TOWN TO GO DICKENSIAN Wantage set for an evening of Victorian entertainment Clean sweep for King Alfred’s Academy!
KING Alfred’s Academy hosted the local round of this year’s annual Rotary “Youth Speaks” competition against Faringdon Community College. The event, which has been going for 30 years, is designed to promote the
art of public speaking and encourage presentation skills among young people. The Academy fielded five teams, securing a clean sweep in both ‘Intermediate’ (11 – 13) and ‘Senior’ (14 – 17) categories.
The event, which has been running for over 30 years, was organised and hosted by the Faringdon and Wantage Rotary Clubs. The winning groups will compete next in the district fi nals in February.
PREPARATIONS are fully underway for Wantage’s traditional Dickensian Evening next week. Over 3,000 people are expected to pack the town next Friday for an evening of fun, laughter and festive entertainment. The evening will be opened by the Mayor of Wantage, Councillor Fiona Roper, at 6pm. The extravaganza, which sees the town lit up for the fi rst time every Christmas, is traditionally held on the fi rst Friday of December each year. And people are encouraged to embrace the Victorian spirit and come to the celebrations in their best fancy dress. Wantage Chamber of Commerce president Gurmukh Randhawa believes the night will be typically festive and special. “It brings a big gathering of people from in and around the town,” he said. “The most important thing about the evening is the amount of

Wantage Silver band are expected to treat the town to some Christmas carols. And Father Christmas will also fly in on his sleigh to pass on the best festive wishes. There are also refreshments in the October Club, Library and Parish Church, and there is free parking in Vale car parks the following day.
