes’ clever turn on the edge of the box caught three Hartlepool players on their heels and Williams slotted into the bottom corner for his fi rst goal for the club.

The home side drew level just after half-time through Luke James and began to stamp their authority on the game. But Deane Smalley’s cool fi nish all but ended Hartlepool’s challenge before Asa Hall converted a last-minute penalty. Wilder told the club: “It was a tough game. “People were looking, after our fi rst defeat of the season, how we would react. “Losing Kitson and Whing made the task even more difficult but the players showed a fantastic reaction and it is a big result and performance for us.”
Hartlepool United Oxford United Moving in the right direction
HEAD coach Justin Burnell believes London Welsh are moving in the right direction after a 40-9 win over Plymouth Albion. The Exiles have now recorded back-to-back bonus point wins and Burnell was delighted with the second half performance which saw Welsh score 24 points to no reply. “Fourteen points, three games in – I’d have ripped anyone’s hand off,” said Burnell. “I felt there were less errors than there had been in the two previous weeks. “If it’s going in the right direction then hopefully by the end of the season, when it’s the business end, we’ve got it all right.”

He added: “I thought we got a bit sloppy after the fi rst goal and we possibly could have taken the game away from the opposition. “We knew that just after half time they would come back fighting and show a reaction and we were architects of our own downfall in that period, giving away too many free-kicks. “They punished us for one of them and that gave them the impetus and the momentum but we stemmed the tide and got a goal on the counter attack and it was good to see Asa wrap it up.” United moved back up to second in League Two as a result and closed the gap to Chesterfield to four points after the Spireites had their unbeaten record ended by local rivals Mansfield Town. Wilder’s men face Southend United at home this Saturday with Kitson available after serving a one-match ban. James Constable is also in contention after the striker played 20 minutes • Ryan Williams opened his account for Oxford United last Saturday (Picture by Steve Daniels) against Hartlepool.
Cook late show eases City worries as they secure first victory JAMIE Cook’s late header earned Oxford City their first win of the season as they beat Maidenhead United 1-0 to advance to the third qualifying round of the FA Cup. City’s prize is a trip to Skrill South leaders Eastleigh on October 12 while Mike Ford’s men will now look to build upon their fi rst win of the campaign. In a relatively even encounter against Maidenhead, Lee Henderson came closest for City as he saw his header hit the post. Ford’s men began to press
and were rewarded in the 86th minute as Cook headed home Steve Basham’s dangerous cross. After last weekend’s victory, City will now be looking to earn their fi rst league win of the season, as they welcome Stalybridge Celtic to Court Place Farm on Saturday.
