LET’S GET EVEN MORE PRESENTS THIS YEAR! Girl’s appeal for festive spirit A TEENAGER from Didcot is appealing for your donations to help make Christmas special for people who will be away from their loved ones during the festive season. Fifteen-year-old Courtney Hughes, who attends Didcot Girls School, is relaunching her Charity Secret Santa for a second year after the success she experienced 12 months ago. Last year Courtney collected 250 gifts which she distributed to Helen & Douglas House, Life Charity, Hanover Elderly Home and the Children’s Hospital at the John Radcliffe. She started the charity after her late great-grandmother spent last Christmas in hospital.

She died in March this year. Courtney explained: “She absolutely loved Christmas. She was in hospital over Christmas and she didn’t like it. I thought it was a bit unfair and I should give Christmas to people like her. “It gives me a really big bag of joy that people, off their own backs, do something for children. It shows people do care that everyone needs a Christmas.” Courtney, who won this year’s Oxfordshire Young Volunteer of the Year award, has Myalgic Encephalopathy (ME) and says the charity work does take up a lot of her time. “There is a lot of organising, emailing, phone calls and meetings,” she said. “All my friends at school think
it is really crazy what I am doing and say they wouldn’t have the guts to do it because they wouldn’t know where to start. A lot of them say: ‘How do you start all that?’ and ‘What are you doing?’ “A few of them have donated and supported me and helped by putting posters up around school. “Hopefully we’ll get a couple more presents than we did last year but I have changed the charities and hopefully it goes well again.” This year Courtney is collecting gifts for Helen & Douglas House, Life Charity, SSNAP (Support for the sick newborn and their parents) and Elderly Homes. All non perishable gifts are welcome and can be dropped off at K and K News in Brasenose Road or you can email charitysecretsanta@live.co.uk.
