WHEELCHAIR WISECRACKS Didcot author suffering from mobility condition takes a humourous look at her experiences on a day-to-day basis A DIDCOT author who has written three books about her experiences with a condition that left her in a wheelchair will be holding a signing session in the town later this month. Hannah Ensor suffers with Hypermobility syndrome (HMS), and has put together three cartoon books to give a humourous approach to what she has to go through on a daily basis. HMS is a connective tissue disorder, and means that Hannah’s joints stretch further than normal. Using stick-men characters, Hannah’s books are fi lled with handy hints and one-liners, and have won praise from medical professionals, patients, and their friends and families. “I started experiencing how uncomfortable people could be around disability and how diffi-

cult it was to explain things about it,” Hannah said. “Either people did not realise what you mean, or people took it really seriously and got scared by it. “So I started drawing cartoons as a way of showing it how it is, in such a way that people aren’t scared by it or put off by it.” Her three books in the series are: ‘You know you have been in hospital too much when…’, ‘You know you have Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome when…’, and ‘You know you have Hypermobility syndrome

or Ehlers Danios Syndrome when…’. Hannah added: “I use the book whenever anyone asks what’s w wrong with me, I hand them the w b book and within minutes they’re laughing and saying ‘oh my word, la that’s normal for you!’ th “I’ve even had the case where ssomeone had read the book, and five minutes later I had partially d dislocated my wrist, and needed th them to help me put it back in. “That’s a scary thing to ask someone to do, but because they’d read the book, they’d had a laugh about that page already. “It really facilitated me getting what I wanted, and them not fi nding it scary because they knew that’s what happens. Yes it’s unpleasant, but it’s ok.” Hannah will be at the Didcot branch of WHSmith on November 28 from 6pm to 9pm, at the same time the town’s street fair is taking place.
