See page 14

VOLUNTEERS and organisations in Wantage and Grove are rallying round to make sure peorall ple get a bit of extra food and help this Christmas. For the third year running, Fo Wantage and Grove Foodbank Wa is d doing its annual drive, appealing for people to donate food for Christmas hampers, which will be delivered to people who are fi nding life difficult this festive season. However, this year, there is more support than ever. Wantage charity champion Ray Collins has lent his support to the Neighbourhood Christmas Hampers campaign, and other organisations have become involved in their own way. Ray and members of the foodbank have met with the Wantage and Grove neighbourhood policing team as part of the campaign. November is all about preparations, with the campaign collecting donations and names for people who will receive the hampers, which will be distributed around the area throughout

December. Wantage and Grove Foodbank was set up three years ago, and is mostly overseen by church staff in the area. Helen Margetts, who runs the foodbank, said: “We started the foodbank, and just thought it would be nice to give people some special Christmas parcels – some people haven’t got much money and Christmas stuff is quite expensive. “We don’t always see the people directly – some of the parcels are sent to children’s centres and advice centres – but everyone we do see is always really pleased with it.” She estimated 60 hampers were delivered last year, but Ray has hopes of trebling that figure. “I put the word out on Facebook, and one lady dropped six bags of shopping the next morning, so we’re already off to a fantastic start,” he said. “I think we’ll get more than enough stuff to give some really nice hampers away at Christmas.” • Continued on page 3
